Fire breaks out at ICAI building in central Delhi

A fire broke out on the third floor of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India building on ITO road here on Thursday, the Delhi Fire Service said. No casualty has been reported. A call about the fire was received at 9.10 am. Four fire tenders and another vehicle was rushed to the spot. The fire was controlled by 9.30 am, a senior Delhi Fire Service officer said. Stationery items and furniture were damaged, the fire officer said. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

California wildfire: Kim K, Kanye donate $500,000 for relief

Kim Kardashian and her rapper husband Kanye West are doing their bit to help California rebuild, as the state grapples with the most destructive wildfire to date.Kim, who recently appeared on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show', announced two donations of USD 200,000 each- one going to the Wildfire Relief Fund and the other to the California Fire Foundation.The 38-year-old also expressed gratitude to the firefighters who saved their homes. "We're so grateful to them. Sheriff: Wildfire death toll rises to 83

A California sheriff says two more sets of human remains have been found, bringing death toll from a wildfire to 83. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea says more than 560 names remain on the missing list. Authorities stressed that many of the people on the list may be safe and unaware they have been reported missing. The blaze that started November 8 levelled Paradise, destroying more than 13,000 homes. Paradise is about 140 miles north of San Francisco. The cause of the fire has not been determined. PG&E reported an outage on a transmission line near the time and place where the fire began. The company is targeted in at least two other lawsuits filed by people who survived the blaze but lost their homes. A PG&E spokeswoman says safety is the company's highest priority. 6 coaches of empty rake derail in UP's Rampur

Six coaches of an empty rake derailed in Rampur district between Damora and Duggan station on Moradabad-Bareilly Junction section on late Wednesday night.The incident blocked the railway line which led to a delay of several other trains. At least 17 trains are expected to be affected (Diversion/Short termination) by the derailment.However, no casualties have been reported as yet.The downline between Moradabad and Bareilly Junction has been diverted via Moradabad-Chandausi-Bareilly route.Following the incident, the railways set up a guideline in accordance to which proper announcements are being made at all major stations. It has also released the emergency numbers.Ticket Checking Staff working in the affected trains have also been advised to inform the passengers regarding short termination or diversion.

Heavy rains unearth Iraqi mines in Kuwaiti desert

Unprecedented heavy rains which recently lashed Kuwait unearthed dozens of land mines planted by Iraqi troops during their 1990-91 occupation, disrupting the emirate's popular desert camping season, officials said Wednesday. Authorities have closed 18 desert sites and have so far removed at least 48 mines after receiving complaints from the campers, they said. The civil defence committee has urged campers to delay their plans until after the defence ministry has searched the areas, said Fahad al-Shutaily, deputy director of Kuwait's Jahra and Farwaniya governorates. "Floods have uncovered and carried away scores of mines, bombs and ammunition left by the Iraqi army in desert areas. We are waiting for the defence ministry to hand over the areas after clearing them," Shutaily told AFP. The ministry of defence is currently searching at least 18 sites which are normally used for camping. Odisha bus accident toll 10, not 12, clarifies hospital

Altogether 10 persons were killed in Tuesday's bus accident in Odisha's Cuttack district, and not 12 as has been reported earlier, an official of state-run SCB Medical College and Hospital said Wednesday. The hospital had actually received 10 bodies, including those of three women, and 42 injured persons, the hospital's Emergency Officer Dr B N Moharana said. Moharana on Tuesday said 12 bodies were brought to the hospital along with 49 injured people. However, he did not elaborate on the change in the number of casualties. Seven critically injured persons are in the ICU and they are being treated by a team of doctors drawn from 10 departments, Moharana said. The private bus, on its way to Cuttack from Talcher, crashed into the railing of the bridge near Jagatpur and plunged 30 feet down into the dry riverbed of the Mahanadi. Gaja: CM to seek relief from Centre, TN releases Rs 1,000 Cr

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami will brief Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday about the devastation caused by the cyclonic storm 'Gaja' and seek a comprehensive central assistance package to tide over the situation. The Tamil Nadu government, meanwhile, released Rs 1,000 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund to the cyclone affected districts to carry out relief and rehabilitation measures which includes solatium to the kin of dead, damage for crops, trees and houses. Woman injured at Chennai airport as footpath caves in

A woman passenger, aged around 50, sustained minor injuries at the airport here Wednesday after a footpath caved in. The passenger was coming out of the airport complex when the incident took place, officials said. It may be noted that several passengers have reportedly got injured in the past owing to alleged shoddy maintenance of the airport. Two years ago, the National Human Rights Commission had issued notice to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Airports Authority of India based on a complaint that the airport, despite being modernised in 2012, had in recent times witnessed 61 incidents of glass falling and endangering the safety of travellers.

Magisterial probe report on Amritsar train tragedy submitted

A 300-page, magisterial probe report on the Amritsar train accident in which about 60 people died last month was submitted to the Punjab Home Secretary Wednesday. Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner B Purushartha, who was appointed special executive magistrate by the government to probe the October 19 accident, said the report was submitted to Punjab Home Secretary N S Kalsi. The report had statements of over 150 people. They included railway officials and Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who was the chief guest at the Dussehra event, held close to the railway tracks in Amritsar. The report would now be examined by the Home Department, a senior official said. Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had questioned the Railways for giving a clean chit to the train driver, too had submitted his statement in writing. Death toll in Cuttack mishap is 10, not 12: Police

Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty on Wednesday clarified that 10 passengers were killed after a bus crashed into the railing of Mahanadi bridge near Jagatpur on the outskirts of Cuttack city on Tuesday evening, and not 12 as reported earlier."There were some statements from the authorities about the death toll to be 12, but the actual death toll is 10. All the injured were admitted in casualty and at the same time in another accident, two persons were also brought to the hospital casualty in another ambulance due to which the counting of death was declared 12. Ro-Ro ferry vessel stuck mid-sea, towed to safety by tugboats

The Ro-Ro ferry vessel, which started transporting people and vehicles between Ghogha in Saurashtra and Dahej in south Gujarat last month, came to a standstill mid sea due to engine trouble on Wednesday afternoon, officials said. The vessel, which was carrying over 400 passengers and over 100 vehicles at the time of the incident, was safely towed to Ghogha port by tugboats, a government official said. "The Korean-made ship called 'Voyage Symphony' remained stationed in the Gulf of Cambay for around one hour before it was towed to Ghogha port by tugboats," said chairman-managing director of Indigo Seaways Pvt Ltd (ISPL), Chetan Contractor. ISPL, a Surat-based ferry operator, and the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) had entered into an agreement to run the Roll On-Roll Off (Ro-Ro) ferry service on the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. Court awards over Rs 33 lakh compensation to accident victim's family

A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here has awarded over Rs 33 lakh to the family of a 32-year-old man who died after falling from a running bus whose rear gate was left open by the driver. The tribunal's Presiding Officer Pawan Kumar Jain asked National Insurance Company Limited, the insurer of the offending bus, to pay Rs 33,30,631 to the wife, two sons and aged parents of victim Prem Chandra Giri. The accident happened on November 4, 2015 and the victim was the sole bread winner of the family. According to Giri's wife, he fell off the running bus near Iron Yamuna bridge bus stand, as the rear gate of the bus was left open by the driver even after repeated requests of the conductor. The tribunal noted that the accident had happened due to the driver's negligence as Giri's falling from a moving bus shows that it was being driven at an excessive speed and it was also negligent on the part of the driver to have kept the rear gate open while driving. One killed, 7 injured in bus accident in UP

One person was killed and seven others were injured when two buses collided on the Lucknow-Gorakhpur highway here due to dense fog, police said Wednesday. The accident took place at about 2 am in the Khorbar area due to dense fog. A bus hit the rear side of another, they said. Most of the passengers were sleeping at the time of the accident. Villagers rushed to the accident spot after hearing a loud noise and informed police. Police rushed the injured people to a hospital and sent the body of a driver of one of the buses for postmortem.

Second death in French protests over fuel tax hikes

A second person has died in France amid nationwide protests against fuel tax hikes that saw hundreds injured and key roads paralysed by demonstrations. The French Interior Ministry sent its "sincere condolences" in a Wednesday statement to the family and friends of a motorcyclist killed in an accident near a dam Monday in the southeastern Drome region. The ministry did not give details about how he was killed. A protester was killed in a road accident Saturday as more than a quarter million French drivers blocked roads. BJP team to visit cyclone-hit districts of TN

: A team from the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party would visit the cyclone Gaja-affected districts of the State on Thursday to assess the damage caused, the party said Wednesday.
