Uttar Pradesh, which was earlier among the top 2 IT exporters in India, is slowly getting back to its groove.
While things are slowly taking place for setting up of an IT Special Economic Zone in Lucknow spread over 25 acres, the export data of the Union commerce ministry has shown that the state has posted a growth of over 73 per cent in software exports.
In its latest report, Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics, Kolkata has revealed that software exports from UP touched Rs 13,000 crore during 2008-09 compared to Rs 7,500 crore in 2007-08.
The corresponding figures for 2006-07 and 2005-06 stood at Rs 7,000 crore and Rs 6,500 crore respectively. At present, UP is the 6th largest IT exporter. India’s largest IT firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has a sizeable global delivery centre in Lucknow.
The state government claims the high growth rate in software export was the result of pro-industry steps and facilities provided to the exporters.
On consolidated basis, a total of Rs 34,818 crore worth of exports were registered in 2008-09, which was 102 per cent growth over the previous year. The exports relate to textiles, leather, steel and metal items, animal husbandry, glassware, footwear, machinery, equipment, software and chemicals.
The government has provided several sops to exporters, including tax waivers in export consignments and raw material used for production.
