Four people, including two children, died in two fires in south and northwest Delhi, a fire department official said today. In the first incident, a 10-year-old boy and his nine-year-old sister were charred to death after an air conditioner's compressor exploded at their home in northwest Delhi's Adarsh Nagar area, the official said. Two coal mines today collapsed in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province, killing at least 18 people and injuring six others, officials said. A mine in Marwar area near provincial capital Quetta collapsed due to gas explosion and about two dozen miners were trapped inside. Deputy Commissioner Quetta Farrukh Atique told PTI that that 16 people have died in the collapse. "We have recovered all the 16 bodies from the rubble caused by the collapse in the coal mine," Atique said. "We have also rescued six workers who are trapped in the rubble and have sent them to hospital for treatment but one miner is still trapped under the rubble" he said. A car collided with an autorickshaw in Bikaner district, killing four people and injuring seven others, police said today. The Odisha government has asked all district collectors of the state to complete their assessment on damage due to hailstorm and whirlwind and send reports by May 10. The damage reports should be sent along with the proposals for sanctioning of funds towards assistance for houses damaged and input subsidy to farmers who have suffered crop loss, the Special Relief Commissioner of Odisha, B P Sethi, said, in a letter to all district collectors. Farmers suffered crop loss and houses were damaged in at least six districts due to hailstorm and whirlwind in the month of April and till date this month, officials said. A draft policy on road safety, placed in the public domain by the Delhi government's Transport Department, identifies encroachments as one of the reasons behind road accidents and calls for recognition of rights of pedestrians. An earthquake that hit a South African gold mine claimed a total of seven lives, its owner said today, after rescue operations were completed at the site outside Johannesburg. The epicentre of the 2.2-magnitude quake was close to where the miners were working on Thursday, and 13 employees were trapped about three kilometres (two miles) below the surface. "The last three employees who were recovered (had) passed away from their injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities as a result of the seismic event to seven," mining company Sibanye-Stillwater said in a statement.
