All 8 victims in Denmark rail accident identified

Danish police said Friday they had identified the eight victims killed in a train accident earlier this week, all of them Danes and ranging in age from 27 to 60. The three men and five women were not related to each other and hail from different regions of the country, a police statement said. The accident occurred early Wednesday when a truck trailer appeared to blow off a cargo train in strong winds and hit a passenger train travelling in the opposite direction on the Great Belt Bridge linking the islands of Zealand, where Copenhagen is located, and Funen. Sixteen others were hurt, but none of them suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver of the passenger train had slowed down after feeling the strong winds on the bridge, his lawyer Torben Koch told daily Berlingske. Four killed in accident on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

Four persons were killed and three injured in an accident on the Mumbai-Pune ExpresswayFriday, police said. A truck, while negotiating a turn, keeled over and fell on two cars in the opposite lane below near Khalapur around 11.45 am, a police officer said. One of the cars was pushed off the edge of the road and fell down 40 feet into a gorge, he said. Four passengers in the cars including two women died while three persons sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital, he said. The condition of two of them was stated to be critical, the official added.

Building collapse: Factory unit was operating 'illegally'; SDMC had served notice in Dec

Commercial activity was going on "illegally" in the two-storey building, which collapsed in west Delhi's Sudarshan Park claiming lives of seven people, and a closure notice was served on its owner last month, a senior official said Friday. The area falls under the jurisdiction of the West Zone of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation and an SDMC team visited the site after the mishap and assisted the Delhi Disaster Management Authority staff in the rescue operation, he said. "The collapse is said to have been triggered by a blast on the first floor of the building where a factory unit was operating, which blew the roof. And, the side walls then collapsed under the weight of the debris deposited on the floor," the senior SDMC official said. Chemical factory gutted in fire at Badlapur near Mumbai

A fire completely destroyed a chemical factory at Badlapur near Mumbai Friday morning, a fire brigade official said. Chief fire officer of the Kulgaon Badlapur Municipal Council Ramesh Patil said there were no casualties. The fire broke out at a factory located in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area about 10.15 am, he said. Ten fire engines were rushed to the spot and the fire-fighting operation was on even after more than three hours, he said. The cause of the blaze was yet to be ascertained, Patil said. The firemen stopped the flames from spreading to the adjacent cloth manufacturing factory, he said. A few drums of chemicals in the factory premises exploded, he said.

Fire breaks out in Noida village

Several shanties were gutted in a major fire that broke out at a village here early Friday, police said. The fire broke out at Sarfabad village in Sector 73 at around 3.15 am, a senior officer said. "Fire tenders from the entire district were rushed to the spot and the flames were doused by 4.30 am," Circle Officer, Noida 3rd, Shwetabh Pandey said. He said one person had received burn injuries in the fire and was admitted to a hospital. The cause of the blaze was not known immediately and a probe was on, Pandey said.

3 dead as gas station fire in Kabul spreads to building

An Afghan official says an overnight fire that began at a gas station in the Afghan capital and spread to a nearby apartment complex has killed three people and injured 27 others. Health Ministry spokesman Wahidullah Mayer says six women are in critical condition in a hospital. Saifullah, an eyewitness who, like many Afghans uses only one name, says the fire began shortly after midnight at a gas station in Kabul's eastern Macroyan neighborhood. It quickly spread to a nearby cement block apartment complex. Police officials contacted by The Associated Press say the fire is still under investigation and have so far refused to speculate on the cause. Eyewitnesses say a gas-filled tanker parked on the gas station premises also caught fire, causing the blaze to spread quickly.

7 killed after fiery crash, fuel spill on Florida highway

Two big rigs and two passenger vehicles collided and spilled diesel fuel across a Florida highway Thursday, sparking a massive fire that killed seven people, authorities said. The wreck happened on Interstate 75 about 1.6 kilometres south of Alachua, near Gainesville. The flames were fed by about 189 litres of diesel, authorities said. Several others were taken to the hospital, some with critical injuries, the Gainesville Sun reported. Dense fog leads to vehicle pile-up on Kanjhawala-Bawana road, several injured

Several people were injured Thursday in a pile-up of 25 vehicles due to dense fog on the Kanjhawala-Bawana road of outer Delhi, police said. A woman travelling in a car received serious injuries while several others suffered minor injuries, they said. Police said they were informed at 7.30 am about an accident on the Kanjhawala-Bawana road near Nangal Thakuran village. The incident took place when a car travelling on the road caught fire and stopped on middle of the road, he said. The occupants of the car safely abandoned the vehicle. But due to fog, other vehicles pilled up after a car hit the abandoned four-wheeler, he added. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital and discharged after first aid, police said. Four-year-old girl dies in LPG blast

A four-year-old girl died and a man received injuries when a cooking gas cylinder exploded in a house here Thursday evening and led to a fire, said a civic official. The incident took place at 5.21 pm in a 'chawl' (tenement) in Kranti Nagar, suburban Kurla, when the LPG cylinder suddenly exploded and caused a minor fire in and around the house, the official from the Disaster Management Unit of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. "Our fire brigade jawans reached the spot and extinguished the flames by 5.55 pm," the official said. Two people - a four-year-old girl, Anushka Chaurasia, and one Ravi Parmar (21) received injuries in the blast and the subsequent fire, he said. Both were taken to nearby Rajawadi Hospital where the gril was declared brought dead, the official said. The condition of Parmar is stable," he added.
