China's Liu Jiakun wins Pritzker Prize for people-centric architecture

The annual Pritzker Architecture Prize has been awarded to Liu Jiakun of China, who earned the field's highest honour for affirming architecture that celebrates the lives of ordinary citizens, organizers announced Tuesday. Boost in defence spending coming amid China threats, says Taiwan's minister

Taiwan's defence minister says the island is planning to boost military spending in the face of the rapidly changing international situation and the escalating threats from adversaries. Wellington Koo gave no figures but said President William Lai Ching-te was working with the ministry in consideration of enemy threats and urgent readiness needs, a reference to China's threats to invade the island, which it considers its own territory. Those would increase the proportion of the defence budget in relation to GDP, Koo said, in comments Monday that were embargoed until Tuesday. Taiwan currently spends about 2.45% of its gross domestic product on its military. At the same time, in coordination with national security and foreign policy, the military will continue to deepen cooperation with the United States and other allied nations, expanding multilateral military exchanges to jointly uphold regional peace and stability," Koo said. Taiwan sees a growing threat from China, which regularl

Yawning wealth difference widening inequalities in China, warns report

China's wealthiest individuals continue to grow richer, widening economic inequalities in the country despite the ruling Communist Party's efforts to control private businesses and implement policies aimed at boosting people's incomes, a report here said. The combined wealth of the 5.12 million families in China with over six million yuan (USD 824,000) in assets was stated to be about 150 trillion yuan (over USD seven trillion) in 2024, according to a report published by the Hurun Research Institute. Of this, the wealthiest 130,000 families accounted for 58 per cent in 2024, which is up from 56 per cent a year earlier, the report said. China's per capita disposable income was stated to be 41,314 yuan (over USD 41,314) last year, up 5.3 per cent from 2023, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported, citing the report.
