Chinese military mourns servicemen's death in plane crash

The Chinese military today mourned the death of its air force service personnel who were killed in a recent crash of an aircraft during training. A ceremony was held at a military base in the southwest Guizhou province to mourn the death, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Though there is no official acknowledgement about the number of the personnel killed in the January 29 plane crash, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported that 12 personnel lost their lives. There was also no official mention of the make of the aircraft. The crashed aircraft was a new type of refuelling plane modified from the air force's Y-8 transport aircraft, the Post report on February 1 said. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) air force plane crashed in Guizhou during a training session on January 29. The staff aboard the plane died, the Xinhua report said. At least two killed in South Carolina train collision

At least two people were killed and 70 more were injured today when a train carrying 139 passengers collided with a freight train in the eastern US state of South Carolina, local police said. The Amtrak train traveling between New York and Miami collided with the CSX freight train and derailed in Cayce, near Columbia, the state's capital, at around 2:30 am today. Amtrak said in a statement that the lead engine derailed along with some passenger cars. Eight crew members were on board. The Lexington County Sheriff's Department confirmed all passengers had been evacuated from the train. Officials added that although 5,000 gallons of fuel spilled following the crash, there was no danger to the public. Meanwhile, the Red Cross said it was providing support to victims. SSB losing 10 times more jawans in 'freak' bike accidents than

Country's frontline-guarding force at Bhutan and Nepal borders -- the Sashastra Seema Bal-- has lost 10 times more troops in motorbike accidents in the last three years than at the borders or during operations, a recent report by the paramilitary force has said. The "disturbing trend", as noted in the internal report of the force accessed by the PTI, also found that those getting killed in such freak road accidents are "in the prime of their lives, about 30-40 years of age". "The report found that in the last three years, between 2015-17, 38 personnel of the SSB died in road accidents as compared to only four deaths in the line of duty or operations along the borders and in counter-militancy duties in Jammu and Kashmir. The data shows that the force is losing about one personnel per month in accidents on an average in the last three years time, the report said. The research-base report further said that out of the 38 deaths of personnel in road accidents, 28 were killed .

Last rites of army jawans killed in avalanche conducted

The last rites of three army jawans, who lost their lives in an avalanche in Jammu and Kashmir, were conducted today with full military honours. The mortal remains of Havaldar Kamlesh Singh, Sepoy Rajendra and Naik Balveer were taken to their respective places in Rajasthan, a defence spokesperson said. MP Bahadur Singh, MLA Anita Singh and others paid tribute to Naik Balveer in Bharatpur while other public representatives, district administration and police officers as well as the army personnel offered floral tributes to Sepoy Rajendra in Alwar and Havaldar Kamlesh Singh in Jhunjhunu. The three soldiers were killed when an avalanche struck their post in Machhil sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

Conserve lakes, curb illegal constructions to prevent urban

Disallowing unauthorised constructions in low-lying areas, conservation of lakes and putting in place a good drainage system are some of the major steps needed to prevent disasters due to urban flooding, said experts. Urban flooding is a global phenomenon and is caused by climate change, they said. "It (urban flooding) is a phenomenon which is caused due to climate change. Unless and until we take all the safeguards, it will not be possible to really check urban flooding," D S Meshram, President Emeritus, Institute of Town Planners, India (ITPI), told PTI. He was here to take part in the 66th National Town and Country Planners Congress held last week. "Unauthorised constructions and encroachments in low- lying areas should not be allowed," said Meshram, a former Chief Planner with the Union Ministry of Urban Development. Major fire in Cuttack shopping mall, no casualty

A major fire today broke out at a shopping mall here in which several shops were gutted. There was no information of any injury or casualty till 3 PM though 50 employees were in the mall when the fire broke out at 11.30 AM. The fire was first noticed at a garment showroom in the mall. Property worth more than Rs one crore was reduced to ashes as the fire spread to four other shops in the vicinity. About 150 personnel of fire service, police and ODRAF and 17 fire tenders have been pressed to douse the flames. The fire is yet to be controlled. Fire brigade personnel suspect that short circuit led to the fire but DG Fire Service B K Sharma said an inquiry will be conducted to ascertain the exact cause of fire. The shopping mall is located at Palamandap, near Badambadi bus terminal, the biggest bus depot of the city. The incident has disrupted vehicular traffic between Badambadi and Link Road.

2 killed in roadside blast in Afghanistan

LPG bowser explosion in Pak leaves 6 injured

An LPG bowser explosion on Sunday at a gas plant in Pakistan's Sheikhupura city left at least six people wounded.According to the rescue sources, the fire engulfed the plant and two adjacent Paper Mills shortly after bowser exploded, the local media reported.The incident occurred during refilling.The injured persons have been shifted to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital.According to the reports, the fire at the paper mills has been brought under control, while the efforts are being made to put out the blaze of the gas plant.

Prompt and timely rescue operation by the Indian Air Force (IAF) has helped save many lives in the Budhal bus accident that killed three persons and injured 20 others on Saturday.A minibus on way to Kotranka from Budhal fell in a ditch in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir after the driver lost control.The nearest Airforce Station at Jammu was alerted and an immediate sortie for casualty evacuation was planned.Wing Commander Vishal during the sortie planning process found that the helipad at Budhal was too small and unfit for the Russian Mi-17 1V helicopters he flies.He suggested that the casualties be brought to Rajouri by road as soon as possible and the air evacuation could be effected from Rajouri. Fire breaks out in godown, shops in Mulund, Bhiwandi

A fire broke out at an industrial estate in suburban Mulund late night today with officials of the BMC Disaster Control Room stating that fire-fighting operations were currently underway. A Control Room official said that the there were no report of injuries to anyone, adding that eight fire engines and an equal number of water tankers had been deployed to douse the fire. "The fire erupted at some industrial shops in Shanti Agency in Mulund West around 9.00 pm. The cause of the fire is not yet known," an official said. Meanwhile, in neighbouring Thane, firefighters continued their efforts to bring under control a raging fire at a godown in Bhiwandi's Mankoli Naka area. Five people dead in accident on old Pune-Mumbai highway

Five people, including four women, were killed and three others were injured after their sport utility vehicle collided with a tempo between Khandala and Lonavala on the old Pune Mumbai highway today. Lonavala police said that the accident took place at around 9 pm when an SUV, which was heading towards Khandala, collided with an approaching tempo. "Five people, including four women, died on the spot and three people were injured," said a police officer. The officer said that all five occupants of the SUV were employees of a hotel in Lonavala and were returning to their homes after the end of their hotel shifts. Seven men of UP minister's security staff injured in mishap

Seven CRPF personnel, deputed as security detail for UP minister Suresh Rana, were today injured, two of them severely, when their vehicle overturned on the Meerut-Karnal Highway in Shamli district, police said. The accident took place this evening near Jhal village when the personnel were on their way to Meerut, Circle Officer Ashok Kumar said, adding that the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where the condition of two of them was stated as "critical". The injured were headed to Hapur town, in western Uttar Pradesh, to escort Rana, Kumar said.

Death toll in Rajouri road accident rises to 4

A 26-year-old man, who was critically injured in a road accident in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, today succumbed at a hospital here, raising the death toll in the mishap to four, a police official said. Mohammad Shafeeq was among the 14 people who were injured after a mini-bus skidded off the road and overturned at Budhal in Nowshera area yesterday. He died this evening. Three persons had died in the mishap yesterday. The official said the driver of the vehicle, Balbir Singh, was arrested from Kagiote village. He had escaped from the scene following the accident. "An investigation is going on and the police has sought help from the motor vehicle department," the official said.

Mortal remains of soldiers killed in avalanche flown to Jaipur

The mortal remains of three soldiers, who lost their lives in an avalanche in Jammu and Kashmir, were brought here today by air. The aircraft with the mortal remains Kamlesh Singh, a resident of Jhunjhunu, Rajendra, hailing from Alwar and Balveer, a resident of Bharatpur, landed at Sanganer airport, a defence spokesperson said. the bodies were sent from the airport to their respective hometown by road, he said. Cremation will take place at their respective native places, the spokesperson added. 146 airlifted through Kargil courier in J-K

The AN-32 Kargil courier today airlifted 146 passengers from Kargil district in Ladakh region to the twin capitals of Srinagar and Jammu, Director Disaster Management Aamir Ali said. A total of 146 passengers availed the facility between Kargil to Jammu and Kargil to Srinagar, he said. While 50 passengers were airlifted from Srinagar to Kargil and 25 from Kargil to Srinagar, 48 passengers were airlifted to Jammu to Kargil and 23 on the return journey, he said. Kargil and Leh districts of Ladakh region are cut off from the rest of the state owing to the closure of 434-km Srinagar-Leh national highway due to snowfall in December last year. The road usually remains closed for five to six months annually. The director disaster management said over 400 persons have availed the Kargil courier facility since its introduction in mid January.

Army pays floral tributes to 3 jawans killed in avalanche

Army today paid floral tributes to three jawans who were killed when an avalanche struck their post in Machhil sector of Jammu and Kashmir. In a solemn ceremony at Badamibagh Cantonment, Lt Gen A K Bhatt, Corps Commander, Chinar Corps and all ranks paid homage to them, an army spokesman said. He said the three valiant soldiers braved all odds with exemplary commitment and dedication to duty and made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the motherland. "Late Hav Kamlesh Singh, Nk Balveer and Sep Rajendra were part of a patrol party which was serving in the formidable heights along the Line of Control and got swept away during an avalanche.
