Hundreds of angry and frustrated asylum-seekers broke through police lines near Hungary's southern border with Serbia and began marching north toward Budapest, while Britain and France pledged to take in tens of thousands more refugees to try to ease the crisis.

A Muslim flight attendant for ExpressJet says she was wrongly suspended from her job last month because she refused to serve alcohol to passengers, citing her religious beliefs.
	Charee Stanley, a Detroit-based flight attendant for ExpressJet, filed a discrimination complaint today with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
	The airline had agreed to give Stanley a religious accommodation, saying she could work out an arrangement with the other flight attendant on duty so they could serve alcohol instead.
	She was suspended only after a colleague complained, said Lena Masri, an attorney with the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
	Stanley, 40, has worked for the Atlanta-based airline for nearly three years and during that time converted to Islam, Masri said.
	Stanley approached a supervisor in June after learning that her faith forbids not just consuming alcohol but also serving it.

	Cuomo identified his wounded staffer as Carey Gabay, a first deputy general counsel at the Empire State Development Corporation.
	Gabay was walking with his brother near the Brooklyn parade route at 3:40 a.M. When he was caught in the crossfire between two gangs, according to police officials.
	A bullet struck Gabay, 43, in the head. Cuomo said Gabay, a Harvard-educated lawyer who had worked as an assistant counsel to the governor, and his wife are expecting their first child.

	Obama was met with resounding applause at a major union rally and breakfast in Boston when he said he had signed the executive order aboard Air Force One as he flew in to mark the US holiday of Labor Day. He said Republicans who claim the mantle of middle-class protectors are talking big, but they "have to walk the walk."

A Toronto businessman who had been running for Parliament with Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper's party made the wrong kind of splash and has been dropped by his party after being caught on video urinating in a coffee cup.
	The tinkling tale of Jerry Bance, who had been filmed while working as an appliance repairman, and the Conservatives' ousting of another candidate today caps a bad week for Harper. The prime minister now faces re-election as Canada has entered a recession.
	Bance was recorded by the Canadian Broadcast Corp.'s hidden cameras in 2012 as he was peeing into a cup and pouring it down the sink while on a service call. The homeowner was in the next room. Bance runs an appliance repair company, and the CBC was reporting on home repair companies.
	A Conservative party spokesman said today "Mr. Bance is no longer a candidate." He had been running in a Toronto district in the Oct 19 election.

Italy top court: Amanda Knox conviction based on poor case

Qatar has deployed ground forces in Yemen for the first time, dispatching 1,000 troops to battle Shiite rebels in an oil-rich central province where both sides are gearing up for what could prove a decisive battle, Yemeni officials said today.
	The deployment, which was also reported by the Qatar-based and funded Al-Jazeera news network, marks a major escalation by the Saudi-led coalition that has been bombing the rebels from the air since March, and which includes Qatar.
	The conflict pits the rebels, known as Houthis, against an array of forces, including supporters of Saudi-backed President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, southern separatists, Islamic militants, and local and tribal militias.
	The conflict has splintered the military, with units loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh siding with the Houthis.
	Over 2,100 civilians have been killed in the fighting, according to the United Nations.

Qatar deploys 1,000 ground troops to fight Yemen's rebels

A US military spokesman today denied reports by local officials that a NATO airstrike killed 11 police and counter-narcotics agents in southern Afghanistan.
	"There were no strikes conducted by US or NATO forces in Helmand Province on 6 September," Col Brian Tribus said in a statement.
	He said US forces had conducted "kinetic strikes" in the Maiwand District of Kandahar Province on Sunday "to eliminate threats to the force."
	An Afghan official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to release information, had earlier said that a NATO airstrike in Helmand on Sunday killed the 11 during an operation to arrest drug smugglers.
	He said four other counter-narcotics officers were wounded in the strike, which took place late Sunday outside Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital.
	Nabi Jan Mullahkhail, Helmand provincial police chief, confirmed the airstrike but did not say who carried it out or give any other details.

Germany's foreign intelligence agency BND has collected evidence of mustard gas use by the Islamic State group.
	German daily Bild reported today that BND intelligence agents collected blood samples from Kurds who were injured in clashes with IS.
	It quoted BND chief Gerhard Schindler as saying that the agency has "information that IS used mustard gas in northern Iraq."
	Schindler told the paper that the mustard gas either came from old Iraqi stockpiles produced under Saddam Hussein's rule or was manufactured by IS after it seized the University of Mosul.
	A senior German intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss the matter publicly, confirmed the comments attributed to Schindler.
	He declined to confirm that the BND collected blood samples or discuss the agency's methods.

The mother of a Palestinian toddler killed in a West Bank firebomb attack was buried in her village today hours after succumbing to wounds sustained in the attack, which also killed the child's father and is believed to have been carried out by Jewish extremists.
	Thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral for Riham Dawabsheh, 27, and later about 100 threw rocks at Israeli soldiers nearby who responded with rubber bullets, the military said.
	On July 31, assailants hurled firebombs into a bedroom of the family's home in the West Bank village of Duma in a pre-dawn attack, and sprayed graffiti on the walls depicting a Jewish star of David and the word "revenge."
	Eighteen-month-old Ali Dawabsheh perished in the flames. The boy's mother, Riham, ran out of the house and a neighbor said he covered her in a sheet to try to extinguish the flames.
	She died in an Israeli hospital early Monday following a recent deterioration in her health. Her 32-year-old husband Saad died of burn wounds .

Palestinians mourn mother of toddler killed in arson attack

The Supreme Court in Bangladesh has lifted a ban on the screening of a movie about a garment worker who was rescued from the rubble 17 days after a five-story factory building collapsed more than two years ago, killing more than 1,000 people.
	In response to an appeal by the movie's producer, a four-member panel of judges led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha decided late yesterday to stay a previous High Court order that banned the release of the movie for six months.
	Producer Shamima Akhter argued in the appeal that the movie should be released as the country's Film Censor Board had earlier approved the screening of the film after cutting some scenes following previous court directives.
	The film's director, Nazrul Islam Khan, has argued that the real-life story of Reshma Begum depicts courage amid the tragedy.

Two officials say the Palestine Liberation Organisation decided at the last minute to delay internal leadership elections, which had been due next week, in a sign of growing disarray.
	Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had called for the vote by the PLO parliament, and the postponement was a blow to his leadership.
	The decision was made today by the PLO Executive Committee.
	Participants Ahmed Majdalani and Saleh Rafaat say the panel felt time for preparations was insufficient. They say the committee didn't set a new date, but decided the PLO parliament, or Palestinian National Council, should meet before the end of the year.
	The parliament was to have chosen new PLO leaders and to have considered a more confrontational policy toward Israel, after years of impasse in negotiations on Palestinian statehood.

French President Francois Hollande says he's confident the country's long-stagnant economy has turned a corner and will post stronger growth in 2016, the last full-year of his term.
	Hollande has made bringing down the country's stubbornly high unemployment rate a condition for his possible re-election bid in 2017.
	Speaking at a news conference today, Hollande said "Growth is back. Not sufficiently, but we will definitely have a bit more than 1 per cent growth this year." In 2016, economic growth will be 1.5 per cent, Hollande said.
	France achieved zero economic growth in the second quarter, after expanding only 0.2 per cent in all of 2014.
	EU statistics for July showed French unemployment rose to 10.4 per cent, from 10.3 per cent in June.

Turkey's military says 16 soldiers were killed in a Kurdish rebel attack against troops in southeast Turkey.
	A military statement today said six other soldiers were wounded in the attack yesterday in the mainly Kurdish Hakkari province, which border Iraq and Iran.
	Rebels of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, detonated explosives killing soldiers who were traveling in a convoy.
	The attack prompted the military to launch air operations against dozens of PKK targets.
	Earlier, Firat News, a website close to the rebels, claimed that 32 soldiers were killed in the ambush.
	The renewed fighting between the PKK and the security forces has killed about 200 people since July, including around 85 soldiers and police officers. The fighting has derailed a 2 1/2-year-old peace process with the Kurds.

Spanish police say a 19-year-old woman has been arrested after an investigation found evidence she was recruiting combatants to fight for the Islamic State group and helping them plan their travel to Syria or Iraq.
	An Interior Ministry statement today says the woman was arrested in the northeastern city of Figueres near Spain's border with France.
	She was not identified and the statement did not say when she was arrested.
	The statement says authorities started investigating the woman after combing through material seized from Ayoub Moutchou, a suspected Moroccan recruiter for the Islamic State.
	Authorities say Moutchou fled Spain in July and was arrested in August in Stuttgart, Germany. Germany handed him over to Spanish authorities last week.

Spain arrests woman, 19, accused of recruiting for IS group

Activists say members of the Islamic State group have captured an oil field in central Syria.
	The activists say the extremists captured the Jazal oil field late yesterday after intense clashes with government forces in the area in the central province of Homs.
	Syria-based activist Bebars al-Talawy said via Skype that IS fighters first attacked army posts around the Jazal field then stormed it.
	Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said today that all the engineers working in the field moved to the nearby government-controlled Shaer gas field.
	He said government troops withdrew from the field but now overlook parts of it.
	IS fighters control much of Syria's oil fields that are mostly in the eastern regions bordering Iraq.

Iran's foreign minister criticized demands for the resignation of Syrian President Bashar Assad today, saying such calls have prolonged the Arab country's civil war.
	Mohammad Javad Zarif went so far as to say that those who have in the past years demanded Assad's ouster "are responsible for the bloodshed in Syria."
	The top Iranian diplomat did not name any specific country in the region but was likely referring to Turkey's and Saudi Arabia's repeated calls for Assad to step down. The two Sunni Muslim countries have supported rebels fighting against Assad.
	Also today, French President Francois Hollande, in announcing that France will send reconnaissance flights over Syria beginning tomorrow and is considering airstrikes in the fight against the Islamic State group, said that resolving Syria's war will only happen if Assad leaves power.

Iran minister criticizes calls for ouster of Syria's Assad

The head of the UN atomic energy agency says satellite imagery of North Korea's main nuclear site indicates that the country is expanding its atomic programme.
	Yukiya Amano spoke today at the opening of a 35-nation board meeting of his International Atomic Energy Agency.
	Most of the focus at the meeting will be on Iran. But the agency is also trying to keep tabs on North Korea, where it has had no presence since the country told its inspectors to leave after withdrawing from the Nuclear Nonproliferation treaty 12 years ago.
	Since then Pyongyang has test-exploded three nuclear weapons.
	Amano says construction at the Yongbyon site observed through satellite photos appears to be consistent with North Korea's statements "that it is further developing its nuclear capabilities.

UN: NKorea continues developing its nuclear capabilities

A retired French secret service agent has apologised for planting the bombs which sank a Greenpeace ship 30 years ago, killing a photographer and causing an international incident that tarnished the image of France.
	Jean-Luc Kister told Television New Zealand yesterday that he and his colleagues never meant to kill anybody when they attached two bombs to the Rainbow Warrior on July 10, 1985, while the boat was moored in Auckland.
	The boat was to travel to French Polynesia to protest French nuclear testing. The bombing killed 35-year-old Portuguese-born photographer Fernando Pereira, who drowned.
	Kister said their intention was only to sink the boat, and the death has plagued his conscience ever since. He described the operation as a "big, big failure."
	"We were not cold-blooded killers," Kister said. "We did everything to preserve life of the people on board of the Rainbow Warrior."
	He said he was surprised when he first got the orders to bomb the Greenpeace boat, an organization

Australia's prime minister said today that his country will resettle a "significant" number of refugees from Syria this year, while the opposition called for an additional 10,000 refugee places to help the world cope with a humanitarian crisis.
	Tony Abbott told Parliament he would have more to say about numbers on Tuesday after Immigration Minister Peter Dutton reports back from meetings with the United Nation refugee agency and the International Organisation for Migration in Geneva and Paris about the refugee crisis from Syria.
	"It is the government's firm intention to take a significant number of people from Syria this year," Abbott said.
	"The women and children in camps, in particular the women and children from persecuted minorities in camps, they deserve a compassionate response from Australia and that is exactly what they will get from this government," he said.
	The opposition Labor Party called for an additional 10,000 refugee places on top of the 13,750 already planned for 

Australia vows to resettle 'significant' number Syrians

A Malaysian official says the death toll from a wooden boat that capsized last week with Indonesian migrant workers off the country's western coast has risen to 61.
	Another 20 Indonesians have been rescued.
	Maritime official Mohamad Hambali Yaakup says rescuers have retrieved the bodies of 37 men, 23 women and that of a young girl.
	The boat was believed to have been taking migrant workers home to Tanjung Balai in Indonesia's Sumatra province when it sank Thursday in bad sea conditions, not far from the coast of Sabak Bernam town in central Selangor state.
	Hambali said today that the search operation will continue. Such incidents are common in Malaysia, which has up to 2 million Indonesian migrants working illegally.
