Discontentment over candidates' list bug within BJP ahead of J'khand polls

Discontent was brewing within the opposition BJP in Jharkhand with several of its leaders, including an incumbent legislator and three former MLAs, switching sides ahead of the assembly polls, expressing their disappointment over the candidates' list of the party. Among their grievances was the BJP "ignoring" its own rank and file, and giving nominations to leaders who came from other parties ahead of the elections. Polling for the 81-member assembly will be held on November 13 and November 20, and the votes will be counted on November 23. "We are pained. If you see the list, the party has reposed faith in those who joined the BJP from other parties, ignoring its own dedicated workers. Of the 66 candidates declared so far, more than half are those who came from other parties," a BJP leader said. The turncoats who got a BJP nomination were former CM Champai Soren, his son Babulal Soren, Lobin Hembrom, Ganga Narayan, Manju Devi, Geeta Kora, Sita Soren and Ramchandra Chandravanshi, am

Defeat to win: Stunning turnaround of Omar Abdullah's political fortunes

From facing defeat in the Lok Sabha polls in June to scripting history four months later as the first chief minister of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir after an emphatic victory in the assembly elections, it has been quite a ride for Omar Abdullah. Abdullah, 54, was sworn in as chief minister on Wednesday, marking the beginning of his second stint and the third generation of the influential Abdullah clan -- after his grandfather Sheikh Abdullah and father Farooq Abdullah -- in power. The National Conference (NC) vice president served as chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from 2009-14. In a decisive win in the recent assembly elections, the NC won 42 of the 90 seats that went to polls. It's pre-poll alliance partner Congress won six. Together, the two allies have a majority in the 95-member assembly -- five members are to be nominated by the lieutenant governor. Five Independents and the lone AAP MLA have also extended support to the NC-Congress ...

Change those who speak about 'changing' Constitution: Priyanka Gandhi

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday targeted the BJP government in Haryana, and said the people of the state should change those who speak about "changing" the Constitution and "insult" them at every level. In her first poll rally for the October 5 assembly polls, she said the people of Haryana have always protected the country. "Farmers, jawans and sportspersons kept the honour of the country," she said. "The BJP has been in government for the past 10 years in Haryana. What did they give you in return of protecting this honour? They (BJP government) insulted you at every level," she charged. "There is a lot of unemployment here. How many of you got employment," she asked the gathering. Attacking the BJP government over the issues faced by farmers, she said, "You held a protest against them and you got tear gas shells and you got 'lathis. You were not heard". Taking a dig at the BJP government's claim of giving MSP on 24 crops, she said out of those 24, 10 crops are n

Haryana polls: From kingmaker to king, Dushyant Chautala eyes bigger goal

JJP leader Dushyant Chautala, whose party is contesting the October 5 Haryana assembly polls jointly with Azad Samaj Party, predicts a hung assembly but exudes confidence that their alliance will win enough seats to emerge as a key player after the results. The JJP had won 10 of the 90 assembly seats in the 2019 Haryana assembly polls, the BJP 40 and the Congress 31. Chautala, 36, the great grandson of former deputy prime minister Devi Lal, predicts that no single party will be able to cross the 40-seat mark in the assembly elections. No single party can form government on its own. There are chances that nobody crosses the 40-seat mark. So, there will be parties with numbers and some Independents too who will win, former deputy chief minister Chautala told PTI. "Our alliance will win enough number of seats and emerge as a strong player in the scenario," he said. Asked whether they will support any other outfit in case of a hung assembly, Chautala quipped, "Why to go behind somebod

J-K youth becoming empowered under Modi government: PM in Srinagar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the youth of Jammu and Kashmir have found confidence in democracy again and are feeling that their vote can bring change, which is the first step towards their empowerment. Addressing an election rally in support of BJP candidates at the Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium here, Modi said the BJP will fulfil its promise of restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood. "The youth of my Jammu and Kashmir is no more helpless. He is becoming empowered under the Modi government. I am happy that the J-K BJP has also made huge announcements for the employment of youth. Be it their skill development or providing jobs without manipulation, the BJP will do all these," he said. Attacking the Congress, National Conference, and PDP, Modi said these three parties and families have "trampled" democracy and 'Kashmiryat' for their own benefits. "Do you remember what they did in the 1980s? They treated Jammu and Kashmir's politics as their own fiefdom. They did not w
