Helicopters rescue residents after fresh Hawaii volcano lava flow

Helicopters were rushed in to rescue four trapped residents after lava flowing from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano isolated a cluster of homes, local officials said today, a day after the volcano erupted and shot a huge plume of ash miles (kilometers) into the sky. Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim wrote on Twitter that "fast moving lava from Fissure 20 has crossed Pohoiki Rd near Malama Ki Place," near the Puna forest reserve. The lava is "isolating appx 40 homes in area," he wrote, adding that four people were "safely evacuated" by Hawaii County and National Guard helicopters. "If u r still in area stay in safe place & await official instructions," Kim warned. No request made for chartered flights to transport Cong, JD(S) MLAs: Sinha

The Civil Aviation Ministry today dismissed the allegations by the JD(S) in Karnataka that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation denied permission to chartered flights scheduled to carry the party's legislators along with those of the Congress from Bengaluru to Kochi, saying no such request was received. The JD(S) had on Thursday alleged that chartered flights that were scheduled to carry its legislators along with those of the Congress were denied permission by the DGCA at the last minute. "DGCA and Air Traffic Control confirm that no requests were received for chartered flights to transport INC and/or JD(S) MLAs. Thus there is no question of anyone not being allowed to fly by central government agencies," Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha tweeted this afternoon. 8-year-old charred to death in Jammu slum fire

An eight-year-old boy was charred to death as a major blaze engulfed over 50 shanties in a slum cluster in Jammu's Trikuta Nagar extension, police said today. Neeraj was asleep when the fire broke out in the locality, housing labourers from outside the state, they said. The boy's body was recovered from the debris, the police said, adding that the cause of fire was yet to be ascertained.

Two dead in Iran protest

A semi-official news agency is quoting Iranian authorities who say two people have been killed and 48 injured in a violent protest in southwest Iran. The report today from ISNA quotes Chief Justice of Fars Province Ali Alghasimehr as saying that many of the injured in the Wednesday night protest in Kazeroon were police. The report did not say how the fatalities or injuries occurred. Protesters gathered in response to a call on social media in the city some 900 kilometres south of Tehran. They also set fire to a police station. Until Wednesday, the city had been the scene of peaceful protests against a local government decision to divide some districts of the city and merge them into a new town.

Congo says 3 new Ebola cases confirmed in large city

Three new cases of the often lethal Ebola virus have been confirmed in a city of more than 1 million people, Congo's health minister announced, as the spread of the hemorrhagic fever in an urban area raised alarm. The statement late Friday said the confirmed cases are in Mbandaka city, where a single case was confirmed earlier in the week. There are now 17 confirmed Ebola cases in this outbreak, including one death, plus 21 probable cases and five suspected ones. The World Health Organization on Friday decided not to declare the outbreak a global health emergency, but it called the risk of spread within Congo "very high" and warned nine neighboring countries that the risk to them was high. WHO said there should be no international travel or trade restrictions. The outbreak is a test of a new experimental Ebola vaccine that proved effective in the West Africa outbreak a few years ago. Vaccinations are expected to start early in the week, with more than 4,000 doses already in Congo and .

PM condoles loss of lives in Gujarat accident

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in a road accident in Gujarat today. At least 18 people were killed when a cement-laden truck overtuned on a highway near Bhavnagar. "My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives due to an accident. Three dead after van overturns in valley in C'garh's Kabirdham

Three people, including two women, were today killed and 20 others injured, five of them critically, after the van they were travelling in overturned in a valley in Chhattisgarhs Kabirdham district, police said. "The Matador van overturned while navigating a sharp curve in Chilfi valley today morning. It was heading to Kamadabri village in Bodla here from Khutatola village in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh," Chilfi police station officer Saurabh Upadhyay told PTI. They were around 25-30 people in the van and the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle after which it skidded off the road and then overturned, he said. "Three people, including two women, died instantly. Twenty people have been injured. The condition of five of those injured is critical. Fresh thunderstorm hits Delhi-NCR

The National Capital Region (NCR) and its adjoining areas witnessed a fresh thunderstorm on Saturday afternoon with gusty winds, followed by rain in some parts.The minimum temperature recorded in the afternoon was 29 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature, on the other hand, was nearly 42 degrees Celsius.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials on Saturday morning had issued a forecast of a thunderstorm in various parts of Delhi and NCR.The warning came after deadly storms on May 13 and 14 claimed over 80 lives across five states in the country.Earlier on May 2, at least 100 people died in north India and some other states, because of thunderstorms.

Man, wife killed in road accident in UP's Badaun

A man and his wife were killed and their five-year-old son was injured today after a truck hit their motorcycle on the Delhi road here, police said. The accident took place around 10 am in the Ujhani area. Sukhbir Sharma (27) and his wife Reena Sharma (23) died on the spot and their son was injured, Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Jitendra Kumar Srivastava said. The accident occurred when they were returning to Noida after meeting their relatives here, the officer said. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and the truck's driver has been arrested, police said.

Saudi Arabia: Nine killed in pilgrim bus mishap

At least nine people were killed on Friday evening when a bus carrying pilgrims met with an accident in Saudi Arabia.The bus was travelling to Medina from Mecca via Al Hijrah when its "driver lost control" and it "veered off and fell off a bridge on the highway", Geo News reported, citing Arab media.Six of the total injured are in critical condition.The pilgrims were reportedly Asians.Eighteen other pilgrims sustained multiple injuries - of whom six are in a critical condition. 20 tourists from Gujarat injured in road accident in HP

At least 20 tourists from Gujarat were injured this morning when a bus turned turtle at Mangrot on Bilaspur-Shimla Highway, about 80 km from here, police said. The ill-fated bus carrying 41 persons was on its way from Shimla to Manali, they said. The accident reportedly took place due to over speeding and two cars parked on the roadside were also damaged, police said. The injured persons were rushed to the civil hospital in Bilaspur and are stated to be out of danger. A case has been registered and investigations was underway, police added.

In a first, rlys to use AI to control air circulation in Manipur tunnel

For the first time, the railways will use artifical intelligence to control air circulation, signages and even supervision and maintenance work in the 10.28 km-long tunnel in Imphal as part of its 110 km railway line from Jiribam to Manipur's capital city. While the national transporter is already using this technique to detect flaws or problems in the signalling system on a real-time basis and rectifying it in order to avoid possible delays and mishaps, this is the first time that such a technology will be used in a tunnel in the country. The system will control air circulation in the system, along with other aspects. It will alert the passenger in case of fire and help us in quick evacuation in case of any issue. 19 people killed as truck overturns in Gujarat

Sixteen labourers and three children were killed and six others injured after a truck they were travelling in overturned at Bavaliyari village near Dholera here early today, police said. The accident took place on Ahmedabad-Bhavnagar highway when the cement-laden truck was coming from Pipavav Port in Bhavnagar district, police said. "There were 25 labourers travelling in the truck. The vehicle turned turtle early morning and 19 labourers were crushed to death," Ahmedabad Superintendent of Police R V Asari said. The deceased included 12 women and three children, he said, adding that while 18 of them died on the spot, another one died in a hospital. Six injured were admitted to a nearby hospital, the officer said. "The accident seems to have taken place as the driver of the truck lost control over the vehicle. After the mishap, the driver escaped from the spot and a search has been launched to trace him," Asari said. Further investigation is underway.

Hawaii officials warn residents about latest lava flow

Hawaii officials warned residents that fast-moving lava was approaching an area near homes that were previously destroyed by eruptions from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano. Hawaii County Civil Defense said police, firefighters and National Guard troops were securing the area of the Big Island and stopping people from entering. About 40 homes were isolated in the newly affected area east of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens two neighborhoods where lava has destroyed 40 structures, including 26 homes, over the past two weeks. 8 killed in road accident in UP

At least eight people were killed and five injured, when a tractor trolley fell into a gorge here today, police said. Circle Officer Gunnaur Shakeel Ahmed said the accident occurred at the t-point at Anupshahr road in Rajpura area, when a tractor carrying some people from Moradabad fell into a gorge. Eight people were killed, while five injured, the CO said. He added that the injured were admitted to a community health centre in Rajpura for treatment, while the bodies were sent for post-mortem. Thunderstorm, squall likely to hit Delhi-NCR in 2 hrs
