Yemeni security officials close to pro-government forces fighting Yemeni rebels say a Saudi-led coalition is bombing rebel positions near the Bab el-Mandeb strait to weaken them in preparation for a ground offensive there.
	Security officials close to the rebels, known as Houthis, said today that 13 of their fighters were killed in the airstrikes. The airstrikes took place in areas Houthis control around the strategic Red Sea strait, including the port town of Mocha, which is connected by road to Taiz, Yemen's third-largest city.
	Yemen's conflict pits the Iran-allied Houthis and troops loyal to the former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, against an array of forces including southern separatists, local and tribal militias, Sunni Islamic militants as well as troops loyal to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi.

Insurgents shelled the central prison near the Syrian capital Damascus today as well as residential neighborhoods in the city, killing at least 11 and wounding more than 40.
	The Interior Ministry statement, carried by state TV, said the shelling of the prison area killed 10 and wounded 40.
	It did not say if the dead and wounded included prisoners from the jail known as Adra Prison, just northeast of Damascus. The statement did not say which specific insurgent group was responsible for the attack.
	Later today, insurgents fired shells into residential neighborhoods in Damascus killing one person and wounding seven, according to state TV.
	Insurgents have shelled Damascus on several occasions in recent weeks, killing and wounding dozens of people.
	Today's shelling of Adra Prison and nearby areas came a day after government airstrikes on a Damascus suburb killed more than 20 people and wounded dozens in the latest wave of government attacks on the crowded rebel-held area.

At least 23 Iraqi soldiers and government-allied militiamen were killed today in an attack by Islamic State militants in the turbulent Anbar province west of Baghdad, Iraqi military and police officials said.
	The officials said today's attack, which killed 17 soldiers and six Sunni militia fighters, took place in the rural district of Jaramshah, north of Anbar's provincial capital, Ramadi.
	The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media.
	They said the IS fighters used suicide bombings and mortar shells and that chief of army operations in Anbar, Maj-Gen Qassim al-Dulaimi, was lightly wounded.
	News of today's attack came two days after up to 50 soldiers were killed by the IS in two ambushes elsewhere in Anbar province, much of which is under IS control.

Egyptian police have arrested three individuals under a new anti-terrorism law who are accused of spreading Islamic State propaganda through Facebook.
	The police directorate in the southern Sohag province said today the three had two laptops containing IS videos.
	President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi approved a draconian law last week that sets a wide-ranging definition of terrorism and prescribes harsh punishments.
	El-Sissi has waged a crackdown on Islamists and other opponents since 2013, when he led the military overthrow of the Islamist Mohammed Morsi, the country's first freely elected president, during mass protests against his rule.
	Following Morsi's ouster, a long-running insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula surged, with attacks targeting security forces there and on the mainland. The most powerful insurgent group pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group last year.

Philippine officials say a powerful typhoon has blown out of the northern Philippines, leaving at least 15 people dead and several others missing, including in a gold-mining village where more than 100 rescuers scramble to dig through a mudslide for possible survivors.
	Government forecasters said today that Typhoon Goni was last tracked at sea about 430 kilometres northeast of Basco town in Batanes province on the archipelago's northernmost tip.
	It had sustained winds of 140 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 170 kph. It was forecast to lash southern Japan within 24 hours.
	Most of the deaths were reported in Benguet province, where landslides killed 11 people, including at least three miners.

Italy's coast guard says it coordinated the rescue of some 4,400 migrants in a single day, a record-setting number, as smugglers took advantage of ideal sea conditions off Libya to launch a fleet of overcrowded, unseaworthy boats.
	The coast guard today said 22 rescue operations were carried out a day earlier for motorized rubber dinghies and fishing boats, all crammed with migrants desperate to reach Europe's southern shores.
	Italian coast guard, navy and border police boats pitched in, as did Norwegian and Irish naval vessels deployed in a European patrol-and-rescue force. Boats in distress use satellite phones to call coast guard rescuers or are spotted by patrolling Italian military aircraft.
	So far this year, some 110,000 migrants have been rescued off Libya and brought to southern Italian ports.

Tropical depression Kilo is expected to gradually strengthen and could pass Kauai as a hurricane next week, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.

	The hurricane centre says Kilo could regain strength, becoming a tropical storm by today night and a hurricane by Thursday. It is supposed to take a northward turn, and the timing of the turn will determine how much of a threat it is to Kauai and Oahu, according to forecasters.

At least 18 people have been killed in two separate bomb explosions in Somalia today, say Somali police officials.
	In the first attack 14 soldiers were killed when militants drove an explosives-laden vehicle into a training site for government soldiers in the southern port city of Kismayo, said Col. Mohamed Hassan, a senior Somali police officer in Kismayo.
	Somalia's Islamic extremist rebels al-Shabab claimed responsibility for that blast and said that 100 soldiers were killed, according the group's radio station Andulus.
	But police Col Hassan insisted that just 14 soldiers were killed and nine wounded. "Some of the wounded victims in hospitals have sustained serious wounds." he said.
