A possible train mishap was averted as an alert driver stopped the train as it was approaching damaged rails after spotting red flag on the tracks near Cuttack today, a railway official said. Nobody was hurt as the driver of the MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train from Cuttack to Berhampur saw the red flag and halted the train, an East Coast Railway (ECoR) official said. The train was allowed to pass the site at slow speed after about 40 minutes and train traffic is now normal on the busy route, the official said. A work for construction of foot over bridge was under progress at Gopalpur-Balikuda this afternoon. Maharashtra Governor and Chancellor of state universities Ch Vidyasagar Rao today asked vice chancellors of all universities in the state to extend monetary and material support to flood-ravaged Kerala. Maharashtra has 20 universities with student strength of 2.3 million. "The Governor has asked the universities and colleges to raise funds and also extend necessary support to Kerala in its relief and rehabilitation effort," a Raj Bhavan spokesperson said. Secretary to the Governor B. The Army would continue to be engaged in the rescue operations in flood-hit Kerala till the situation stabilised, Southern Command chief Lt Gen D R Soni said here today. He also said the Army's medical teams would extend the first line of relief in co-ordination with the government. "There are inaccessible areas and our men will continue to reach out to people who needed to be rescued," he told reporters here. Noting that it was not possible to provide the exact number of people stranded, he said the rescue operations by the Army had not been called off. He was replying to a question on the number of people still stranded in the state, ravaged by floods. At a point of time, the army personnel had to return to the barracks, but "We are not in a hurry to do so until things stabilise," he said. Insurance regulator Irda today asked insurers for immediate registration and settlement of eligible claims in the flood affected districts of Karnataka, including Kodagu. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irda) had last week asked insurers to set up special camps and make immediate payments against insurance claims in flood-ravaged Kerala. "As you are aware, the recent floods have caused immense loss to life and property in certain districts of Karnataka State, including Kodagu. "There is an urgent need for us to take immediate steps to mitigate the hardships of the affected insured population of the State by ensuring immediate registration and settlement of eligible claims," it said in a circular to non-life insurance companies. The Centre dispatched today 100 metric tonnes of pulses, 52 metric tonnes emergency medicines to Kerala besides ensuring supply of 2,600 MW power to the state, which was hit by a massive floods that claimed 216 lives so far.
