Wrestlers' protest: Malik, Phogat, Punia booked after scuffle with police

The Delhi Police booked wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia along with their supporters on charges of rioting and obstructing public servant in discharge of duty after they were detained while marching to the new Parliament building on Sunday. The police said 700 people were detained across Delhi, including 109 protesters at Jantar Mantar. Reacting to the development, Vinesh Phogat said while it took the Delhi Police seven days to register an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, it didn't even take seven hours to book those who were holding a protesting "peacefully". The wrestlers had been protesting at Jantar Mantar against Singh since April 23 demanding his arrest for alleged sexual harassment of seven women grapplers, including a minor. Delhi police issues advisory for inauguration of new Parliament on Sunday

Special traffic arrangements will be put in place in the national capital in view of the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28, police said on Friday. According to the traffic advisory issued, the New Delhi district will be treated as a controlled area. Only public transport vehicles, civil service aspirants, bonafide residents, labelled vehicles and emergency vehicles will be allowed to move in the New Delhi area, it stated. Adequate security arrangements in place in view of farmers' meet: Police

In view of a farmers' meeting in support of protesting wrestlers on Sunday, the Delhi Police has made adequate security arrangements at the protest site at Jantar Mantar and on the national capital's borders, an officer said. According to police, vehicles entering Delhi will be checked and pickets will be increased in the border areas. A senior police officer said that adequate security arrangements will be made in and around Jantar Mantar and added multi-layer barricades have already been placed at the protest site. The whole area will be covered by CCTV cameras to monitor the situation round the clock. Another officer said that pickets will be placed in Delhi's border areas as well and checking will be intensified. If needed, additional security personnel will be deployed. Patrolling will also be increased on Delhi's borders. Delhi Police reply sought on Umar Khalid's plea for bail in UAPA case

The Supreme Court on Thursday sought a response of the Delhi Police on a plea of former JNU student Umar Khalid seeking bail in a UAPA case related to the alleged conspiracy behind the riots here in February 2020. A bench of Justices AS Bopanna and Hima Kohli issued notice to the Delhi government and sought its response in six weeks. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Khalid, pointed out to some dates and said that on the date of incident he was not there. The bench said it is issuing notice and granted liberty to seek listing of the matter vacation bench. Sibal said that the matter be listed after the vacation. The bench then posted the matter for further hearing after the summer vacation of the apex court, which is starting from May 22 and coming to end on July 2. Bomb hoax to Delhi's school in April might be linked to foreign servers

Investigators probing a bomb hoax to the Indian School here last month have traced the source of the threat e-mail to an IP address that might be linked to a server in Germany or Russia, police said on Tuesday. The Indian School in Delhi's Sadiq Nagar received two bomb threats and the latest was on April 12 via an email. The first one was over phone in November 2022. Both turned out to be hoax threats. Following the e-mail threat, the school was evacuated and bomb disposal squads swung into action. However, nothing suspicious was found after a five-hour search operation. "During our probe, technical investigation revealed that the alleged threat via email was sent through the IP address linked to a server in Germany or Russia. However, investigation in such cases are tricky since various protocols need to be followed to carry the probe on International ground," a senior police officer said. Delhi Police issues guidelines for its tourist wing in run-up to G20 summit

Personality development classes, training on curbing tourist-related malpractices and deployment of English-speaking staff are part of the guidelines issued by Delhi Police for the forces' tourist police wing in the run-up to the G20 summit. The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued on Tuesday for "Tourist Police Vans" stated that a task-oriented training program would be conducted for every member of the tourist police unit in association with Delhi Tourism Department and other stakeholders soon. As part of the training, the staff attached to the tourist police wing will be taught soft skills, personality development, effective communication skills and ways to enhance etiquette, manners, attitude and behaviour towards tourists. Nitin Gadkari gets another threat call at official residence in Delhi

An unidentified man made a threatening call on the landline number of Union minister Nitin Gadkari's official residence on Motilal Nehru road here, police said on Tuesday. The call was received by a staff of Gadkari's office Monday night. The caller did not share his details and demanded to speak to the minister and threaten him, a senior police officer said. "The caller spoke in Hindi and said 'mujhe mantri ji se baat karni hai, unhe threaten karna hai' (I want to talk to the minister and want to threaten him), and disconnected the call," he said. The minister's office reported the matter to Delhi Police which is now investigating the matter. "All call records details are being analysed. SIT constituted to probe sexual harassment allegation against WFI chief

The Delhi Police on Friday informed a special court here that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the allegations of sexual harassment levelled by women wrestlers against WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh. The submission was made before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Harjeet Singh Jaspal in response to the court's earlier order directing the police to file a stratus report. Considering the seriousness of the case we have formed a SIT. The SIT will be investigating the case, public prosecutor Atul Srivastava told the court, stating that a status report has been filed in the matter.
