Assam to give Rs 3 cr to Kerala for flood relief

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said his state would give Rs 3 crore aid to rain-ravaged Kerala, where 210 have died in the last 10 days. "The Government of Assam would extend financial aid of Rs 3 crore to Kerala government in view of the devastating flood in the southern state," an official release said quoting the chief minister. Sonowal also directed the state Revenue and Disaster Management Department to open helplines to expedite the process of providing relief and rescuing people of Assam stranded in Kerala, it said. Accordingly, the department opened two helpline numbers and a control room. The helpline numbers are 0361-2237219 and 0361-2237460, while the control room can be reached at 9401044617. The number of those displaced in the torrential rains in Kerala was today put at 7.24 lakh by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who also said most of the affected had been rescued and the government's focus would now be their rehabilitation.

Three years after man's death,his son is born to surrogate mom

Exactly three years after she lost her husband in a road accident, a woman clutched his newborn to her bosom in a Mumbai hospital, thanks to modern technology and her determination to become a parent. The baby boy came into the world through a surrogate mother, after the woman couldn't conceive despite undergoing multiple in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) cycles, said a doctor who treated her. The woman, who hailed from Bengaluru, had lost her husband in a road accident in August 2015. The woman, now in her early 30, was married to him for five years but could not conceive and had just started the IVF procedure when the tragedy struck. "Within few days of the IVF procedure, her husband died in the road accident, which left her devastated," the doctor said today. However, the woman decided to undergo the procedure. 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia's Lombok

An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 on Richter scale rocked the island of Lombok, Indonesia on Sunday.The earthquake was centred in the northeast of the island at a depth of 20km, reported a local daily. Fresh 6.9-magnitude quake rocks Indonesia's Lombok island

Multiple earthquakes -- including a powerful and shallow 6.9-magnitude tremor -- struck Indonesia's Lombok today, sending fresh panic coursing through the already battered island. Three significant quakes were recorded by seismologists today, the first a 6.3 shortly before midday which triggered landslides and sent people fleeing for cover. It was followed nearly twelve hours later by a late evening quake measuring 6.9 and an aftershock soon after of 5.9 strength according to the US Geological Survey. The picturesque island is already reeling from two devastating quakes on July 29 and August 5 that killed nearly 500 people and made hundreds of thousands homeless. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the late evening quakes on an island where many have chosen to sleep in tents in recent weeks because of regular aftershocks. Roy to donate Rs 1 lakh to Kerala CM Relief Fund

Kerala floods: NCMC asks to focus on food, medicine supply

As the massive floods have wreaked havoc in Kerala, the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) on Sunday directed the central ministries to focus on provision of emergency supplies of food, water, medicines and restoration of essential services in the southern state.NCMC met for the fourth time today in last four day to coordinate rescue and relief operations among the Defence Forces, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and other Central Ministries and Kerala Government.Thousands of personnel of Indian Navy, Air Force, Army, NDRF and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) are engaged in the rescue and relief operations, which is in full swing in Kerala.Till now, 38,000 people have been rescued and evacuated from the flood-affected areas. Desist from making food fortification compulsory: SJM to FSSAI

The RSS-affiliated Swadeshi Jagran Manch said today that food safety regulator FSSAI should desist from making food fortification mandatory of packaged food as it will favour only few selected multi-national firms. The FSSAI is making efforts to make it mandatory that all packaged food should be fortified by Vitamin A and D. It will only help the cartel of international Vitamin companies, SJM co-convener Ashwani Mahajan said. In place of focusing the fundamental duty as per the FSSAI Act, the authority was now more keen to please the donors and sponsors of their activities which are not directed towards the mandate of the law, he further said. The SJM alleged that FSSAI is allowing flooding of unauthorised and banned food products in the country.

Death toll in Kerala mounts to 210, 3.5k rescued in Karnataka

The deadly monsoon rains that savaged Kerala claimed 13 more lives today, taking the toll to 210 in the last ten days as parts of neighbouring Karnataka and Tamil Nadu too reeled under floods. More than 3,500 people have been rescued till today in Kodagu district of Karanataka, where six people lost their lives in floods and landslides in the past few days, while major rivers, including Cauvery, were in spate in Tamil Nadu, inundating low-lying areas along the banks. In Kerala, which bore the brunt of the south west monsoon fury, the number of those displaced in the torrential rains was today put at 7.24 lakh by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who also said most of the affected had been rescued and the government's focus would now be their rehabilitation. A strong earthquake rocked Indonesia's Lombok today, two weeks after a quake killed more than 480 people on the island and hours after another tremor triggered landslides, damaged buildings and sent people fleeing and The 6.9 magnitude quake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 20 kilometres and about five kilometres south of Belanting town in East Lombok, according to the US Geological Survey. Two women killed, three injured in lightning strike

Two women were killed and three others injured when lightning struck them in Odisha's Bargarh district today, police said. The women were working in the paddy field when lightning struck them, killing two on the spot and causing burn injuries to three others, police said. The injured were rushed to Attabira hospital and later shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) at Burla, they said. The deceased were identified as Mini Mirdha and Subalaya Mirdha, police added.

6.33 lakh people in relief camps in Kerala; Centre puts focus on food, medicine, fuel

With over 6.33 lakh people taking shelter in 3,000 relief camps, the government today directed the central ministries to focus on providing essential commodities and medicine and restoration of vital services in flood-hit Kerala. The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) in its review meeting directed that focus should now be on provision of emergency supplies of food, water, medicines and restoration of essential services such as power, fuel, telecom and transport links as flood water recedes in Kerala, an official spokesperson said. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said atotal of 6,33,010 people are staying in 2,971 relief camps in Kerala and around 38,000 flood affected people have also been rescued by different agencies so far.
