Airlines to exercise moderation in pricing tickets as airfares spike: Govt

The government has asked airlines to exercise moderation and ensure a balance in pricing of air tickets amid a spike in airfares on certain routes especially after suspension of flights by crisis-hit Go First, according to a senior official. While making it clear that there are no plans to regulate airfares, the official said there should not be a huge gap between the tickets sold in the lower and upper fare buckets by the airlines. India is one of the fastest growing civil aviation markets in the world and domestic passenger traffic has been rising after being significantly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. After cash-strapped Go First stopped flying from May 3, there has been a significant rise in airfares on certain routes that were operated by the budget carrier. Akasa Air expands its training centre, can train over 700 professionals

Akasa Air has expanded its training and development centre, which can train more than 700 aviation professionals, including pilots, cabin crew, engineers and airport services and security personnel. As the less-than-a-year-old carrier, which has more than 2,500 staff, announced its expansion on Monday, Founder and CEO Vinay Dube said, "we are confident about our future and continue to invest in it. Nothing we do at Akasa is short term in nature". In recent days, the country's fast-growing civil aviation sector has witnessed turbulence with budget carrier Go First suspending flights since May 3 and later going into resolution proceedings under the insolvency law. Might move to NCLT against Go First if dues worth Rs 900 cr not paid: TAAI

Travel agents' grouping TAAI on Wednesday said it will consider moving the NCLT against Go First in case the airline does not provide a viable solution to clear its dues estimated to be worth around Rs 900 crore. The Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) has more than 2,500 members. On Wednesday, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) admitted the airline's plea seeking voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings. "We are waiting for announcements from the airline. In case, there is no viable solution with respect to clearing our dues, we will consider moving the NCLT," TAAI President Jyoti Mayal told PTI. The tribunal has suspended Go First's board and has appointed an interim resolution professional to manage the affairs of the airline. In a letter to Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday, TAAI said the travel agents need to be protected and laws regarding refunds need to be reconsidered. Go First Saga: Lessors seek to deregister 9 more planes of the airline

As Go First awaits the NCLT verdict on its voluntary insolvency resolution plea, lessors have sought deregistration of nine more aircraft of the crisis-hit airline. In one week, various lessors have approached aviation regulator DGCA for deregistration and repossession of a total of 45 planes of Go First. The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) is set to pronounce the order on the carrier's petition on Wednesday. Go First stopped flying from May 3 and aviation regulator DGCA on Monday directed the airline to stop sale of tickets till further orders. Lessors have sought deregistration of nine more planes of the airline, according to an update from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The airline had 55 aircraft in its fleet as on May 2 when it filed the petition and also announced suspension of operations.
