Two earthquakes of magnitude 4.3 and 3.7 struck Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday but there were no reports of any damage or loss, officials said. The first quake of magnitude 4.3, which occurred at 2:30 pm, had its epicentre in Ladakh at a depth of 10 km, officials of the Disaster Management Department said here. This was followed by another tremor of magnitude 3.7 that took place at 3:12 pm at a depth of 10 km in the same region, they said. No loss of life or property has been reported so far, the officials said.
Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit Thursday announced contribution of his November salary towards relief and rehabilitation activities in areas affected by Cyclone Gaja. A Raj Bhavan release said the cyclone has brought in its wake heavy devastation and damage in several districts of the state. To help in alleviating the sufferings of people and to assist in relief and rehabilitation efforts, the governor has contributed his November salary to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund, the statement said. Cyclone Gaja crossed the state coast between Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam on November 16, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming 63 lives. The governor had earlier visited the cyclone-affected Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur and Thanjavur districts.

: Two devotees of Lord Ayyappa died on the spot and two others were injured in a road accident near Perundurai in the district early Thursday, police said. The devotees, numbering 20, were proceeding in a van from Vellore to the Ayyappa shrine in Sabarimala, Kerala, when their vehicle was hit by a container lorry trying to overtake it, the police said. Under the impact, Palani (45) and Nagarajan (44) were killed and three other devotees injured, they said. The injured were admitted to the government hospital at Perundurai and their condition was said to be serious, they added.
Three people were killed in a fire that broke out in a section of the rubber plant at the Reliance Industries' complex here Thursday, the company said. The blaze erupted in the PBR2 (polybutadiene rubber) plant here, the company said in a statement. "In an unfortunate incident this morning, a fire broke out in PBR2 plant of the Vadodara complex. The fire was restricted to one section of the plant and timely action by Reliance fire fighting team helped in quickly extinguishing the fire," it said. Three contractual workers, who were injured in the mishap, later succumbed to injuries despite best efforts of the medical team, it said. "Our prayers and sympathies are with their families in their time of grief and we will support the families to overcome their personal tragedy," the company said. An investigation will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the fire, the statement said, adding that the rest of the complex continued with normal operations.

The rocket lifted off majestically into cloudy skies in a burst of orange flames at 9.57 am from the first launch pad at this spaceport at the end of a 28-hour countdown. Air India on Thursday confirmed that its flight from New Delhi with 179 passengers on board, hit a building at Stockholm's Arlanda airport while it taxied towards the gate.An official of the national carrier said that AI 167 to Stockholm hit a terminal building at the airport on Wednesday, due to which one wing of the aircraft got damaged.The plane is presently grounded and passengers travelling from Stockholm to New Delhi on the same flight have been shifted to another flight.All 179 passengers have reached Stockholm safely.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched its workhouse rocket PSLV-C43 carrying India's earth observation satellite HysIS and 30 other satellites, including 23 from the United States, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on Thursday.The HysIS satellite will take photographs of planet Earth in multiple frequencies with a mission life of over five years. It can provide universal coverage and give valuable data on agriculture, forestry, geological environments, coastal zones, and inland waters.The total weight of 30 co-passenger satellites is 261.5 kg. All these satellites will be placed in a 504 km orbit by PSLV-C43. These satellites have been commercially contracted for launch through Antrix Corporation Limited, the commercial arm of ISRO. A fireman was killed and another personnel received injuries while trying to douse a blaze that broke out at a restaurant in Maharashtra's Thane district in the early hours of Thursday, an official said. The fire brigade got a call around 1 am about the blaze at the restaurant located near Golden Park housing society in Kalyan township, Aadharwadi fire station's sub-officer Namdeo Chowdhary said. A team of six firemen from the Aadharwadi fire station then rushed to the spot. While they were trying to put out the flames, an explosion took place at the food joint, killing fireman Jagan Amle (57) on the spot, Chowdhary said. Another firefighter received burn injuries in the mishap and was admitted to a nearby hospital, he said. The other firemen managed to control the blaze, he said, adding that cooling operation was underway at the site. A case was registered and a probe was on to ascertain the cause of the fire, the official said.
Authorities recovered six bodies including those of four children Wednesday from the rubble of a burned-out northern Indiana home, police said. The victims of the fire outside Logansport included a 25-year-old woman and her three children, two daughters ages 3 and 1, and a 3-month-old son, Indiana State Police Sgt. Tony Slocum said. The other victims were a 42-year-old man and his 10-year-old daughter. The man's wife and his adult son survived the fire and were taken to a local hospital, Slocum said. The relationship between the two families wasn't immediately clear, he said. Neighbours reported the fire about 2 a.m. Wednesday at the rural home about 115 kilometers north of Indianapolis.
