The Delhi University will distribute laptops and tablets to orphaned female and single-parent female students along with visually impaired students on January 4, according to an official statement. The distribution will be done at the inaugural of DU Samarpan Samaroh event slated to be attended by Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan at the Vice Regal Lodge. The distribution of laptops and tablets will take place under the Sashakt Beti' and e-Drishti' programmes, with the vision of promoting digital inclusivity and academic excellence, the statement said. Delhi Police said it has uncovered a large-scale illegal immigration racket involving Bangladeshi nationals and arrested four people, including two persons from the neighbouring country who allegedly entered India illegally, an official said on Thursday. The other two arrested are accused of facilitating the Bangladeshi nationals' unlawful immigration and document fabrication. The immigration racket involved handlers in Bangladesh and India who handled transportation and others in India who helped forge fake documents for their stay in India. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee collected over Rs 112 crore in environmental compensation between April, 2015 and November 20, 2024, the NGT was recently told. According to the Central Pollution Control Board the environmental compensation (EC) was a policy instrument for the protection of the environment and worked on the "polluter pays" principle. In other words, fine was levied on violators of environmental laws and used for restoration. The green body had sought details on the EC imposed and its utilisation from the DPCC. In a report dated December 26, the committee said, DPCC has received Rs 11,208.15 lakh (Rs 112.08 crore) as EC fund from April 2015 till November 20 (2024), and Rs 3,605.66 lakh (Rs 36.05 crore) has been utilised so far. Giving a break-up of the utilisation, the report said the highest amount, about Rs 10.11 crore, was spent on information, education and communication activities, followed by an expenditure of Rs 8.77 crore on strengthening monitoring ..
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a slew of development measures, including 1,675 flats for the residents of JJ clusters and two urban redevelopment projects in the city on Friday. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in a statement said that Modi will visit the newly-constructed flats for the dwellers of Jhuggi Jhopri (JJ) clusters as part of slum rehabilitation project at Swabhiman Apartments in Delhi's Ashok Vihar and hand over keys to the eligible beneficiaries. A 40-year-old man allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence in Kalyan Vihar area of northwest Delhi, an official said on Wednesday. The family members of the deceased identified as Puneet Khurana, a businessman, have levelled allegations against his wife and in-laws. "Khurana's father Trilok Nath has produced his mobile phone and other related articles. The mobile phone of the deceased and other related articles were taken in police possession. The body will be handed over to the family members after post-mortem," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Northwest, Bhisham Singh. The DCP further said that the incident was reported at approximately 4:18 pm on December 31. "Soon after information, a team was immediately rushed to the spot. Endless incarceration without trial in near future falls foul of Article 21 of the Constitution, the Delhi High Court said recently and granted bail to a man held in a cheating case in 2022. Justice Amit Mahajan said if an accused was suffering a prolonged incarceration without a timely trial in the case, courts would ordinarily be obligated to release them on bail.
