Cyclone Gaja: TN CM releases Rs 1,000 crore for relief, restoration work

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday releases Rs 1,000 crore for relief and restoration works being undertaken in the areas affected by cyclone Gaja in the state.The Chief Minister will distribute the financial assistance to farmers, coconut growers and others in person on Tuesday, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) announced through his Twitter handle.Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president MK Stalin has also announced Rs one crore financial assistance for the relief and rehabilitation work in cyclone Gaja hit areas in eight districts of the state.He also declared that his party members of the Rajya Sabha and Legislative Assembly will donate their one month's salary for the relief and rehabilitation works. Day 4 after cyclone, relief works stepped up in TN; CM

Relief operations gathered pace in cyclone 'Gaja'-hit districts of Tamil Nadu Monday even as sporadic protests by the affected people demanding quick assistance continued in various places for the second day. Chief Minister K Palaniswami took stock of the situation at a high-level meeting here and announced an immediate cash assistance totalling Rs 8,800 to each families sheltered in relief camps besides, 10 kg rice and four litres of kerosene. He also said compensation would be given to farmers and fishermen and directed allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for immediate relief and rehabilitation works. In a statement later, Palaniswami said the toll in the cyclone has risen to 46, while a total of 2, 51,674 people were staying in relief camps. 250 people, 82 vehicles stuck in Zojila pass after heavy snowfall evacuated

The Jammu and Kashmir government Monday evacuated over 250 people and 80 vehicles stuck in Zojila pass on Srinagar-Leh National Highway after a fresh spell of heavy snowfall. The government managed to evacuate all the vehicles and passengers after a massive rescue operation launched at wee hours on Monday. Officials said rescue teams of state police assisted by the personnel of the Border Roads Organisation's premier wing BEACON, having the responsibility of developing road network in the entire state and known and life line of J&K. The rescue operation started at 2.30 am, a J&K police spokesperson said. After strenuous efforts, the rescue teams managed to safely evacuate all the 250 stranded passengers and 82 vehicles which included 70 trucks, four buses and eight light motor vehicles, he said. Chinese fishing boat sinks off Japan's coast; 5 crew missing

The Japanese coast guard says a Chinese fishing boat sank off Japan's southern coast and five of its crew members are missing. Three others were rescued. The coast guard said it received a distress call Monday and was later informed that the boat sank about 370 kilometres west of Japan's Amami Oshima island. The coast guard dispatched a patrol aircraft to the area but saw no sign of the vessel. It said three crew members were rescued by another fishing boat, and that other ships in the area were searching for the five missing fishermen. Japanese officials they sent a patrol boat to help with the rescue. The cause of the accident was being investigated.

Amritsar train accident: magisterial probe report to be submitted Tuesday

The magisterial probe ordered by Punjab government into the Amritsar train accident in which 60 people died has recorded statements of more than 150 people, including railway officials and Navjot Kaur Sidhu, the chief guest at the Dussehra event. "The report is complete and it will be submitted on Tuesday to the Punjab Home Secretary N S Kalsi," said Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner B Purushartha, who was appointed special executive magistrate by the government to probe the October 19 accident. He said statements of more than 150 people including railway officials and eyewitnesses were recorded. Statements of Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, and the Dussehra event organiser Saurabh Madan were also recorded. BSF officer killed, 3 injured in blast in J&K's Samba district

A BSF assistant commandant was killed and three others were injured in a blast at a border outpost (BOP) along the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district on Monday, an officer said. "A blast has taken place at a BOP in Samba sector. One BSF person has died and few others (were) injured," he told PTI. An assistant commandant was killed and three jawans were injured in the blast in Mangu Chak, said Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Arun Manhas, adding that an investigation was on. A Border Security Force (BSF) officer said it was not known yet whether the blast was caused due to some accident or it was a mortar fire from the Pakistan side.

Guj to get highway airstrip for emergency landing: Mandaviya

Construction of an airstrip for emergency landing between Datrana and Jawanpar villages on Limbdi-Khambhaliya national highway near Dwarka has started, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said Monday. The Minister of state for Road Transport and Highways said there were plans to set up 11 such emergency landing airstrips on national highways across seven states for timely relief during natural disasters or any such untoward event. "A five kilometre stretch between Datrana and Jawanpur villages on Limbdi-Khambhaliya national highway near Dwarka is being developed as an emergency landing airstrip. The project is a part of the construction of 11 such airstrips identified by the Defence ministry, Indian Air Force and the Roads and Transport ministry," he informed reporters Monday in Gandhinagar. Mughal road reopens for traffic after week-long closure due to snowfall

The Mughal road connecting the Poonch and Rajouri districts in Jammu region with South Kashmir's Shopian district was opened for restricted vehicular traffic on Monday after a week-long closure due to heavy snowfall, a senior traffic police official said. Only a limited number of light vehicles were allowed to move on Mughal road Monday from both sides on a trial basis after completion of snow clearance operation Sunday evening, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Mohammad Rafiq said. He said the slippery conditions on the road in the morning forced further delay in the resumption of the traffic. The traffic on the road was allowed for a limited period today, he said. Karnataka floods: Centre approves Rs 546 crore to state

The Centre Monday approved over Rs 546 crore as additional assistance to Karnataka, a large part of which was hit by floods and landslides this year. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the high-level committee chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh and attended by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh besides others, an official statement said. The committee has approved the additional assistance of Rs. 546.21 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to Karnataka, it said. The fund has been approved following a report of an inter-ministerial team that visited areas hit by the floods and landslides in Karnataka including Kodagu district, the country's largest coffee-growing region. The floods and landslides hit Karnataka in August. Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and senior officers of the ministries of home, finance and agriculture and NITI Aayog were present at the meeting.

4 dead, 1 injured in factory fire at Karol Bagh

Four people lost their lives while one person was injured after a massive fire broke out at a factory here in Karol Bagh on Monday.The fire broke out at 12:23 pm in Karol Bagh's Beadonpura area. Red alert after Guatemala volcano erupts again, 200 flee

Guatemalan authorities on Monday declared a red alert after the Fuego volcano erupted again, forcing about 200 residents to flee. A fiery glow rose from the crater of Fuego which is erupting for the fifth time this year, one month after the last one and following a June 3 rain of rocks, ash and toxic gases that left almost 200 people dead and 235 missing. Former J&K chief secy Mohammad Iqbal Khanday passes away

Former chief secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Mohammad Iqbal Khanday passed away here Monday after battling cancer. He was 63. Khanday, a 1978-batch IAS officer, took premature retirement from service just few months before his superannuation in 2015. He is survived by wife, judge Kaneez Fatima, and daughter Sehar Iqbal. Khanday breathed his last at SKIMS Hospital at Soura, where he was undergoing treatment for cancer, which had relapsed after his retirement from service. Khanday will be buried at a graveyard near his Humhama residence, relatives said. Known as an able administrator, Khanday was dogged by several controversies during his years of service -- the last one being his premature retirement due to differences with the PDP-BJP government over transfer of few subordinate officers. Four people laundering clothes killed in central Delhi fire

Four people were killed Monday in a fire incident at a factory in central Delhi after one of them, a heavy built man, got stuck at the exit door while escaping the building and blocked the route for others, firefighters said. Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials said the fire started at 12.23 pm in Beadonpura area in Karol Bagh after a solvent used for laundering clothes spilled out on the floor accidentally. The DFS had received a call that a fire has broken out at a house but when firefighters reached the spot, they found the victims were involved in laundering clothes, said an official. He said the victims were about to steam iron clothes and were putting solvent in a container when it spilled on the floor and came in contact with the steam iron triggering the fire.
