Lava oozing out of cracks for two weeks in rural Hawaii neighborhoods took on new characteristics as fresher magma mixed with decades-old magma, sending a flow toward the ocean today. Since a first fissure opened up in a community on May 3, lava was mostly spattering up and collecting at the edges of the cracks in the ground. Two neighborhoods with nearly 2,000 people were forced to evacuate as lava claimed 40 structures. On Friday afternoon, the lava changed dramatically with one fissure ramping up and sending a flow across a road, destroying four more homes and isolating residents, some of whom had to be air-lifted to safety. The change is attributed to new magma mixing with 1955-era magma in the ground, creating hotter and more fluid flows, scientists said. Authorities say an explosion and fire at a chemical plant near Houston injured 20 people and left one missing. Television station KHOU reports that the blast happened this morning at the Kuraray America Eval factory in Pasadena. The local fire marshal says 20 people were hurt and one is missing. The extent of the injuries isn't known. The fire has gone out. According to the company's website, the plant specializes in making chemicals, fiber and resin.

Three people, including a woman, were injured today when a Mathura Junction-bound rail-bus hit a car at an unmanned railway crossing here. The accident took place near Govind Nagar here. While two injured perosns have been discharged, the woman is being treated at a hospital, a PROof Nayati hospital said. The driver of the rail-bus coming from Vrindaban has been arrested for negligence of duty, a Railway Protection Force official said. A Mexican pilot who once flew the leased passenger plane that crashed in Cuba, killing 107 people on board, said today he had previously complained about alleged sub-standard practices by the aircraft's owner.
