The number of homes destroyed by Hawaii's Kilauea volcano jumped to 31 as scientists reported lava spewing more than 200 feet (61 meters) into the air. Some of the more than 1,700 people who evacuated prepared for the possibility they may not return for quite some time. Hawaii officials said the decimated homes were in the Leilani Estates subdivision, where molten rock, toxic gas and steam have been bursting through openings in the ground created by the volcano. Locals facing hardship due to power cut in storm-hit Rajasthan

Swarm of quakes hits El Salvador, damaging dozens of homes

A swarm of earthquakes shook southern El Salvador today, damaging dozens of homes, but there were no immediate reports of serious injuries or deaths. The US Geological Survey said at least nine quakes of magnitude 4.3 or greater struck the region beginning in the morning, including three of magnitude 5.2 to 5.6. The Central American nation's civil defense agency posted photos online of damaged roofs and rock slides. It said at least 75 homes had damage and three were destroyed. Civil defense director Jorge Melendez said one of the quakes unleashed slides on a highway leading to Playa El Cuco, one of the most visited tourist beaches in the area. 2 killed, woman pilot injured in car accident in Gurgaon

Two men were killed and a woman pilot was injured after a SUV hit their car at an underpass of the 16-lane Golf Course road this morning, police said. The accident took place around 5 am. The victims were taken to Neel Kanth hospital where the driver, Vinod Yadav, and security guard Kishor Kumar died of multiple injuries during treatment, a senior police officer said. "Swarn Gayatri, a pilot of Indigo airlines, sitting in the rear seat is battling for life. She was referred to Medanta hospital," he said. "Gayatri, a resident of Gurgaon, had hired a private cab to go to the airport. When the car reached the Sikandarpur underpass, a speeding SUV coming from the wrong side hit it head on," the officer said. During investigation it was found that the occupants of the SUV managed to escape from spot after the accident, he added. "We have registered a case and seized the vehicle. 7 injured, 200 houses collapsed in storm in Nadia

Seven persons were injured and about 200 houses were collapsed in a storm in Nadia district today, District Magistrate Sumit Gupta said. The storm with a speed of about 90 to 100 km per hour lashed places such as Ranaghat, Hanskhali and Krishnagar. While seven persons were injured in house collapse or by uprooted trees, Gupta said. District administration sources said while 200 houses collapsed, 300 were partially damaged.

2 killed after being struck by lightning in J'khand

Two persons were killed and as many injured this evening after being struck by lightning in Bana village, about 55 kms from here, in Jharkhand's Saraikela-Kharswan district, police said. The incident occurred when storm accompanied by rain and thunderbolt lashed the area. The victims, who were at a social function, took shelter under a tamarind tree, police said. They fell unconscious after lightning struck them. They were taken to a nearby primary health centre by the villagers, sources said They said while doctors declared Somay Hansda (25) and Krishan Hansda (22) brought dead, two others identified as 27-year-old Diku Hansda and 26-year-old Surai Besra were seriously injured. The injured have been referred to the M G M Hospital here, where they have been admitted.

Assistant train driver dies after locomotive catches fire

An assistant train driver today died while trying to douse a fire that broke out in the locomotive of a Mumbai-bound train at Dhamangaon, around 125 km from here, railway officials said. Assistant loco-pilot S K Vishwakarma died after a fire engulfed the locomotive of the 12810 Howrah-Mumbai CSMT train at 4:57pm, said a railway official. "The train stopped between Talni and Dhamangaon after the locomotive caught fire. Vishwakaram and loco-pilot DL Brahme, who had applied emergency brakes to stall the train, tried to douse the fire by using extinguishers provided for the purpose. However, in the process, Vishwakarma lost his life," said S G Rao, assistant commercial manager, Nagpur Railway Division, Central Railway. Rao said that the sequence of events that led to the death of Vishwakarma was not yet known. Thunderstorm warning: Schools in Hry to remain shut on May 7, 8

The meteorological department has warned of thunderstorm accompanied with squall at isolated places in Haryana between May 7 and 8, following which the state government decided that all government and private schools will remain closed on these two days. State Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma today said the decision to keep schools closed on May 7 and 8 has been taken in view of the MeT Depatment's warning. The weatherman has forecast thunderstorm with squall at isolated places in the state on May 7 and thunderstorm with squall and hail at some places on May 8. In view of the warning, the Haryana Revenue and Disaster Management Department, in an advisory, has suggested safety tips to be adopted in case of thunderstorms, dust storms and squall. A spokesperson of the department said there is no need to panic and people should follow the precautions, pay special attention to children and senior citizens. All departments have been directed to stay alert, he said.

Two die, IndiGo first-officer suffer injuries

Two persons died while an IndiGo first-officer has suffered serious injuries after the cab in which they were travelling met an accident.The incident took place at about 5.30 a.m. today morning near DLF Phase 1 in Gurgaon.The cab driver and the security guard, accompanying the officer died on the spot.The officer, who was travelling by cab to Delhi airport for her flight duties this morning, was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital."The airline staffs are present at the hospital and in contact with the family of the injured staff member," the IndiGo said in a statement.The accident is being investigated by the police.

Landslide near Assam-Meghalaya border hits traffic on NH-44

Road communication between Assam and Meghalaya by National Highway 44 has been disrupted following a massive landslide at Sonapur near Meghalaya border since last night affecting vehicular traffic, an official release said here today. The NH 44 not only connects Assam and Meghalaya, but also considered the lifeline of Tripura, Mizoram and Barak Valley of southern Assam. The landslides on the Shillong-Silchar NH-44 that connects the Assam capital with Silchar via Jowai in Meghalaya, has disrupted traffic movement with hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the spot. There was no report of any casualty. The landslide brought in massive mound of mud and boulders triggered by incessant rain over the past couple of days and several earth movers have been pressed into service to clear the debris, the release said. Floods kill 3 in Nepal

At least three persons were killed and two children missing in floods triggered by heavy rains in Nepal's western Bajhang district, police said today. Two women and a man residing in Thalara rural municipality area were swept away by the flooded Guhe river last night, they said. Their bodies were recovered this morning, the police said, adding that two children have also gone missing in the incident. A team of officials has been mobilised to carry out relief and rescue operations. Some houses have also been swept away in the flooding.

4 injured as iron bridge collapses in JK, inquiry ordered

A 300-metre iron bridge, constructed by IRCON over a stream near the longest under-construction railway tunnel in India, collapsed in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir today, prompting the state government to order an inquiry into the accident. Two trucks, loaded with construction material for the railway tunnel, were crossing the bridge over Nallah Bishlari in Ramsoo area when it collapsed, resulting in injuries to both the drivers and their conductors, officials said. The four miraculously escaped the mishap with only minor injuries and were discharged after first-aid, they said. The trucks were badly damaged however. The bridge was laid by IRCON about four years ago on the approach road leading to the under-construction railway tunnel between Khari and Sumber areas in the district. 23 miners killed in Quetta twin coal mine collapse

At least 23 miners have been killed after two neighbouring coal mines caved in here due to gas explosions.The death toll is likely to rise.The first incident occurred at a mine in Marwaarh, east of the city of Quetta in Balochistan."The roof caved in following an explosion triggered by the accumulation of methane gas, killing 16 miners and wounding nine others, two of them seriously", Jawaid Shahwani, commissioner of Quetta Division said, as quoted by Geo News.According to him, nearly 25 workers were inside the mine when the explosion occurred. SIA aircraft develops technical snag at Kolkata airport

A Singapore Airlines aircraft has developed a technical snag while landing at Kolkata airport and got stuck on the main runway, forcing the authorities of the airport to shut down the runway for sometime, officials said today. The incident happened yesterday night after the Singapore Airlines plane landed at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport here. An Airports Authority of India (AAI) official said the technical snag was developed due to hydraulic failure and the main runway was closed because of spillage of hydraulic oil there. The main runway had to be shut down for 1 hour 15 minutes but there was no flight disruption since the secondary runway was available, NSCBIA Director Atul Dixit said. When he failed to get reserved seats, the Delhi resident decided to take a bus to Madhubani. Mishra, flanked by his wife and son and waiting for the bus near the Anand Vihar bus terminus here, said he was aware of a recent accident in which a Delhi-bound bus fell into a 20-foot deep pit and burst into flames in Bihar's East Champaran district.
