China will send delegation to North Korea to celebrate founding anniversary

A Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier Liu Guozhong will visit North Korea to participate in celebrations for its 75th founding anniversary, which is on Saturday, the North's state media said Thursday. The report came amid speculation that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is preparing to visit Russia soon for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin that could focus on North Korean arms sales to refill Russian reserves drained by its war on Ukraine. The North's official Korean Central News Agency said the visit by Liu's delegation comes at the invitation of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party. It didn't specify the events the Chinese officials would participate in or whether they would meet Kim. North Korea didn't immediately say whether a Russian delegation was also invited for the celebrations, which are expected to be highlighted by a parade of North Korean militia units. A US official said Monday that Washington expects Kim to make a trip to Russia within this month to

Australia, China open high-level dialogue in 3 yrs in sign of slight thaw

Australia and China opened their first high-level dialogue in three years on Thursday in a sign of a slight thaw to relations between countries that have clashed on everything from human rights to COVID-19 origins to trade. I welcome the recent positive developments in the bilateral relationship, but we know that there is more work to do, said Craig Emerson, the head of the Australian delegation and a former trade minister. The dialogue being held in Beijing will focus on trade, people-to-people links, and security. China's former Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing said the two countries should work together, but added that we should adhere to the liberalization of trade and jointly oppose the Cold War mentality, bloc confrontation and trade protectionism. Beijing often uses those terms in opposing the actions of Western countries, particularly the US. During the freeze in relations with Beijing, Australia formed a nuclear partnership with the US and the United Kingdom that enables ...

Japan joins India, Philippines, Malaysia in rejecting Beijing's new map

Japan has joined India, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan to lodge protests against China over its new "standard map" for including the disputed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea as part of its territory. Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told the media in Tokyo on Tuesday that Japan has lodged a strong protest to China through diplomatic channels over a new map released by Beijing last month. Tokyo urged Beijing to rescind the map because it has a description based on China's unilateral claims on the Senkaku Islands in southern Japan's Okinawa Prefecture, Matsuno has been quoted by the Japanese media. The map describes the Senkakus as the Diaoyu Islands, the Chinese name for the islands. The Japanese-administered islands in the East China Sea are claimed by Beijing. The islands are "indisputably an inherent part of Japanese territory, both historically and under international law," Matsuno said. Japan "responds in a calm and resolute way, based on i

Agro-chemical industry can grow 9% despite Chinese competition: NITI Aayog

India's agro-chemical industry has the potential to grow more than the current nine per cent notwithstanding the competition from China, government think tank Niti Aayog member Ramesh Chand said on Wednesday. Chand also observed that many Western countries are shifting from agrochemicals to biopesticides and the Indian industry needs to pay attention to this aspect. He urged the Agro Chem Federation of India (ACFI) to come out with a document on ease of doing business in agrochemicals. The Niti Aayog member was addressing a panel discussion on the occasion of the sixth annual general meeting of ACFI in the national capital. "The agrochemical industry has achieved a miracle growth of nine per cent... much of this growth rate has happened during the Covid-19 pandemic years when the production activities were seriously disrupted," he said. Despite economic and production disruptions, the domestic agrochemical industry had shown an impressive growth between 2017-18 and 2022-23, he ..

If China wants to play spoiler at G20, that option is available: US NSA

It is for China to decide what role it plays at the G20 Summit in New Delhi, a top US official has said, asserting that if Beijing wants to come in and be a "spoiler", that option is available to it. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan was responding to a question at a White House news conference on Tuesday on the impact of India-China border tensions on the G20 Summit. "As far as the question of tensions between India and China affecting the (G20) summit - really that's up to China. If China wants to come in and play the role of spoiler, of course, that option is available to them, he said. What I think the Chair, India, will encourage them to do what we, the United States and every other member, virtually every other member of the G20 will do, is encourage them to come in, in a constructive way on climate, on multilateral development, bank reform, on debt relief, on technology and set aside the geopolitical questions and really focus on problem-solving and delivering for th

China's power project on Siang River to have cascading effect: Arunachal CM

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Wednesday expressed concern over China's proposed mega hydropower project on the upstream of Siang River in Tibet, stating it will have a cascading effect on India and Bangladesh in the near future. During a zero-hour discussion in the state assembly, initiated by Congress MLA Lombo Tayeng seeking a declaration of recurring annual floods in Siang Valley as a natural calamity, Khandu said China has proposed a 60,000 MW hydro-power plant on the river, called Tsangpo in Tibet, in its 14th five-year plan. "We are worried about the project's impact in the future. Accordingly, a high-level meeting of the Brahmaputra Board was convened recently. The Centre has proposed a barrage on Siang River so that Chinese activities do not affect the river," he said. Khandu said a survey for the proposed barrage will be carried out, and once it is completed, the Centre will decide on the next step. Tayeng, while initiating the discussion, pointed out tha
