The software exports from the Chandigarh capital region (comprising Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali) touched Rs 1565.33 crore in 2010-11, registering a growth of about 31 per cent over the previous financial year. The total exports from region in 2009-10 was to the tune of Rs 1196.58 crore.
Out of the total exports in 2010-11, exports amounting to Rs 852.33 crore was registered by units that are registered with the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), while the units in the SEZ recorded the figure as Rs 713 crore. This year, more than 10 new software companies registered with the STPI commenced operation from the region.
Infosys Ltd, Dell Internation Services (P) Ltd, IDS Infotech Ltd, Nvish Solutions (P) Ltd and Emerson Design Engineering Centre are the top five companies that performed well in terms of exports.
The region has attracted many new startups. Also, the number of IT/ITES units increased from 145 in 2002-03 to 242 in 2010-11. Further, STPI had earlier stated that the growth in this region had been fuelled largely by the growth of small and medium enterprises.
“In 2010-11,” STPI joint director and centre head (Mohali) Ajay P Sirvastava said that not less than 10 new small and medium IT enterprises registered with its started operation. They included IBM Daksh Business Process Services Ltd, Dot Technologies, Credentia Business Process (P) Ltd, Ovirtue INC, Communox Collasist (P) Ltd, he told Business Standard.

The units are registered with STPI and occupy the top three positions in terms of exports in 2010-11: Infosys Technologies Ltd (from Chandigarh), Dell International Services (I) Pvt Ltd (from Punjab) and IDS Infotech Ltd.
Overall, in 2009-10, the software exports from Chandigarh region was to the tune of Rs 1196.58 crore (including exports from SEZ). Whereas in 2008-09, the software exports from STPI units was to the tune of Rs 731.85 crore and exports from SEZ was Rs 318.08 crore.
Also, in order to facilitate the IT companies registered with it, STPI is setting up a new office in Mohali (Punjab) with an investment of Rs 40 crore. Spread over 1 lakh square feet, the office will have centres for data and incubation along with an administrative office. The proposed facility, spread over 60,000 square feet, is likely to be completed in two years.
