'Conversion of Airtel statutory liabilities into equity needs scrutiny'

Bharti Airtel's about Rs 41,000-crore of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues will not be converted into equity automatically as the telco's application for such conversion will go through a scrutiny at the Department of Telecom (DoT), an official source said on Friday. Bharti Airtel has sought conversion of its AGR dues of around Rs 41,000 crore, including interest liability, into equity in line with the relief given to debt-ridden Vodafone Idea by the government. "The application does not mean that it will be processed automatically. It needs to be evaluated and scrutinised before any final decision is made," the source said. An e-mail seeking comments from Bharti Airtel elicited no reply. The government has given relief to Vodafone Idea by converting its dues worth Rs 53,000 crore into equity ownership in the company. Airtel expands alert coverage to int'l calls, SMS to combat fraud calls

Bharti Airtel on Monday announced two new features in its ongoing offensive against spam, as it expanded detection coverage to international calls and SMSes and introduced spam alert display in ten Indian languages. Airtel said it expects to nullify the growing and alarming trend of spam calls originating and being funnelled through international networks into India by fraudsters amid a 12 per cent rise in such attempts in the last six months. "Following the launch of its AI-powered spam detection tool that flagged over 27.5 billion calls as spam to its customers, Airtel today announced the introduction of two significant enhancements aimed at staying ahead of spammers," the company said in a release. Customers will now receive spam alerts for calls and SMS messages in their preferred Indian languages. Bharti Airtel prepays additional Rs 5,985 crore of high-cost spectrum dues

Bharti Airtel and subsidiary Bharti Hexacom have prepaid an additional Rs 5,985 crore of high-cost spectrum liabilities to the government, the telco said on Wednesday. Airtel's subsidiary Network i2i has also voluntarily called and redeemed USD 1 billion in 'perpetual debt securities'. "Bharti Airtel and its subsidiary Bharti Hexacom have prepaid additional Rs 5,985 crore to the Department of Telecom thereby fully prepaying the high-cost interest liabilities of 8.65 per cent pertaining to the 2024 auctions," the Sunil Mittal-led company said. Network i2i Ltd has also voluntarily called and redeemed USD 1 billion in 'Perpetual Notes'. "Underscoring its commitment to financial prudence, operational efficiency, and its strong capital position, Airtel continues to prepay its high-cost spectrum liabilities, lowering its debt and cost of debt," it said. Airtel Payments Bank has surpassed one billion transactions on its platform in January 2025, reflecting a 47 per cent year-on-year growth in transaction volume across businesses, according to a top official. Anubrata Biswas, MD and CEO at Airtel Payments Bank told PTI that the "milestone" underscores increasing adoption of digital banking and payment solutions. It also highlights the diverse business model that the bank has built over the years. The bank caters to three key customer segments, urban digital, underbanked, and industries and institutions.
