Rescuers searching today for seven people missing after a dam containing mineral tailings burst at a mine in the northern Mexican border state of Chihuahua found one body that was not yet identified, state officials said. Some 150 people joined the search over a 7-mile course through the mountains where the contaminated water rushed after the dam broke yesterday at the Rio Tinto mine complex, the state government said in a statement. In addition to those missing, two people were reported hospitalized in stable condition. Gov Javier Corral visited the site today and said the state's priorities were finding the missing and protecting the Tubares river at the bottom of the watershed. State officials said they were awaiting the arrival of federal environmental officials to evaluate the impact. A pilot and a passenger safely ejected before their single-engine turboprop crashed during a test flight in Southern California's Mojave Desert, a spokesman for the plane's developer said. Both occupants are OK after successfully deploying their parachutes before the GA10 aircraft crashed about 24 kilometers west of Edwards Air Force Base, according to Earle Boyter, a North American official of Australia's GippsAero. The 10-seat experimental utility plane was likely destroyed, Boyter said. It had taken off from Mojave Air and Space Port, about 85 miles (136 kilometers) north of downtown Los Angeles. A Federal Aviation Administration inspector was dispatched to the crash site, said agency spokesman Ian Gregor. The National Transportation Safety Board will also investigate. A sculpture on the tower of the over 1000-year-old Sri Braghadeeswarar temple here suffered minor damage in a lightning strike today, officials said. The sculpture of 'yazhi', a mythical animal, was damaged slightly and can be set right, they said. The lightning struck the sculpture despite the installation of an arrester, they added. The tower of the temple, built by Chola King Raja Raja between 985 AD and 1013 AD, had been constructed in a such a way that its shadow would never fall on the ground.

An Army vehicle was damaged in an IED explosion by militants today in Sopore area of Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, an official said. No casualties were reported. The militants triggered an IED explosion at Yemberzal Wari in Sopore area while an Army vehicle was passing through the area, he said.

A skywalk connecting the New Delhi Railway Station with two metro lines, decongesting the Ajmeri Gate side of the station, will be completed within the next six months, the Northern Railways said today. New Delhi Railway Station handles more than four lakh passengers per day and the Ajmeri Gate side entry is the convergence hub of the Airport Metro, Yellow Line Metro and the DTC bus stop and therefore, the preferred entry for passengers. "At present, passengers arriving by metro and public buses have to walk through the vehicular traffic to reach the station building. To resolve this problem and to facilitate the smooth movement of passengers, a skywalk is being constructed duly equipped with escalators and stairs. The Bombay High Court today sought to know why the Maharashtra government was reluctant to implement a central Act that provides for regulation of nursing homes and hospitals. A division bench of justices N H Patil and G S Kulkarni made the observation while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Pune resident Atul Bhosale. The PIL raised the issue of "poor" condition of hospitals and nursing homes in Maharashtra and "pathetic" state of affairs of medical care in the state. The petition maintained the Centre in 2010 enacted a legislation, the Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, to provide for registration and regulation of all clinical facilities in the country. "The Act prescribes the minimum standards of facilities and services to be provided by such establishments," the petition said. The Air Force today rescued three Israeli nationals after their vehicle fell down a gorge on the way to Rohtang pass in Himachal Pradesh and one of them later succumbed to injuries. All three were evacuated in an MK III chopper from Kullu to Chandigarh, along with an Israeli embassy official and a medical officer, a statement by the Air Force said. One of the rescued Israelis succumbed to his injuries, the statement said. "The Himalayan Dragons' based at Air Force Station Sarsawa were tasked to undertake a challenging casualty evacuation of three Israeli nationals whose vehicle had fallen down in a gorge on the way to Rohtang Pass," the statement said.
At least 11 people were killed and 25 others trapped today when a truck carrying explosives blew up at a construction site of an an iron ore project in China's northeastern Liaoning Province. The accident occurred at about 4:10 pm in Nanfen district in Benxi, a prefecture-level city. The injured have been taken to a nearby hospital, state television CCTV reported. At least 11 people were killed and 25 others trapped at the construction site when a truck carrying explosives blew up, the report said. The rescuers are in contact with some of the trapped miners and rescue efforts are underway, the report said. Though the number of deaths has reduced at mines in recent years, mining accidents are common in China. In May, a methane gas explosion ripped through a coal mine in central China's Hunan province, killing at least five workers. The southwest monsoon is likely to arrive in Mumbai, Goa and parts of Maharashtra by June 7, bringing in its wake heavy rains, the weather office said today. "Our forecast for the next 48 hours says that the monsoon will reach southern Konkan, Goa and Mumbai by June 7 and then move towards northern parts of Maharashtra," said an official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here. "After the onset of the monsoon, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in the areas in the next 24 hours - that is from June 8," he said. A warning would be issued for fishermen, asking them not to venture deep inside the Arabian Sea, the official said. In the last few days, the metropolis has been lashed by pre-monsoon showers. The Calcutta High Court today granted anticipatory bail to BJP leader and former railways minister Mukul Roy on a bond of Rs 50,000 in connection with a complaint over the death of his "mentor" Mrinal Kanti Singha Roy in 2015. A division bench comprising Justices Joymalyo Bagchi and R K Kapur directed Roy to meet the investigating officer at Bijpur police station in North 24 Parganas district once a fornight, apart from furnishing Rs 50,000 bail bond as conditions for granting anticipatory bail to him. Roy, who was a senior Trinamool Congress leader before joining the BJP in November last year, was also directed by the court to cooperate with the investigation by the state police. The court had in January directed the police not to arrest Roy during the pendancy of his anticipatory bail application. A 4.9-magnitude earthquake today jolted western Nepal, causing panic among the residents. The quake that hit Bajura district situated in far-west Nepal was 4.9-magnitude with its epicentre at a forest area on the border of Bajura and Humla districts, according to National Seismological Centre. This was not an aftershock of 2015 earthquake but a fresh tremor, said an official at the centre. No casualties and damage have been reported so far. However, many people rushed out to the streets after the earthquake. Earlier on June 1, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake was felt with epicenter at Dolakha district of eastern Nepal. In 2015, a major earthquake occurred in Nepal that claimed 9,000 lives.
Seven members of a family were killed and nine others injured in an accident on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway today when the driver of their pick-up van fell asleep at the wheel, police said. The accident took place in Haryana's Palwal district when the family was on its way from Mohali to Mathura, Superintendent of Police (SP), Palwal, Waseem Akram said. There was negligence on part of the driver, he said. The driver was feeling sleepy and as he continued to drive, he fell asleep at the wheel, the SP added. The driver, who survived, told the police that the accident took place at 4:30 am and a container truck could have hit the van. Passengers sitting in the rear portion of the car were killed. The injured are undergoing treatment at hospitals in Delhi, Mathura and Palwal.
At least 11 people, including six women, were killed and 19 injured when the bus they were travelling in fell into a 500-metre-deep gorge in Mizoram's Lunglei district today, police said. The private bus was being driven by the handyman (helper) as the driver was asleep when the accident took place early morning near Pangzawl village, they said. The bus was on its way from state capital Aizawl to its southernmost Siaha district, they added. Initial reports suggested that nine passengers had died in the accident while, six were admitted to the Serchhip hospital in a critical condition, police said. Later, two passengers succumbed to their injuries raising the death toll to 11, they added. The remaining injured passengers are undergoing treatment at the Pangzawl primary health centre and the Haahthial community health centre, they said.
