Opposition leader Vijender Gupta was today marshalled out of Delhi assembly while three other BJP legislators staged a walkout to register their protest after their request for a discussion on "water crises" in the city was turned down. As the House proceedings began, opposition members showed bottles of contaminated water allegedly being supplied in various areas of Delhi. Gupta, and two other BJP MLAs, O P Sharma and Jagdish Pradhan, trooped into the Well of the House demanding discussion on alleged water crises in the city. Gupta and Sharma went near the chair of Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, showing him bottles of contaminated water. As Gupta turned the mike, Speaker got angry and ordered him to be marshalled out of the House. The Speaker also suspended Gupta for the day from the House proceedings. To register their protest, other BJP MLAs also walked out of the House.
Six persons were killed and 12 others injured in separate accidents in Erode and Dindigul districts today, police said. Four persons, including three members of a family, were killed when the car in which they were travelling collided with a bus near a bus-stand in Dindigul, they said. The driver and three others, including two women, died on the spot, police said. Two car passengers, who were seriously injured, have been admitted to hospital. In Erode, two persons were killed and ten others injured when a van collided with a lorry, police said. The driver and his assistant died on the spot while seven others in the van were injured, they said. Three persons travelling in the lorry, including its driver, were also injured.
Some 120 flights were cancelled and many more rescheduled due to a two-day closure of the Mumbai International Airport runway starting from Monday.

A Congress candidate for next month's panchayat polls in West Bengal was today killed in a road accident in Malda district when she was on way to file her nomination papers. The candidate, Babita Singh, who was riding pillion on a motorcycle, died on the spot when a truck hit the two-wheeler at Jadupur area on NH24, a police official said. Singh, an aspirant for Maharajpur gram panchayat, was going to English Bazar block office for submitting her nomination papers. Today is the last day for filing nomination papers for the panchayat polls. A Congress supporter, who was driving the motorcycle, was injured. He was rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital, the official said. The truck has been seized but the driver and the helper of the vehicle escaped, he said. The panchayat elections are scheduled to be held on May 1, May 3 and May 5 respectively and the votes are to be counted on May 8.
Blackbucks in Odisha have found a sympathetic lot in Ganjam district, who actively protect the endangered animals from poaching activities. Residents of Bhetanai-Balipadara area in the district have come to the rescue of the blackbucks by forming a protective brigade around their only habitat in the state near Aska area, forest officials said. Community-led conservation measures, which raised awareness among the villagers, have resulted in their numbers steadily rising since 1998, when the total number of blackbucks in the region stood at 551, they said. In 2004, the number of blackbucks rose to 786, in 2006 to 1,101 and in 2008 to 1,672, the officials said. A total of 58 blackbucks have died in the last three years in the region, mostly due to road accidents, stray dog attacks and old age. "Only one died due to poaching in Aska. The credit goes to the villagers who actively protect the animals," said B K Acharya, divisional forest officer (DFO) of Ghumusar South Forest .
The Supreme Court on Monday will hear a plea challenging a Allahabad High Court order denying bail to the accused in the Gorakhpur fire tragedy case.Earlier on January 8 this year, a major fire gutted the principal's office and an adjacent record room of the state-run BRD hospital in Gorakhpur.The inferno had reportedly destroyed the files related to the case, where an alleged shortage of oxygen had caused the death of 63 children, including infants, within a span of one week.However, no loss of life was reported in the fire incident.Meanwhile, two separate probes were launched into the fire incident by the district administration and the fire department.

At least four people, including an infant, were killed and two others injured when a car collided with a truck here this morning, the police said. The car, carrying six people, was on its way to Mumbai from Bhavnagar when it collided with the truck coming from the opposite direction around 5.30 am at Kural village, about 20 km from the district headquarters, an official at the Vadu police station said. The truck driver fled the spot after the mishap, he said. A woman and a one-year-old child were among the four car occupants killed in the mishap, the official said. The two injured persons were admitted to the government-run Sir Sayajirao General Hospital in Vadodara for treatment, he said. The police registered a case in connection with the mishap, the official said, adding that a search for the truck driver was on.
Thousands of fliers are likely to be inconvenienced as the main runway of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai will be closed for six hours, on Monday and Tuesday.The runway will be closed between 11 am to 5 pm on both the days.A source said that all airlines were intimated on the development a long time back and no flights will be scheduled during the affected time period.Also, the maintenance work is at the intersection, as no alternate runway will be available during the period.Owing to this, Air India (AI) has has cancelled 34 flights, while it has rescheduled eight of its flights, all domestic-bound.The AI issued a statement, "Due to maintenance activities to the runway at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, the runway will be closed on April 9, 2018 and April 10, 2018 from 1100 hrs to 1700 hrs. A pregnant woman lost her baby and received critical injuries after the ambulance she was travelling in, hit a divider in Thane's Anand Nagar Sunday morning.The ambulance was on its way from Malegaon to Mumbai with four family members of the woman and driver, who also sustained injuries.The Police officials, traffic police, Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC), and the Fire Brigade rushed to the site with an emergency tender.The injured were shifted to Rajawadi Hospital, Mumbai.
A 5.6-magnitude quake hit western Japan early today, injuring five people and damaging buildings and roads, as officials warned stronger tremors could come in the days ahead. The shallow tremor was gauged as magnitude 5.6 by the US Geological Survey and 6.1 by Japans meteorological agency on the Richter scale. It rocked the west of the main island of Honshu, 96 kilometres north of Hiroshima, at 1:32 AM (2200 IST yesterday). The Japanese agency urged residents to stay vigilant. An elderly shopkeeper died in a fire at his shop at Sarita Vihar in south east Delhi, police said today. A call alerting about the fire was received around 4.25 AM by the Delhi fire services, officials said. The fire fighters who responded to the call reported recovery of a charred body, identified as Rajesh Gupta,62, from the grocery shop, said a fire services official. The cause of fire was not immediately known but a short circuit was suspected to have triggered it, said a police officer.
