Two killed in fire at stationery shop-cum-residence

A woman and her five-year-old daughter were killed in a fire at a shop in Airoli area of Navi Mumbai early today, a fire department official said. The fire broke out around 4 am in the stationery shop in which the victims used to live, Airoli fire station in-charge Eknath Pawar said. On getting information about the blaze, firemen rushed to the spot. As the shop was locked from inside, they broke open the door to enter the premises engulfed with dense smoke, he said. The fire department personnel found the bodies of Manju Choudhary (28) and her daughter Gayatri Choudhary (5), who apparently died of suffocation, the official said. The shop owner, his brother and two toddlers, aged 1 and 2, were rescued from the premises, Pawar said. The cause of the fire was being probed, he said, adding that preliminary findings indicated the blaze occurred due to a short-circuit. The bodies have been sent to a government hospital for a postmortem examination, he added.

One killed after fire breaks out in Mumbai's godown

One person was killed after a massive fire broke out at a godown in Mittal Estate building in Mumbai's Andheri on Thursday.Five fire tenders rushed to the spot and after an hour of hard work flames were doused.The deceased has been identified as Pradeep Vishwakarma (30). Florida school shooting suspect in custody: sheriff

US authorities said today they had arrested a suspect who is believed to have opened fire at a high school in Florida -- an incident that may have caused a "number of fatalities," according to the state's senior senator. "Shooter is now in custody. Scene is still active," the Broward County sheriff's department said on Twitter. US Senator Bill Nelson told CNN and MSNBC that the school district's superintendent believes there are a "number of fatalities." Earlier, firefighters told the local CBS affiliate that there were between 20 and 50 people wounded in the incident.

One dead, 20 injured in Florida school shooting

At least one person was killed and 20 others were injured in a shootout at a high school in South Florida, local authorities said today. The White House said President Donald Trump has been briefed about the incident. Local officials told Miami Herald that the fire department is responding to a mass casualty incident at the high school. They confirmed at least one fatality, the daily said. "The President has spoken with Governor Scott of Florida and offered federal assistance if needed. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen also spoke with Governor Scott as well as state and local officials. A shooting at a high school in Florida today has left between 20 and 50 people hurt, local media reported, citing firefighters. Close shave for BJP legislator as boom barrier falls on vehicle

A BJP legislator here had a narrow escape as a boom barrier at Mahuvan Toll Plaza on the National Highway 2 fell on his running vehicle, followed by a ruckus by his supporters, police said today. The incident occurred yesterday when Legislator Puran Prakash was going to participate in an event. "If my driver did not apply break timely, the accident would have been fatal," the legislator said. Following the incident, his supporters, who were present nearby, started beating the toll plaza staff for behaving carelessly. The legislator later filed an FIR against the staff and management of the toll plaza in Farah Police Station here. Man, son die in road accident

A man and his 21-year-old son today died in a head-on collision between two vehicles in south east Delhi, police said today. The deceased Triloki Nath Tiwari (55) and his son Vikas (21), along with others, were travelling on a car which crashed into a SUV near Kalindikunj Lakkad market around midnight yesterday, DCP (south east) Chinmoy Biswal said. "A police emergency response vehicle patrolling on Agra Canal road rushed to the spot along with police men from Jaitpur Police Station and rescued the injured people," Biswal said, adding Tiwari and his son Vikas were declared dead by the doctors. Tiwari's other son, Abhay, one Sachin and the owner of the SUV, Hariom (25), were admitted to a hospital and were unfit to make any statement, the DCP added.

Woman crossing road dies after hit by tanker

A 32-year-old woman died after being hit by a water tanker in Kalina area of suburban Santa Cruz today, police said. The accident occurred near CST Road at around 3:30 PM when Chandani Vishwakarma was crossing road when a water tanker knocked her down, a senior police official said. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead before admission, he said. The deceased was a resident of Saat Rasta in suburban Mahalaxmi. The tanker driver, identified as Mahesh Gautam (25), was arrested under sections 304 (a) (causing death due to negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the IPC, the official said. Vakola Police have seized the tanker.

Traffic constable killed in hit-and-run case

A traffic constable, who was severely injured after being hit by an unknown vehicle on Monday night in Sarkhej locality here, died during treatment today, police said. Constable Sureshbhai Vasava died at the civil hospital here, an official of M division traffic police station said. Vasava was returning home on a motorcycle after completing a night shift around 11 pm on Monday when an unknown vehicle hit him near Shantipura circle at Sarkhej. "He sustained fractures in shoulder and back and was in a serious condition," said the police official. Police are yet to identify the vehicle and the driver involved in the accident.

UP CM announces Rs 50 cr relief for hailstorm-hit farmers of 15 districts

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today allocated Rs 50 crore for providing relief to the farmers of 15 districts, who suffered losses due to hailstorm, while directing the officers to assess the amount of losses in the other districts. At a review meeting here with state Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Sahi and the officers of the department, the chief minister sanctioned Rs 50 crore for the 15 districts, including Jhansi, Jalaun, Banda, Chitrakoot, Mahoba, Aligarh, Allahabad, Hamirpur, Kannauj, Lucknow and Hardoi. "The chief minister has also asked to assess the losses in the other districts within 48 hours and sought a report in this regard," an official release issued here said. The district magistrates were also directed to ensure that the farmers got the relief, it added.

Centre seeks report from CSL on explosion on ONGC drill ship

The Centre today sought a report from Cochin Shipyard Limited on the explosion and fire on an under repair ONGC drill ship that claimed five lives, even as a preliminary probe suggested it was caused by 'momentary explosion of high impact'. Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan visited the shipyard this morning and tookstock of the situation on board "Sagar Bhushan," a day after the ONGC ship was hit by the explosion. "The Minister instructed CSL to conduct a thorough investigation and ascertain the root cause and report the details to Ministry of Shipping," a CSL statement said here. The condition of one of the seriously injured persons continues to be critical, the company said. Hailstorms: Maha seeks Rs 200 crore in aid from Centre

With hailstorms causing extensive damage to crops in Vidarbha and Marathwada regions earlier this week, the Maharashtra government has demanded Rs 200 crore from the Centre for providing aid to farmers. State Agriculture Minister Pandurang Fundkar said here that hailstorms have affected crops over two lakh hectares. "Most of the panchnama (inspection) reports of affected crops have been done on February 11 and 12. So far we have ascertained that crops on about two lakh hectares across 1,900 villages have been affected," the minister said. "We have written to the Centre and sought Rs 200 crore. I will be meeting the Union Agriculture Minister on February 22 in New Delhi and press the demand," he said. Compensation for the crop damage will be provided from the National Disaster Response Fund and also by insurance companies, Fundkar said. UK: 2 hurt in 'vehicle accident' at Heathrow Airport

London's Heathrow Airport says two men have been injured after a "serious accident involving two vehicles" on the airfield. Five killed in accident with DR Congo presidential motorcade

Three soldiers and two civilians were killed and 11 other people injured in an accident involving DR Congo President Joseph Kabila's motorcade, his office said today. The accident happened on a road in the southwest of the country, 220 kilometres south of Kinshasa, as Kabila was returning to the capital on Tuesday. "Last night, a vehicle in the presidential motorcade was hit on the Matadi highway at Kimpese by a truck carrying cement," communications official Yvon Ramazani told AFP today. "Three soldiers in the Republican Guard were killed along with two civilians who were nearby," he said. Avalanche warning for districts in J&K, HP, Uttarakhand

The Chandigarh-based Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) issued avalanche warnings for the second consecutive day today for some districts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The SASE said the warnings will remain valid for 24 hours starting at 5:00pm today. An advisory by the agency said high-danger avalanche warning exists for avalanche-prone areas in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, while medium-danger avalanche warning exists for Kupwara and Bandipora districts in the state.
