Assam: Bus carrying 40 students catches fire

A bus ferrying around 40 students caught fire at Bogamati Ambarish Nagar here on Saturday morning.According to reports, as many as eight passengers have sustained severe burn injuries.The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained however, it is being suspected that an electric short circuit might have initiated the fire.The bus with Assam registration was carrying students of Routs's Serenga Foundation College to Bagamati.In the incident, the students and teachers were immediately evacuated from the bus thus averting any major tragedy.

Accidental fire burns 200 kg of stubble in Rohtak

As much as 200 kg's of stubble got burnt in an accidental fire here on Saturday.The huge stock of stubble was collected at the place for commercial purposes. The stack had about 300 Kg's of stubble purchased from different farmers.Sharing details of the incident, Sriram, the owner of the stubble stack said, "We complied with the government directive of not burning stubble and stored it but with today's fire we have to bear the loss of about 5 to 6 Lakh rupees. It appears like a short circuit caused the fire."Six fire tenders were pressed into action to control the fire, however.Fireman Ravindra Kumar said, "We received information about a large amount of stubble catching fire at this place and fire tenders were immediately rushed to spot. Uganda: At least 10 die in boat accident on Lake Victoria

A Ugandan police official says at least 10 people have died in a boat accident on Lake Victoria. Police spokesman Emilian Kayima said late Saturday that police marine units had pulled 40 survivors from the water. He said search and rescue efforts will continue overnight for others believed to be trapped under the water in the completely submerged boat. He gave no details on the cause of the accident. It was not immediately clear how many people were on board. Boat accidents are increasingly common on East Africa's major lakes including Lake Victoria, which is surrounded by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Over 200 people were killed in a Tanzanian ferry disaster in September, with officials saying it had been dangerously overcrowded.

Indonesia plane crash: Body of Indian pilot identified

The Indonesian authorities on Saturday identified the body of Indian pilot, Captain Bhavya Suneja, who captained the ill-fated Lion Air flight JT610 which crashed into the Java sea on October 29.Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj took to Twitter to confirm the news and said, "Indonesian authorities have confirmed identification of the body of Capt.Bhavya Suneja. The remains will be handed over to the family in the presence of @IndianEmbJkt today. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family."Captain Suneja was a resident of Mayur Vihar, Delhi, who did his schooling from Ahlcon Public School in 2005. Panic as ferry hits dock at San Francisco's Ferry Building

Authorities say a ferry boat carrying 53 passengers crashed into a dock at San Francisco's famed Ferry Building, injuring two people on board. A spokeswoman for Golden Gate Ferry told the Marin Independent Journal that the ferry coming from Larkspur was damaged in Friday's crash. Priya Clemens says the cause of the accident is under investigation, and employees aboard are being questioned. A witness told The Associated Press that the ferry had bumped into one dock before careening toward another. Tiffany Dennis said the crash set off panic among a crowd of people dining and shopping at the waterfront attraction. The vessel came to a stop when it struck a concrete walkway. 3 injured as bus collides with empty rake in Navi Mumbai

A Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) bus collided with an empty local train near Sanpada crossing on Saturday, due to which three passengers sustained injuries. The injured passengers were taken to the hospital and attended to by the senior officials and doctors from the Central Railway.The bus driver was attempting to cross the track at an unauthorised crossing between Sanpada car shed and Juinagar at around 3 pm today when it collided with an empty rake.An official statement released by the Central Railways read, "The road has been built by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) without the approval of Railways. Railway has been insisting Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and CIDCO to construct Rail Over Bridge (ROB) from past many years."Furthermore, an officer-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Mild tremors in Palghar district of Maharashtra

Tremors measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale were recorded in parts of Palghar district in coastal Maharashtra Saturday, authorities said. No loss of life was reported but houses in some villages in Dahanu and Talasari tehsils developed cracks, district disaster management cell chief Vivekanand Kadam said. The tremors were felt around 3.15 in the afternoon, he said. An official release said that district collector Dr Prashant Narnavre has asked people not to panic as the tremors were of low intensity.

K'taka bus accident: Rahul Gandhi expresses his condolences to families of victims

Congress President Rahul Gandhi expressed his condolences to the families of around 30 people who were killed after their bus fell into a canal in Karnataka's Mandya district on Saturday. Officials said as of latest count, at least 30 passengers, most of them women and children, were killed in the accident. The private bus, which was moving on a road along the VC canal at Kanaganamaradi, 105 km southwest of Bengaluru, swerved and fell into it, completely submerging the vehicle and killing the victims instantaneously, they said. Trainer aircraft hits airport boundary wall in Gujarat

A two-seater trainer aircraft belonging to a private aviation institute hit boundary wall of the Mehsana airport in Gujarat Saturday during a training exercise, an official said. The aircraft overshot the runway after landing. Nobody was injured in the mishap though the aircraft was damaged, Mehsana district collector H K Patel said. A team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will visit the airport Sunday to conduct an inquiry, he said. "The aircraft went beyond the runway after landing and hit the wall," Patel said. Mehsana airport is mainly used as a civil aviation training base and for non-scheduled operations.

Indonesian plane crash: Body of Indian pilot identified

Indonesian authorities have identified the body of Indian pilot Bhavye Suneja who captained the ill-fated Indonesian plane that crashed into the sea on October 29. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, in a tweet, announced about identification of Suneja's body. "Indonesian authorities have confirmed identification of the body of Capt.Bhavya Suneja. Gaja: Central team begins inspection of cyclone-hit TN regions

A central team deputed to assess the damage caused by cyclone Gaja in Tamil Nadu Saturday held discussions with Chief Minister K Palaniswami here and later began its inspection of the storm hit regions in Pudukottai district. After the team members, led by Joint Secretary in the Union Home ministry Daniel E Richard, held talks with the chief minister at the Secretariat this morning, they visited Pudukottai later in the day. The team, on its first day of inspection, assessed the extent of damage to standing crops, banana plantations, houses and electricity infrastructure and its restoration including putting up electricity poles, official sources told PTI. 4 killed as pick-up van overturns

Four people were killed and 18 injured when the pick-up van, in which they were travelling to attend a cremation, overturned in Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh district on Saturday morning, police said. The incident took place near Palthi bazar in Didarganj area when the driver lost control of the vehicle. 2 killed, 57 injured in warehouse blast in China

Two people were killed and 57 injured in a warehouse explosion in northeast China's Jilin Province, state media reported on Saturday. The explosion on Friday night also caused a fire which was put out on Saturday morning. Dense smoke can still be seen at the site. A total of 370 houses have been damaged, with 15 having collapsed. The accident occurred at around 11:40 pm on Friday in a warehouse of Jiangcheng Machinery Company in Sanhe Township, Dongfeng County, leaving two people dead, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The injured are receiving treatment and the condition of one of the injured was stated to be serious. Li Tao, a local resident, said he was sent to hospital in Dongfeng County at around 1:00 am. The explosion shattered the tiles and glass of his house. He later noticed scratches on his forehead and arms.
