26 people killed in dust storms, lightning strikes in UP

As many as 26 people were killed due to dust storms and lightning strikes in Uttar Pradesh, an official spokesman said today. Dust storms and lightning hit places in 11 districts of the state last night resulting in the death of 26 people, he said. While five deaths each were reported from Jaunpur and Sultanpur, four died in Unnao, three each died in Chandauli and Bahraich, two in Rae Bareli and one each in Mirzapur, Sitapur, Amethi and Pratapgarh, the spokesman said. Kannauj district was also affected by a dust storm but no casualty was reported from there, he said. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the district magistrates of the affected areas to immediately provide compensation to families of those killed and said no laxity will be tolerated. Expressing grief over the deaths, he said the state government will extend all possible help to those hit by dust storms and related incidents, according to the spokesman. Dust storm affects Delhi metro services on Blue, Red Line

Services on the Red Line and Blue Line of the Delhi Metro were affected briefly due to some snags on a few stretches after a dust storm, with winds gusting up to 70 kmph, hit the national capital this evening, officials said. "Due to sudden dust storm and rain around 5 pm, there were a few cases of track circuit signalling drop reported on Line 1 (Red Line) and Line 3 (Blue Line) and external object striking overhead electrification near Janakpuri East," a senior DMRC official said. "This had no major impact on overall services, except minor regulation of trains on affected stretches. Trains on all lines are running normal otherwise," he said. Red Line connects Dilshad Garden in east Delhi and Rithala in the western part of the city. Blue Line spans from Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida City Centre. Both are two of the longests and busiest routes on the metro network. The dust storm accompanied with light rain pushed the temperature in Delhi down by a few notches on what was a sultry day.

2 killed in rain-related incidents in Maha; dust storm, rain bring respite in North

Two persons were today killed in rain-related incidents in Maharashtra's Thane district, while a dust storm hit the national capital and its surrounding areas that had been reeling under the scorching heat for a few days. Heavy rains lashed Mumbai, causing a slight delay in the movement of trains. Monsoon arrives in Mumbai; heavy rains delay running of suburban trains

The metropolis received heavy rainfall today following the onset of the southwest monsoon, leading to a slight delay in the running of suburban trains. "Heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded in the suburbs till 8.30 am," IMD Deputy Director K S Hosalikar said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today declared the onset of the monsoon over Mumbai, the adjoining Thane-Konkan areas, Ahmednagar, Parbhani and other parts of Maharashtra. Meanwhile, trains in the suburban section of the Central Railway were running late by 10 to 12 minutes due to the downpour, but there was no cancellation of trains, an official said. "A wall fell on the tracks of down slow line this morning. The debris was removed immediately and for some time, trains on the down slow line were diverted to the fast line," Sunil Udasi, Chief PRO of Central Railway said, adding this happened during non-peak hours in early morning. Kumaoni singer Pappu Karki killed in road accident

Popular Kumaoni folk singer Pappu Karki and two persons were killed early today when their car turned turtle on Herakhan Road, around 40 km from here. The incident occurred around 5 am when they were returning from a programme at Okhalkanda. While three persons, Pappu Karki (34), Rajendra Gonia (26) and Pushkar Gonia (25), died on the spot, two other occupants of the car were injured, Nainital SSP Janmejay Khanduri said. The injured have been admitted to a hospital in Haldwani, he said. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat condoled the deaths and commiserated with the families of the deceased. He said it was a sad day for Uttarakhand which lost one of its gems in the accident. Karki was famous for singing Kumaoni folk. 5 killed, 6 injured in lightning strikes in Sultanpur

Five people were killed and six others sustained serious burns in separate incidents of lightning strike in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur district last night, police said. Three children, Suraj (12), Ajit (15) and Ravindra (14) were playing in the open in Amdeva village under the Jaisingh Kotwali police station when lightning struck them, killing them on the spot, the police said. A youth present with them sustained serious injuries and was referred to the district hospital, they added. In Domapur village, a woman, Manbhavti (42), was killed and two people were injured in lightning strike, the police said. In a separate incident, a woman, Shobhavati (55), was killed and three others injured in Bani village after being struck by lightning, they said. The four had sought shelter under a thatched roof amid sudden showers. Lightning kills man, woman dead in road accident in Thane

At least two persons were today killed in rain-related incidents in Maharashtra's Thane district, officials said. Fisherman Steni Admani (66) was struck by lightning, and died on the spot, when he was examining his fishing net at around 6am today, said Shivaji Patil, chief of the District Disaster Control Cell. Six others, who were out in the open at the time, were also injured due to the lightning and have been admitted to a local hospital, he added. The incident took place at Patanbunder area of Uttan in Bhayander in the district, he informed. In another incident, a woman who was riding pillion on a two-wheeler died after the vehicle rammed into a truck on GB Road and an official said that heavy rains probably caused the accident. The woman has not been identified yet and the man riding the two-wheeler was severely injured and has been admitted to the city civil hospital, the official added. Part of Mumbai building collapses after blaze; 2 firemen hurt

A major fire broke out in an old building in South Mumbai early today and a part of it collapsed, injuring two fire brigade personnel, an official said. The fire brigade personnel were injured when a portion of the building, called Kothari building (also known as the Light Of Asia), collapsed during the fire-fighting operation, he said. The fire in the ground-plus-five-storey building, which was unoccupied for the past nearly five years, started at around 4 am, the official from the fire department said. The structure in the Fort area, a major business district, is old and its southern part collapsed when fire brigade personnel were putting out the blaze, he said. The official said the injured firemen - Suhas Mane and Sudhir Deolekar - were undergoing treatment at the trauma care ward of the civic-run Nair Hospital, where their condition was stated to be stable. Mane sustained injuries in his left hand and leg, while Deolekar suffered wounds to his head, neck and legs. They got stuck .

35 injured after fire breaks out in Surat building

Mumbai fire: Situation under control

The fire that broke out in Patel Chambers here on Saturday is under control, Chief Fire Officer said."Two firefighters had minor injuries, rest everybody is safe. We deployed 16 fire engines, 11 tankers and 150 fire officers. The situation is under control," fire officer Prabhat Rahangdale told media here.However, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained."This building has been vacant for around four years.
