The Congress-led Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Saturday approved a four per cent increase in house tax amid protest by the BJP councillors. The proposal was supported by Congress members in a meeting of the SMC House and they said hiking the house tax was mandatory to get central government grants for various works. Mayor Surender Chauhan said according to guidelines of the Himachal Pradesh government, 10 per cent increase in tax is required but in view of better collection of tax, a four per cent increase has been recommended. The tax will come into effect after the state government approves the recommendation of the SMC House through a notification. The House also discussed levying a green tax, and a committee of councillors has been constituted on the matter.

Delhi Congress president Anil Chaudhary has written a letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and sought time to discuss the issue of hike in power tariff in the national capital. Discussions regarding the formation of new districts announced in the Rajasthan budget 2023-24 were held in a cabinet meeting here on Friday evening. Decisions on recitation of Preamble and fundamental duties of the Constitution in schools, first increment in the interest of the employees in six months, more opportunities to the youth of the state in government service were also taken in the meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. The cabinet discussed the report presented by the Ramlubhaya Committee, which was formed to look into the demands of new districts, as well as memorandums received from different areas after the announcements of new districts. Discussions regarding the administrative boundaries of the new districts and on suggestions from people were held in the meeting. Gehlot had announced to form 19 new districts in the state budget this year. However, people in some areas have expressed unhappiness over the announcement. Protests have been held in some areas .
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday met some party workers from across the country and took their feedback. The meeting was held at the Congress headquarters on Akbar Road. Kharge said he would continue meeting party workers from across the country. The Maharashtra Congress on Friday met Governor Ramesh Bais and requested him to convey to the President the party's demand that the Manipur government be dismissed in order to end violence there. Gandhi will also meet intellectuals and civil society representatives in Imphal during the day, besides visiting relief camps in the capital of Manipur, they said. On Thursday, he had visited relief camps in Churachandpur, one of the worst affected towns in the ethnic rioting, which has plagued the northeastern state for the last two months. High drama ensued during the trip, as his convoy of cars was stopped at Bishnupur by the local police, fearing the carcade may face attacks. Gandhi eventually turned back and flew down to Churachandpur by a helicopter. The Congress leader is on a two-day visit to Manipur to bring a healing touch to local communities.
