14 people injured as bus falls in ditch in UP

At least 14 persons were injured when a private bus overturned and fell into a wayside ditch at Bazardeeh here on Gorakhpur-Sonauli road, police said Saturday. According to Additional Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Shukla, the accident took place Friday night, in which three passengers sustained critical injuries. They were referred to BRD Medical College Gorakhpur. The bus was on way to Gorakhpur from Sonauli when the accident took place, police said.

Avalanche hits Nepal peak; 5 South Koreans among 9 killed

At least nine climbers including five South Korean nationals have been killed in an avalanche which devastated their camp on Nepal's Mount Gurja, the expedition organiser said Saturday. The violent snowstorm buried the climbers at the base camp at an altitude of 3,500 metres near the south face of Mount Dhaulagiri in western Nepal on Friday evening, said Wangchu Sherpa, the Managing Director at Trekking Camp Nepal. Five South Korean climbers including team leader Kim Chang-ho along with their Nepali support staff were killed in the incident, Sherpa said. They had gone to scale the mountain from Gurja Village on October 7. A heavy snowstorm followed by a landslide buried the base camp at an altitude of 3,500 metres when the climbers were awaiting for a fair weather to move towards higher camps, he said. The death toll from Hurricane Michael rose to at least 16 on Friday amid fears it would continue to climb as search-and-rescue teams scour the debris of the Florida town that bore the brunt of the monster storm. Cyclone Titli: Railways to run Bhubaneswar-Bangalore special train

At least 41 dead in Uganda landslide

At least 41 people were killed after a river in eastern Uganda burst its banks, sending a torrent of mud and rocks barrelling into homes, disaster officials and survivors have said. Rescue teams continued picking through the rubble late Friday, searching for survivors and victims of the disaster which took place the previous day in the eastern Bududa district. An unknown number of people remained missing. At least 34 killed in Uganda landslides

At least 34 people lost their lives after landslides and floods, triggered by torrential rains, washed away houses in eastern Uganda, the country's Red Cross Society said.Dozens are feared missing in mudslides that engulfed homes in six villages in Bududa district, that borders Kenya. Grim search underway for victims of Hurricane

Rescue teams using sniffer dogs carried out a grim search for victims of Hurricane Michael on Friday amid fears that the death toll from the monster storm -- which currently stands at 11 -- could rise. Cyclone Titli: Odisha expedites rescue, relief operations

The Odisha government on Friday stepped up rescue and relief operation in areas affected by deluge areas caused due to heavy rainfall under the influence of Cyclone Titli, officials said. As many as 1,27,262 people were sheltered in 963 relief centres on Friday, while the NDRF and Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) have been deployed to speed up rescue and relief operations, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) B P Sethi said. Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Puri, Kandhamal and Kendrapara districts have been affected by floods, he said, adding Ganjam has been categorised as the "worst-affected". The calamities have, till now, claimed three lives - all in Ganjam district. "Two helicopters requisitioned from the Indian Navy have already reached Gopalpur. The number of climate-related disasters around the world is growing rapidly, humanitarians warned Friday, urging more efforts to prepare and build resilience to looming changes on a warming planet. One killed, three injured in separate accidents in Amethi

A person was killed and three others, including a minor, were injured in separate road accidents here on Friday, police said. Noor Mohammad (29) of Bazar Shukul was killed on the spot when his motorcycle was hit by a tractor near Nihalpur morh on Raebareli-Faizabad National Highway. The driver of the tractor fled from the spot, leaving behind his vehicle which was impounded by the police. In another accident, three persons, including a minor, sustained serious injuries when their motorcycle was hit by a speeding truck near Pure Ben Morh on Gauriganj-Musafirkhana road, the police said. 12 farmers fined for burning crop residue in Haryana's Hisar

Twelve farmers have been fined for burning crop residue in Haryana's Hisar district, an official statement said Friday. The Haryana State Pollution Control Board has got a case registered against one farmer and recovered Rs 45,000 as fine from 12 farmers for burning crop residue in Hisar, it said. Burning of crop residue is not allowed in Haryana as it leads to environmental pollution. Last year, 122 cases were registered against those found burning crop residue during the paddy season, the statement said. The Haryana Space Applications Centre in Haryana's Agricultural University campus in Hisar has been monitoring the entire state through satellite imagery, it said.
