Nine things to know about iOS9

The most exciting feature of the new iOS is its multitasking and the split window feature

Debarghya Sanyal New Delhi
Apple’s much awaited iOS 9 has finally been dropped on earth, even though it will take some time to reach Indian homes.

But that shouldn’t stop you from flaunting your knowledge about it. Here are nine important things to know about the new iOS.

1. Multitasking

Arguably the most exciting feature of the new iOS is its multitasking and the split window feature. One can easily swipe or pull down an additional app on to the screen such that it will share half the screen space with the primary app. So, now you can chart a route on map even as you are browsing for hotels, or preparing itineraries on notes.

Combine this with iPad’s ‘slide over’ feature, which lets you open apps without leaving the one you’re in, and the user’s time per task ratio comes down drastically

2. Search and Proactive

Search will be smarter, incorporating context-sensitive tools, such that your current time and location impact your results by surfacing the most relevant info first.

Proactive, which is a lot like Google Now, takes this a step further. It will now suggest apps, contacts, and media based on your location, time of day and activity. It can queue up music for your commute, suggest relevant people to add to an e-mail thread, or alert you that you need to leave on a particular time for your flight.

3. More space

iOS 9 will require less storage for wireless updates, with free space requirements going down from 4.6 to 1.3 GB.

4. Security tweaks

Your data and usage stats won't be tied to your Apple ID or other Apple services. iOS 9 will also feature six-digit passcodes and two-factor authentication to keep your data secure.

5. News

A much more attractive and functional News app replaces the newsstand. Daily news stories, in a layouts optimised for iOS, would be delivered based on your interests in a curated, easily navigable format.

6. Siri

The other major update comes with Siri. With a new Proactive, and smarter search, Siri can now sift through your photos and deliver particular images based on time and location. She will send in contacts and apps suggestion based on your contextual questions. Simple hands free conversions and calculations are on the new menu.

7. Maps

Map will finally be providing transit info, along with step-by-step transit-enabled directions. This is a much awaited update, since Apple split with Google and developed its own map app.

8. Notes

The Notes app has had some major updates this time. You can now add links, maps, and photos directly into Notes, use your finger to make drawings as well as add a checklist for an instant to-do list.

9. Wallet

Finally, Passbook gets evolves into Wallet. Even as it still stores cards and boarding passes, it can now also hold loyalty and rewards cards, as well as Discover and store cards. In addition, Apple Pay is teaming up with Square to develop new contactless card readers that will enable independent merchants to accept Apple Pay in their stores.

Additionally, there is new scrubber for iOS 9, which makes image browsing faster and easier. And many more minute tweaks here and there, for sure. Oh but you will have to wait for its India release isn’t it? Too bad. Happy waiting, though!
