SC dissatisifed with efforts by Meghalaya govt to rescue 15 trapped miners; says bring them out dead or alive

The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed strong dissatisfaction over the rescue efforts to trace 15 people trapped in a mine in Meghalaya for 22 days, telling the state government to bring them out dead or alive. The tough talk by the apex court came on a day when the multi-agency operations to rescue the miners failed to make any headway with efforts to pump the water out of the mine not yielding any result. The 15 miners remain trapped in the 370-foot-deep illegal rat-hole coal mine in Lumthari village of East Jaintia Hills district since December 13 after water from a nearby river gushed in. "For people who are trapped there, every minute counts," the court said and suggested that the help of the Army could be also taken. Holding that "prompt, immediate and effective" operation is needed to rescue the trapped people, the court said there should not be any delay as it was a question of life and death. Centre examining proposal for Delhi Metro's Phase-IV, Parliament told

The Centre is examining the proposal for Phase-IV of Delhi Metro after it was forwarded by the city government in the last week of December, Parliament was informed Thursday. In reply to a written question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri said the proposal was received by the Centre on December 28. "The proposal of Delhi Metro Phase-IV has been received from the government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi through Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on 28.12.2018 and is under examination," Puri said. In reply to another question, he said that no fund has been approved for the project so far. 5 students among 7 injured as school bus overturns in Himachal

Seven persons, including five students, were injured after a private school bus overturned in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district Thursday, police said. The 36-seater bus of Rose Public school was carrying 32 students when it overturned on the Suliali-Kuther road, Nurpur Sub Divisional Police Officer Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sahil Arora said. The injured students were identified as Nandini, Parth, his sister Muskan, Payal and her brother Akshay. The other persons included bus driver Chandan Kumar, 20, and attendant Varyam Singh ,32, he said. The DSP said the injured were later discharged from a hospital after first aid. The exact cause of the accident is yet not clear, he said, adding that there were several potholes on the road and prima facie it was found that the driver was driving negligently. 37 dead in Russian building collapse

At least 37 people have died after a residential building collapsed here earlier this week, authorities said on Thursday.A spokesperson from the Russian Emergencies Ministry confirmed the death toll, Sputnik reported.On December 31 last year, a natural gas blast hit a section of a block of flats in Magnitogorsk city, leading to the destruction of 35 apartments and causing damage to 10 others.Meanwhile, search and rescue operations are underway, as dozens of people are feared to be trapped under the rubble.The Russian government have taken cognisance and are monitoring the situation.A day of mourning for those killed in the collapse was declared on Wednesday.

4 skiers missing after avalanche in northern Norway

Norwegian officials say four people from Sweden and Finland are missing after an avalanche in northern Norway but strong winds, heavy snowfall and poor visibility are hampering rescue efforts. A woman from Sweden and three men from Finland were last heard from on Wednesday afternoon. A search-and-rescue operation was launched after a 300-meter (990-foot) wide avalanche was reported in the Tamok valley, near the northern city of Tromsoe, where the party had gone skiing. Police spokesman Morten Pettersen says "there was little chance to get a helicopter into the area." He told a news conference Thursday in Tromsoe that "we cannot take that risk." Death toll jumps to 37 in Russian gas blast

The number of confirmed dead from a New Year's Eve gas explosion in a Russian apartment block jumped to 37 on Thursday as rescuers recovered more bodies from the rubble of the partially collapsed building. Six children were among the dead, the emergency situations ministry said in a statement, and four people were still unaccounted for. Rescuers have been braving temperatures as low as minus 27 degrees Celsius (minus 16 degrees Fahrenheit) to search through mangled concrete and metal at the site in the Ural mountains city of Magnitogorsk. Dissatisfied with Meghalaya govt steps to rescue miners, need urgent operations: SC

The Supreme Court Thursday expressed dissatisfaction over the steps taken by the Meghalaya government to rescue 15 miners trapped in an illegal coal mine since December 13, saying "prompt, immediate and effective" operation is needed to rescue them as it was a matter of life and death. "Every minute counts" for those trapped there for almost three weeks, it said. Over 28 lakh people fined for traffic violations in Hry till Nov' 18: Police

More than 28 lakh people were challaned for traffic violations in the state till November 2018, and over Rs 62 crore has been recovered as fine from them, Haryana Police said here Thursday. Between January 1 and November 30, 2018, the highest number of 12,54,116 challans were issued to offenders in district Gurugram alone followed by 2,51,232 challans in Faridabad, 1,24,408 in Rohtak and 1,08,590 in Panipat, Director General of Police (DGP) B S Sandhu said. Police recovered fine of over Rs 22.07 crore and Rs 5.66 crore from Gurugram and Faridabad respectively, he said. The lowest numbers of 14,337 challans were recorded in Charkhi-Dadri, a new district. Sandhu said that Police is contemplating to bring down road fatalities at minimum level as most of the accidents take place due to traffic violations. Earthquake rattles southwest Japan, no damage reported

An earthquake has shaken southwestern Japan but there are no immediate reports of damage or risk of tsunami. The Japan Meteorological Agency says the quake measured a preliminary magnitude 5.0, rattling the Fukuoka, Nagasaki and Kumamoto areas in the southwest of the main island of Kyushu. It hit early Thursday evening. National broadcaster NHK TV warned people to stay calm and watch against dangers such as shaking, mudslides and items falling from shelves. 11 dead, 17 injured in separate road accidents in Jharkhand

Eleven people, including two children, were killed and 17 others injured in separate road accidents in Jharkhand Thursday, police said. A speeding trailer mowed down the children and one person sleeping on a footpath in the early hours near the Tatanagar Railway station here, they said. Four people were injured in the incident that took place after the driver of the trailer lost control over the vehicle, hit a divider and ran over the people, East Singhbhum district Deputy Superintendent of Police Alok Ranjan said. The injured were rushed to the M G M Hospital, he said, adding, that the driver has been arrested and the vehicle confiscated. Meghalaya mine: No change in water level

The multi-agency operations to rescue the miners in Meghalaya failed to make any headway on Thursday, with efforts to pump the water out of the mine not yielding any result. Army jawan dies in avalanche in J&K

A soldier died and another was injured when an avalanche hit an Army post along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district on Thursday, police said. The avalanche hit the post of Rashtriya Rifles in Sawjian sector in the morning. It buried two soldiers, following which a rescue operation was launched immediately, the police said. SC raps Meghalaya government over miners' tragedy

Patient dies at govt hospital, family members allege

Family members of a patient, who was injured in a motorcycle accident, have alleged that the person died at a state-run hospital in West Bengal after lying unattended for 10 hours on Wednesday. They alleged negligence on part of the doctors at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital near Siliguri. Shiv Kamal Mhanata, 33, admitted to the hospital in the early hours on Wednesday, was not even administered saline and medicines, his family members claimed.
