On Thursday, a big rig and a passenger vehicle collided in the northbound lanes of the highway and continued across the guardrail and into the path of another big truck and the church van, investigators said. The multi-agency efforts to rescue miners did not yield any substantive result on the 23rd day of the operation Friday, as Navy and NDRF divers failed to venture inside the main shaft to search for the 15 trapped diggers with no visible change in the water level though they waited all day. Sharing details about the day's exercise, operation spokesperson R Susngi told PTI the Fire Service from Odisha has completed pumping out 9 lakh litres of water in the nearby old shaft using two pumps before they stopped work at 5 pm. Although the water level in the abandoned mines nearby went down, the water level at the main shaft has to reduce by about 60 feet from its current level of 160 feet before the rescue divers can operate safely, he said. A fight that caused a fire at a women's shelter in Baghdad on Friday killed nine people and wounded 22 others, police said. An officer at the Rusafa police division said the fire started at the shelter's kitchen after residents got into a fight. The fire quickly spread through the two-story facility in Baghdad's Azamiyah district. Two women died from stab wounds and seven in the fire, according to the officer, who asked to have his name withheld in line with police regulations. Twenty-two others were being treated for injuries at two nearby hospitals. In the latest development in the Meghalaya Miner rescue efforts, the water has been pumped out of the old shaft and is said to have receded by 3.5 feet.Odisha Fire Service on Friday pumped out water from the inundated illegal coal mine in East Jaintia Hills where as many as 15 miners have been trapped.In an attempt to drain the water, Coal India Limited (CIL) had inserted the pump into the old shaft, however, the connection of the pipes is still on.According to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the pump is expected to be functional by Saturday. The pumping of water from the main shaft is also expected by Saturday.Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court had asked the Centre and Meghalaya government to file a status report before it by January 7 on the rescue.As many as 15 miners have been trapped in a 370-feet deep illegal mine in Lumthari village since December 13, when the water from the nearby river Lytein flooded the mine.

Two people were killed and seven injured when a bus collided with an SUV in Nagpur district of Maharashtra Friday morning, police said. The accident took place at Dahegaon (Rangari) village in Saoner tehsil around 6.30 am, said police inspector Sanjay Purandare. The driver of the bus did not see a Tavera car coming from the opposite direction while negotiating a turn which resulted in collision, he said. The car was heading from Khapa to Nagpur. There were nine people inside who were returning after attending a kawwali program. Two of them died while others were injured. The deceased were identified as Mohhamad Rafiq Ansari (18) and Sheikh Noor Mohhamad (18), both residents of Nagpur. The bus driver fled from the spot, police said, adding that further probe was on.
Norwegian police say four skiers who went missing after an avalanche in northern Norway this week have most likely died. Police spokesman Morten Pettersen says "we no longer have any hopes of finding anyone alive." He said a helicopter on Friday picked up two avalanche beacon signals from an area in Tamok valley, near the northern city of Tromsoe, that had been hit by an avalanche. The skiers included a woman from Sweden and three men from Finland. Mads Gilbert of the University Hospital of North Norway told a news conference in Tromsoe that "it was impossible to survive nearly two days buried in snow." A search-and-rescue operation was launched after Wednesday's 300-meter wide avalanche. The skiers were last heard from that day. Four persons died and three injured as a cement-laden truck jumped the divider and fell on two cars on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway Friday morning. Due to the impact, one of the car fell into the roadside gorge. A police official said the truck, heading for Mumbai, jumped the divider and overturned while negotiating a turn and fell on two cars in the opposite lane near Khalapur around 11.45 am. One of the cars was pushed off the edge of the road and fell down 40 feet into a gorge, he said. Four passengers died in the mishap, while three persons sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital, an official attached to Khapoli police station said. The condition of two of them was stated to be critical, he added. Of the deceased, Nikita Angre, Chitra Angre and Pranali Kudekar were travelling in the cars, while Hasan Patel was in the truck. It is not yet clear whether Patel was driving the truck or was a cleaner (driver's assistant), the official added.
Three persons died and another was injured when a car they were travelling in fell into a deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district, police said Friday. The incident occurred near Chanju Chowk in Churah area on Thursday night and, prima facie, it appears to be a case of rash and negligent driving, said Chamba Superintendent of Police (SP) Monika Bhutungru. Three occupants of the vehicle died on the spot, while the driver, Gian Singh, sustained injuries. The deceased have been identified as Upendra, Tek Chand and Bittu, the SP said. A case has been registered against the driver under Sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (endangering life), 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code, she added.
The Tamil Nadu government Friday enhanced the compensation for fishermen whose fibre reinforced plastic boats fitted with nets had been damaged during the November 16 cyclone 'Gaja' that lashed the Cauvery delta districts of the state. Chief Minister K Palaniswami said 52 people had died in the cyclonic storm that left a trail of destruction in districts such as Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur. The chief minister made the announcement while replying to a special call attention moved by the opposition, including DMK, which sought waiver of crop loans in the affected areas. As many as 496 of the total 1,123 samples of packaged drinking water analysed during 2017-18 were found to be non-conforming to the prescribed standards of the food safety norms, the Lok Sabha was informed Friday. Minister of State for Health Ashwini Choubey said 246 cases were registered during the period in which conviction was ordered in 97 cases, while penalties were imposed in 135 cases. In 2016-17, 697 samples were analysed, of which 224 were found to be violating the provisions under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006 and cases was launched in 131 cases, Choubey said. Of these, conviction was ordered in 33 cases and penalties were imposed in 40 cases, he said. Instances of sale of packaged drinking water not meeting the prescribed standards have come to the notice of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The Centre told the Supreme Court Thursday that it was facing difficulties in rescuing 15 miners trapped since December 13 in an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya as there was no blueprint of the 355-feet well which has "maze of rat holes". The government told a bench comprising Justice A K Sikri and S Abdul Nazeer that the illegal mine was located near a river and seepage of water from the river was hindering the rescue operation. The bench observed that initially "no serious efforts" were made to rescue these trapped persons but now it seems that the authorities are making efforts. The court directed the Centre and Meghalaya government to file on January 7 a status report detailing the steps taken and also the progress made in the rescue operation. The top court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) which has sought urgent steps for rescuing these miners.
