A breach in the embankment of a canal in Odisha's Sambalpur district today caused damage to standing crops in several villages. The 40-feet breach has developed in the embankment of Sason canal in Khejurbandh under the Kilasama Gram Panchayat in the district, officials said adding crops were submerged particylarly in Balbaspur and Kilasama. According to the villagers, the embankment of the canal in the Hirakud dam circle gave way in the early hours today. "We have already informed the office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) about the loss caused due to the breach. The loss will be assessed after the water recedes," said Sambalpur Sadar Sub Collector, Pradeep Sahu. According to Superintending Engineer, Hirakud Dam Circle, Saroj Panda, the toe wall of the embankment had become old and it probably failed to retain the embankment leading to the breach. U'khand: Alerts issued following hailstorm forecast

The Disaster Management Center of Uttarakhand on Sunday issued an alert to all district magistrates following the forecast of snowfall and hailstorm by the weather department.As per the weather forecast, snowfall is expected in some areas of Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh and Chamoli, while Dehradun, Pauri, Haridwar and Nainital may face hailstorm, on Monday.The Disaster Management Center has requested the district magistrates to be ready with disaster management services.

Three booked for last month's fire in Kanjurmarg studio

Three persons from Cine Vista film studio have been booked for causing death by negligence in connection with the fire that broke out in the studio premises last month, a senior police official said today. Based on the report submitted by the fire brigade, an FIR was registered against two co-owners and a manager of the studio at Park site police station yesterday, he said. They have been booked under section 304A (causing death by negligence) and other relevant sections of the IPC, the official said, adding that no arrest had been made so far. A 20-year-old television production unit employee, Gopi Verma, had died in the fire that broke out at the studio in suburban Kanjurmarg at around 8pm on January 6. His body was found in the burnt debris a day after the fire.

Two people were killed and 30 others injured in two separate road accidents in Doda and Samba districts of Jammu and Kashmir today, a police official said. Two people were killed and two others injured when their car skidded off the road and fell into a 150-feet deep gorge near Bhaderwah in Doda district, he said. The car was on its way to Bhalara when it met with the accident, he said. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where their condition was stated to be critical. In separate incident, 28 people were injured when their bus turned turtle after colliding with a truck on Jammu-Punjab National Highway, the official said. The bus, coming from Punjab, turned turtle after it collided with a truck which it was trying to overtake at Jatwal village in Samba district, he said. At least three people were killed and 19 others were injured when a pick-up vehicle collided with a truck here today, an official said. The collision took place in Chakalvanshi area of the district, said Ravi Kumar NG, the District Magistrate of Unnao. "One of the deceased has been identified as Soni (40), while the other two deceased were women, whose identity could not ascertained," the district magistrate said. The injured were rushed to Unnao district hospital and 11 critically injured people were referred to a hospital in Kanpur for treatment, he said.
