The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has awarded a compensation of Rs 30.77 lakh to the kin of a man killed in a car accident in October 2014. In a recent order, MACT member K D Vadane directed respondents Sanjay Wagh of Nashik, the owner of the car, and insurer United India Insurance Company Limited, to make the payment to the kin of the victim along with interest at 8 per cent per annum from the date of filing the claim. The application was filed by family members of Manohar Chavan, who was killed in the accident. They contended that Chavan, who was working with the Thane Municipal Corporation as a driver, on October 24, 2014, was knocked down by a car while standing on the Mumbai-Nashik highway. Both the respondents contested the claim and but the MACT rejected their submissions and awarded the compensation.
An elderly person was killed while five of his family members were injured when the car they were travelling in veered off a road and plunged into deep gorge in Doda district today, police said. The family, which was on its way to Bhadarwah, reportedly met with an accident near Seri village on Doda-Bhadarwah National Highway at 11 am, they said. "A Hyundai i10 Car skidded off the road after colliding with another vehicle coming from opposite direction and fell into a 300-feet deep gorge into Neru river," Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Bhadarwah) Brijesh Sharma said. According the officer, the locals immediately reached the spot and retrieved all the six persons, including a toddler, from the damaged vehicle. The victims were rushed to a district hospital, where do the elderly man was declared brought dead, the officer added. A Bangladeshi passenger who reportedly stripped naked and attacked a stewardess during a flight from Malaysia has been arrested, the airline said today. A passenger bus collided head-on with a truck on an inter-city highway in Pakistan, killing at least nine people, including one woman and two children, and injuring 29 others, according to a media report. The incident occurred after the truck attempted to overtake another vehicle and hit the passenger bus coming from opposite direction, Geo News reported. At least nine people were killed and 29 others injured in the accident, the report said. The injured were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, while 14 of the critically wounded passengers were moved to Rawalpindi, sources were quoted as saying by the report. Three persons were killed and four injured when a four-wheeler overturned in Rasda area here, police said today. The incident occurred last evening when the driver lost control over the jeep, they said. Two skiers from France and Belgium were killed in avalanches in the French Alps while three other people remain missing, a local official said. Six members of a family were injured today when an LPG cylinder exploded inside a house in the city's Behala area, police said. The condition of three were stated to be critical while two were undergoing treatment and one was discharged from the hospital, a senior official of Behala police station said. The Gujarat government has made plans to maintain water supply till July 31 this year in areas likely to face shortage, officials said today. After attending a high level meeting yesterday on the looming water crisis in the state, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani directed concerned officers to ensure sufficient water storage in reservoirs in Saurashtra and Kutch regions. He also asked them to "ensure judicious use of stored water in locally available reservoirs elsewhere for drinking purposes," an official release said. "In the wake of likely water shortage during the coming summer months, Gujarat government has made advance planning to maintain drinking water supply in the worst affected areas till July 31," it said. Rupani also directed the collectors to review the water supply situation every week, it said. The bodies of two youths, who went missing on Friday at Gopalpur beach, were recovered today, police said. The bodies were found floating around 2km away from the Gopalpur Port, a senior police officer said. "About 16 students of two private colleges in Berhampur town had gone to the seas after Holi celebrations on Friday. Of them, four went missing," the officer said. The local people immediately alerted the police and managed to rescue one the students with the help of fishermen, he said. Later on Friday, a team of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force personnel fished out one of the bodies, even as two others remained missing. A suspected gas leakage was reported from an area near Ghatla village in suburban Chembur here late tonight, said a senior official of the Disaster Management Cell of the Brihanumbai Municipal Corporation. The leakage, which was noticed around 10.50 PM, led to panic among residents, he said. Teams of Fire Brigade as well as the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board had reached the spot, said the official, adding that nature of the gas and source of the leakage is being investigated.
Seven people were killed and as many injured today after a speeding car ran over them in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district, a police officer said. The accident took place late this evening near the Baroda bridge under the Chakradharpur police station, about 90 kms from here. Three people, including a 12-year-old boy, were killed in road accidents in various parts of the city on Holi, police said today.
