Bharti Fulmali’s brilliant innings of 61 runs went in vain as Mumbai Indians’ bowlers kept MI’s unbeaten run against Gujarat Giants and at Brabourne Stadium alive, as the inaugural champions won against Gujarat Giants by 9 runs on Monday. Mumbai are now well on their way to securing their place in the final directly by finishing at the top of the points table, while Gujarat Giants will now have to play the Eliminator first to book their place in the final.
Earlier, Gujarat Giants won the toss and invited Mumbai Indians to bat first. Mumbai lost their first wicket early as Amelia Kerr (5) got herself run out in the third over. Hayley Matthews (27) added quick runs before losing her wicket to Priya Mishra. Nat Sciver-Brunt (38) then added 59 runs for the third wicket before Ashleigh Gardner got her caught and bowled to halt MI’s momentum. However, Amanjot Kaur (27) kept the momentum going before losing her wicket to Kashvee Gautam. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (54) was next to depart, dismissed by Tanuja Kanwar. Yastika Bhatia (13) and Sanjeevan Sanjana (11 not out) added some quick runs at the end as MI finished their innings at 179 for 6 after 20 overs.
In reply, Gujarat Giants lost in-form Beth Mooney (7) early to Hayley Matthews. Her opening partner Kashvee Gautam (10) also failed to get going and was stumped off Sanskriti Gupta. Skipper Ashleigh Gardner (0) also made her way back to the pavilion quickly as MI reduced GG to 41 for 3.
Harleen Deol (24) played some brilliant shots but was trapped in front of the wicket by Amelia Kerr. Phoebe Litchfield (22) and Deandra Dottin (10) also failed to deliver and lost their wickets to Shabnim Ismail and Kerr.
Bharti Fulmali (61) kept the fight alive for GG but lost her wicket to Amelia Kerr while trying to keep up with the net run rate. Simran Shaikh (18) and Tanuja Kanwar (10) attempted some big shots towards the end, but the Giants eventually fell short of the target and finished their innings at 170 all out after 20 overs.
