Cyclone Biparjoy, which ripped through Kutch and parts of Saurashtra region of Gujarat, has left a trail of destruction as gusty winds and rains wreaked havoc, officials said. Heavy rains lashed the entire Kutch district since the cyclone started making landfall near Jakhau Port from 6.30 pm on Thursday and the process continued till 2.30 am, an official said. Cyclone Biparjoy makes landfall; strong winds, rains in Kutch, Saurashtra

Cyclone Biparjoy has started making landfall near Jakhau Port in Gujarat's Kutch district after churning across the Arabian Sea for over 10 days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Thursday evening. Winds of up to 145 kmph and heavy rains battered Kutch and Saurashtra coasts as agencies remain on high alert. The landfall process will be completed by midnight. Authorities have evacuated around one lakh people living in vulnerable areas following a prompt warning from the IMD about the "extensive damaging potential" of the cyclone. Officials said 15 NDRF teams, 12 teams of the State Disaster Response Force and personnel of the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Indian Coast Guard and Border Security Force have been deployed for relief and rescue operations. The Met office had earlier warned of very heavy (11.5 cm to 20.4 cm) to extremely heavy rainfall (over 20.5 cm) in Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Rajkot, Morbi and Junagarh districts. Phailin to Amphan: Deadliest cyclones that hit India in last 10 years

Cyclone Biparjoy, packing maximum sustained winds with speeds of up to 145 kmph, is swirling towards the Gujarat coast and is expected to make landfall near Jakhau port in Kutch district. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a warning about the "extensive damaging potential" of the cyclone, authorities have already evacuated around 74,000 people living in vulnerable areas. India, with a total coastal area of 7,516 km, is exposed to around 8 per cent of the world's tropical cyclones. Nearly 32 crore people in 9 coastal states -- Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal on the east coast and Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat on the west coast -- and some Union territories are vulnerable to the impact of cyclones. Majority of the cyclones have their genesis over the Bay of Bengal and strike the east coast of India. However, recent research shows that the frequency, duration, and intensity of cyclones in the Arabian Sea have increased ...

Cyclone Biparjoy: Authorities bank on HAM radio for seamless communication

As powerful cyclone Biparjoy, packing wind speeds up to 140 kilometres per hour, threatens to cripple communication networks after landfall on the Gujarat coast on Thursday evening, authorities have turned to HAM radio for smooth exchange of information. Learning from past experiences, Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) has deployed six HAM radio teams, two of them in Kutch, and mobile units for seamless communication after Biparjoy hits the shore near Jakhau port. HAM radio is considered a reliable mode of messaging during emergencies when wirelines, mobile phones and other traditional terrestrial means of communication fail. Also known as amateur radio, HAM radio involves the use of radio frequency spectrum for non-commercial exchange of messages. GSDMA has deployed six teams with HAM radio units where the impact of the cyclone will likely be the most. Of them, two are in Kutch, Dr Kausal Jani, HAM radio operator of GSDMA, told PTI. During a cyclone, when all ...
