IIFT organising two-day research conference on global trade, finance from Thursday

The commerce ministry's IIFT said it is organising a two-day research conference starting from Thursday to provide a platform for academic debate and knowledge sharing on issues related to international trade and finance. The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), a deemed-to-be-university, is under the administrative control of the ministry. The conference, to be inaugurated by Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu, will be attended by renowned academicians from across the globe, policymakers and economists from various multilateral agencies such as OECD, ILO, and UNESCAP. The participants will exchange views and knowledge in different domain of research in trade and finance. "The sixth research conference on Empirical Issues in International Trade and Finance will be organised at its New Delhi campus," IIFT said in a statement Wednesday. Alstom, Siemens offer Brussels merger concessions

French and German engineering giants Alstom and Siemens said Wednesday they had offered EU regulators concessions they believed would meet concerns over the planned merger of their railway businesses. The European Union, citing the possible impact on competition, launched an in-depth investigation earlier this year into the merger of the rail activities at Alstom, the state-controlled maker of France's iconic TGV trains, and Germany's Siemens. "The two sides believe that these remedies are appropriate and adequate," Alstom and Siemens said in a joint statement. There was no guarantee however that the remedies would be accepted by Brussels, they said, adding that they expected a response by February 19. The remedies could include asset sales, and technology or licence transfers, an Alstom spokesman told AFP. Sushma group buys land from Shipra group for Rs 250 cr

Punjab-based realty firm Sushma group has bought a 60-acre land at Zirakpur from NCR-based developer Shipra group for about Rs 250 crore to develop housing and commercial projects, a top company official said Wednesday. Sushma group has raised Rs 110 crore from IIFL to partly fund the land acquisition, its Executive Director Prateek Mittal said. "Shipra group has 260 acre of licensed land parcel to develop a township project. We have bought 60 acre from them for a consideration of about Rs 250 crore," he told PTI. While the company would construct housing project in 40 acre, the remaining 20 acre will be for 2 million sq ft of mixed-use development, he added. Sushma group would develop 900 independent villas and 1,000 apartments, Mittal said. In the mixed-use development, it would construct office space, retail and hotel, among others. Aluminium futures slide on weak demand, global cues

Aluminium prices declined by 0.39 per cent to Rs 139.40 per kg in futures trade Wednesday as speculators cut their bets amid weak trend overseas. At the Multi Commodity Exchange, aluminium for delivery in December fell by 0.55 paise, or 0.39 per cent, to Rs 139.40 per kg in a business turnover of 3,254 lots. Likewise, the metal for delivery in January next year was trading lower by 0.65 paise, or 0.46 per cent, to Rs 139.85 per kg in 1,216 lots. Analysts said trimming of positions by participants in line with weak trend overseas mainly attributed the slide in aluminium prices at futures trade. Globally, however, aluminium traded higher at USD 1,949.50 at London Metal Exchange.
