IT stocks decline up to 4.3% amid stronger rupee

IT stocks fell up to 4.3 per cent Thursday after a rebounding rupee dampened the investor sentiment. Shares of Hexaware Technologies dropped by 4.29 per cent, HCL Tech 3.73 per cent, Tech Mahindra 3.11 per cent, Mindtree 3 per cent, Infosys 2.90 per cent, Wipro 0.47 per cent and TCS 0.15 per cent on BSE. Led by losses in these stocks, the BSE IT index ended 1.78 per cent lower at 14,273.37. Shares of IT companies had surged up to 9 per cent Wednesday after the rupee breached the 74 level in intra-day trade. The domestic currency Thursday made a comeback and gained as much as 35 paise to trade at 73.60 against the dollar (intra-day) at the forex market. Big IT companies earn a major chunk of their revenues from their US clients and a weak rupee against the dollar positively impacts their profit margins.

BRICS nations sign declaration to accelerate cultural ties

The BRICS nations have signed a declaration to accelerate creative and sustainable cultural cooperation. The declaration, signed here on Wednesday, will see Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa cooperating in fashion, culture and animation. Calling for speedy implementation of the declaration, South African Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa said, "This declaration is a clear signal where we want to go and areas where we emphasise and practical steps we need to take. The declaration, which was signed by the BRICS ministers of culture, followed several months of consultations on importance and role of culture as one of the drivers of economic opportunities. The culture ministers also agreed to engage the New Development Bank, established two years ago by the BRICS partners, to fund cultural and creative industry programmes. South Asia needs to improve connectivity, cut non-tariff barriers to boost trade: Sahney

The South Asian region needs to improve transport connectivity, reduce non-tariff barriers and address logistics and regulatory roadblocks to promote trade and investment within the region, a trade expert said. Intra-regional trade in South Asia continues to linger between 5-6 per cent of the their total trade despite huge market opportunities for businesses, former president of SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vikramjit Singh Sahney said Thursday. He also outlined that the estimated average cost of trade within the region was 20 per cent which was higher than that with other regions. "Limited transport connectivity, growing non-tariff barriers, onerous logistics and regulatory impediments costs more to trade within South Asia than inter-regionally," he said here at the regional connectivity conference organised by think tank CUTS international.
