Russia keen to join Sudarshan Chakra project: Charge d'affaires Babushkin

Russia has a "special mechanism" to confront any challenge arising out of the US slapping punitive measures against India for its procurement of Russian crude oil, Russian charge d'affaires Roman Babushkin said on Wednesday. The relations between New Delhi and Washington are on a downturn after US President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to a whopping 50 per cent including a 25 per cent additional duties for India's purchase of Russian crude oil. At a media briefing, Babushkin projected the rapid upswing in his country's ties with New Delhi in several critical areas and said Russia has been a "partner of choice" for India's requirement of various military platforms and hardware. The senior Russian diplomat said Russia is expected to be part of New Delhi's plans to create a new air defence system called Sudarshan Chakra, which was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech. "We proceed from the understanding that when it comes to the ..

Lakshadweep admin mulls acquiring Bitra island for defence purposes

The Lakshadweep administration is considering the acquisition of Bitra, one of the inhabited islands in the archipelago, for defence purposes. A recent government notification outlined this proposal for the Department of Revenue to take over the entire land area of Bitra island. The intent is to transfer it to relevant defense and strategic agencies of the Centre. The notification, issued last week, clarified that the initiative is driven by the strategic location of the island, its national security relevance, and the inherent logistical and administrative challenges posed by the civilian habitation. The territorial administration would take over the island as per the relevant provisions of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resetlement Act, 2013 for which Social Impact Assessment study has to be undertaken for the affected area. District Collector Shivam Chandra, in the order, said all stakeholders, including grama sabhas, wo

Drones, cyberspace add new paradigm to military conflicts: Ex-DGMO

Operation Sindoor has brought into sharp focus the importance of drones in modern warfare, which along with space and cyberspace will write the new paradigm of future military conflicts, a former Director General of Military Operation, who oversaw the Doklam crisis, has said. In an interview with PTI Videos on Thursday, retired Lt. Gen. Anil Kumar Bhatt also expressed his displeasure at suggestions in social media by many war-mongers, who were unhappy with the conflict ending in four days on the grounds that it was an opportunity to reclaim Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. He said war should be the last option and should not be waged since India had achieved its strategic aims.

India and Italy held a two-day meeting in Rome, focusing on ways to expand their military cooperation, including in areas of capability development, the defence ministry said on Saturday.
