Gems and jewellery exports dip 22% in April

India's gems and jewellery exports have declined 22 per cent to USD 2.6 billion in April on account of demand slowdown in major markets including the UAE. Exports in April 2017 stood at USD 3.31 billion, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) of India said. Major export destinations for the sector include Hong Kong, the UAE and the US. The three countries account for over 80 per cent of the country's total exports of gems and jewellery. GJEPC vice chairman Colin Shah recently said the US is the largest consumer of diamonds and jewellery globally and the region is showing an upward trend. Gems and jewellery contribute nearly 7 per cent to the country's GDP and over 15 per cent to the merchandise exports. The drop in outbound shipments in April is mainly due to negative growth in the export of silver jewellery, gold medallions and coins along with a sharp rise in the return of consignments. Moody's downgrades PNB, cites negative impact of fraud

Moody's Investors Service has downgraded Punjab National Bank's rating citing impact of the recent USD 2 billion fraud on its capital as well as weak internal controls. The outlook to the rating has been however retained as stable, reflecting Moody's expectation that the negative impact of the fraudulent transactions is largely known. The agency downgraded PNB's foreign currency issuer rating by a notch to 'ba1', which is non-investment grade, from 'Baa3'- meaning below investment grade. "Moody's Investors Service has downgraded the local and foreign currency deposit rating of Punjab National Bank (PNB) to Ba1/NP from Baa3/P-3. At the same time, Moody's has downgraded the bank's baseline credit assessment (BCA) and Adjusted BCA to 'b1' from 'ba3'," the global ratings agency said in a statement. Colgate-Palmolive Q4 net up 32 pc to Rs 188.77 cr

FMCG major Colgate-Palmolive India (CPIL) today reported an increase of 32.39 per cent in its net profit to Rs 188.77 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2018 led by strong volume growth. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 142.58 crore in the January-March quarter a-year ago, Colgate-Palmolive said in a BSE filing. CPIL's total income during the quarter under review stood at Rs 1,100.14 crore. It was Rs 1,186.03 crore in the corresponding quarter of the last fiscal. CPIL Managing Director Issam Bachaalani said, " In the fourth quarter, we delivered strong volume growth of 4 per cent despite a competitive business environment." The company's total expenses stood at Rs 824.62 crore. For the entire 2017-18, CPIL's net profit stood at Rs 673.37 crore. It was Rs 577.43 crore in 2016-17.
