Sugar production during April 1997 stood at 15.43 lakh tonnes recording a decline of 5.89 lakh tonnes from 21.32 lakh tonnes during the same month last year.
According to a joint communique issued by the National Federation of Co-operative Sugar Factories Ltd (NFCSFL) and Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), the total output during the 1996-97 season also declined by 15.29 points at 122.88 lakh tonnes from the previous year's total output of 139.17 lakh tonnes.
Sugar despatches from factories during April stood at 10.95 lakh tonnes for internal consumption and 0.15 lakh tonnes for exports as against 9.40 lakh tonnes for internal consumption and 1.09 lakh tonnes for exports during the same month last season.
The total offtake till April during the 1996-97 season was 80.99 lakh tonnes for internal consumption and 3.20 lakh tonnes for export.
