India to soon begin forecasting reach of tsunami waves in-land

India would now be able to foretell the distance a destructive sea wave would travel after it breaches the coast, a prediction that can greatly reduce loss of life and property. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, has developed a model to predict how far sea water would travel after violating natural boundaries, INCOIS Director SSC Shenoi said. This would be a Level-3 alert under India's Tsunami Early Warning System, put in place after the deadly 2004 tsunami. The Level-1 tracks the magnitude of a tsunami and Level-2 generates an alert about a potential tsunami and wave height. On December 26 in 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake struck beneath the Indian Ocean near Indonesia, triggering one of the biggest tsunamis the world had ever seen. It claimed more than 2 lakh lives in South and Southeast Asian nations. During the tsunami, deadly waves of up to 30 metres lashed at the coast. "But we were not able to tell how much will ..

Some calming of Hawaii volcano, but scientists remain wary

The number of homes destroyed by lava shooting out of openings in the ground created by Hawaii's Kilauea volcano climbed to five as some of the more than 1,700 people who evacuated prepared for the possibility they may not return for quite some time. "I have no idea how soon we can get back," said Todd Corrigan, who left his home in Leilani Estates with his wife on Friday as lava burst through the ground three or four blocks from their home. They spent the night on the beach in their car and began looking for a vacation rental. The Hawaiian Volcanoes Observatory said eight vents, each several hundred yards long, opened in the neighbourhood since Thursday. By late yesterday the fissures had quieted down and were only releasing steam and gas. Scientists said Kilauea was likely to release more lava through additional vents, but they were unable to predict exactly where. Leilani Estates, a subdivision in the mostly rural district of Puna, is at greatest risk. Authorities ordered more than
