IBM India has rolled out a series of initiatives in an effort to increase its presence in the UNIX marketplace. The company is betting heavily on its Power5 based servers which, it claims, delivers increased speeds of running applications with a relatively fewer number of processors, compared to Sun and HP servers.

According to IBM, its eServer p5 systems with its Power5 processors represent a new era in UNIX computing and have features such as IBM Virtualisation Engine which enables a microprocesser to be split virtually so that optimum use is derived.

A spokesperson for IBM said: "We are establishing new economics for the server industry and delivering value for our clients. The Power5 processors' performance combined with the scalability makes it an ideal platform for enterprises to run their applications."
