Cuban officials said they have found one of the two black boxes from a plane that crashed near Havana airport, killing more than 100 people, in "good condition".

Hawaii lava flow ramps up as new magma mixes with old
Lava oozing out of cracks for two weeks in rural Hawaii neighborhoods took on new characteristics as fresher magma mixed with decades-old magma, sending a flow toward the ocean today. Since a first fissure opened up in a community on May 3, lava was mostly spattering up and collecting at the edges of the cracks in the ground. Two neighborhoods with nearly 2,000 people were forced to evacuate as lava claimed 40 structures. On Friday afternoon, the lava changed dramatically with one fissure ramping up and sending a flow across a road, destroying four more homes and isolating residents, some of whom had to be air-lifted to safety. The change is attributed to new magma mixing with 1955-era magma in the ground, creating hotter and more fluid flows, scientists said. "There's much more stuff coming out of the ground and it's going to produce flows that move further away," said Wendy Stovall, a U.S. Geological Survey volcanologist. The only three survivors of Cuba's worst aviation disaster in three decades were clinging to life today, a day after their passenger jet crashed in a fireball in Havana's rural outskirts with 113 people on board. In the first official death toll provided by authorities, Transportation Minister Adel Yzquierdo Rodriguez said 110 had died including five children. He also announced that a flight recorder from the plane had been located. Carlos Alberto Martinez, director of Havana's Calixto Garcia Hospital where the survivors were being treated, said doctors are always hopeful that their patients will recover, but he acknowledged that the three Cuban women were in extremely grave condition. 20 hurt, 1 missing after blast at Texas chemical plant
Authorities say an explosion and fire at a chemical plant near Houston injured 20 people and left one missing. Television station KHOU reports that the blast happened this morning at the Kuraray America Eval factory in Pasadena. The local fire marshal says 20 people were hurt and one is missing. The extent of the injuries isn't known. The fire has gone out. According to the company's website, the plant specializes in making chemicals, fiber and resin.

3 people injured as rail-bus hits car at unmanned railway crossing
Three people, including a woman, were injured today when a Mathura Junction-bound rail-bus hit a car at an unmanned railway crossing here. The accident took place near Govind Nagar here. While two injured perosns have been discharged, the woman is being treated at a hospital, a PROof Nayati hospital said. The driver of the rail-bus coming from Vrindaban has been arrested for negligence of duty, a Railway Protection Force official said. Meanwhile, an enquiry into the incident has been ordered, an official said.
Plane in Cuba crash was poorly maintained, alleges former pilot
A Mexican pilot who once flew the leased passenger plane that crashed in Cuba, killing 107 people on board, said today he had previously complained about alleged sub-standard practices by the aircraft's owner. Marco Aurelio Hernandez told the Mexican newspaper Milenio that the Mexican aircraft leasing firm Global Air exercised poor plane maintenance, had a ban from flying in Chile, and had flights fly at night in Venezuela without radar. He said that during 2005 and 2013 he had flown all three Boeing planes owned by Global Air (also known as Damojh), including the 39-year-old one that went down on Friday after taking off from Havana's airport. During his time at Global Air, he said, he had lodged a complaint for "lack of maintenance of the planes" despite the company having "very skilled" aircraft mechanics. 2 killed in separate road accidents in UP
Two people died and five were injured in separate road accidents in Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh today, police said. Rama Shankar Mishra (50), a resident of Ragghupur, died after the motor-bike he was riding on was hit by another vehicle near his village. A person riding pillion with Mishra was injured and has been admitted to a hospital, police said. In another accident, Rajaram (36), was hit by a vehicle in Pahadpur village. He died at a hospital, police said.

Anti-hijack mock exercise at LGBI Airport in Guwahati
An anti-hijack mock exercise was conducted at the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport here today to check preparedness and to improve the contingency plan to handle a hijack situation. The exercise was conducted under the chairmanship of Assam Home and Political Department Secretary Kanak Chandra Sarma, an AAI-North East region release said here. The Director of LGBI Airport B K Tailong was the Convenor, it said. Gujarat: 19 labourers killed as truck overturns
Nineteen persons, including 12 women and three children, were killed, and six others injured after their truck overturned near Dholera in Ahmedabad district early today, police said. The incident took place at Bavaliyari village on the Ahmedabad-Bhavnagar Highway when the driver of the cement-laden truck, which was coming from the Pipavav Port, lost control over the vehicle and it turned turtle. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the kin of the deceased, and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident. Two killed as van hits lorry in TN
Two persons were killed and nine others injured when a van rammed into a lorry in the district today, police said. The accident took place in Perundurai, they said adding the injured have been hospitalised.
