Canada shock Ireland by 12 runs for first win in T20 World Cup 2024

Canada punched above their weight to shock fancied Ireland by 12 runs and record their first win in the T20 World Cup on a pitch that played much better and where the batters weren't getting hit here on Friday. Asked to bat first, Canada struggled to force the pace until Barbadian-born Nicholas Kirton threw caution to the wind and lifted them to a fighting 137 for seven. Kirton blazed away to a 35-ball 49 and wicketkeeper Shreyas Movva chipped in with 37 in 36 deliveries as the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium saw 100 being crossed for the first time in the tournament. In reply, Ireland too went past the three-figure mark but fell short of the 138-run target set by Canada, ending at 125 for seven. George Dockrell (30 not out) and Mark Adair (34 off 24 balls) revived Ireland's prospects with their excellent partnership of 62 runs, but they couldn't see their team through. Jeremy Gordon (2/16) and Dillon Heyliger (2/18) bowled brilliantly to stop their higher-ranked ...

T20 World Cup 2024: Ireland bank on stalwarts to fire against Canada

Ireland will bank on their experienced batters Andy Balbirnie, Paul Stirling and Harry Tector to recover from the pummeling given by India and get their T20 World Cup campaign back on track when they face a dangerous Canada here on Friday. Ireland went down by eight wickets against India on Wednesday, while Canada will be eager to recover after a seven-wicket loss to co-hosts USA. Playing in their eighth T20 World Cup, Ireland have often struggled to make an impression in the event despite several of their key players playing in English county. In fact, they have made it to the 'Super 8' only once in 2009. Balbirnie and captain Stirling, who have a combined experience of more than 250 T20Is, were unable to give the side a decent start on a difficult pitch at the Nassau Country Stadium, even as rival skipper Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant showed the way with their batting master-class while guiding India to a huge win. Tector, a veteran of 77 T20Is, too failed to kick on as Ireland

T20 World Cup 2024 Warm-Up: Heyliger powers Canada to 63-run win over Nepal

A four-wicket burst by pacer Dilon Heyliger powered Canada to a smooth 63-run win over Nepal during the first-round warm-up matches ahead of the T20 World Cup here on Tuesday. Asked to bat first, Canada, who are set to make their debut in the marquee ICC event, made 183 for seven aided by Nicholas Kirton's 51 and Ravinderpal Singh's unbeaten 41 off 17 balls. Heyliger (4/20) then ripped through the Nepal line-up as they could only make 120 before getting bowled out with three balls to spare. After the early return of Aaron Johnson, Kirton and Navneet Dhaliwal revived their innings with a half-century stand for the second wicket. Heyliger (13) also chipped in with the bat, helping Ravinderpal to make 48 for the unbroken eighth wicket partnership. The 34-year-old later returned to rattle Nepal with the ball in a fine spell. Kushal Malla top-scored for Nepal with 37 off 30 balls as they struggled to build partnerships with seven batters posting scores in the single digits. In Trinid

Canadians head home after wildfire evacuation order ends after 2 weeks

Residents in the western Canadian city of Fort Nelson, British Columbia, were given permission Monday to return home after more than 4,700 were evacuated from the community for more than two weeks due to wildfires. The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality and the Fort Nelson First Nation jointly rescinded their evacuation orders, lifting roadblocks and clearing the way for people to go home. About 4,700 people were forced to leave their homes in Fort Nelson on May 10, when strong winds pushed the Parker Lake wildfire within a few miles of the town. The wildfire is now classified as being held." The BC Wildfire Service said rain on Sunday and the efforts of firefighters meant the 123-square-kilometer (47-square- mile) fire in the northeastern corner of the province was not expected to grow. But the blaze hasn't been extinguished and the service says it expects parts of it to continue burning into the fall. The fire destroyed four homes and damaged six other properties in the are

Brazil, EU urge India for timely notifications on sugar subsidies at WTO

A group of WTO member countries, including Brazil, Canada and the European Union, have urged India to submit timely notifications on sugar subsidies in the World Trade Organisation, an official said. The issue came up for discussion during the meeting of the WTO's agriculture committee on May 23-24 in Geneva. These countries are also major sugar exporters like India and they allege that support measures by India distort global sugar trade. Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Paraguay, New Zealand, the EU, and Guatemala have "urged India to submit timely notifications on the subsidies", the Geneva-based official said. India has stated that the Indian central and state governments neither paid for nor procured sugarcane from farmers, as all purchases were made by private sugar mills, hence, this information was not included in its notifications of domestic support. The discussion assumes significance as in 2022, India has appealed against a ruling of the World Trade Organization's (WTO) tra
