5 killed in collision of French military helicopters

Two French military training helicopters collided and crashed Friday in a wooded area of Provence, killing five people aboard, police said. Officials said the crash occurred between the small towns of Cabasse and Carces, in the picturesque Var region, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Saint-Tropez. Police cordoned off roads throughout a broad zone around the crash site, and some three dozen police and military officials were dispatched to the scene, according to a local gendarme. The gendarme said three people aboard one helicopter were killed and two people on the other. Officials gave conflicting information about how many people were aboard altogether and whether anyone had survived the crash. Debris scattered across two large zones, but the area is uninhabited and no one on the ground was hurt, said the gendarme, who wasn't authorized to be publicly named. Six killed in two separate accidents in Bihar

Six persons - including five women and a child were killed and several others injured in two separate accidents in Bihar today, officials said. The incidents happened in Siwan and Begusarai districts, they said. In the first incident, four persons, including three women and a child, were killed after they fell down from a railway bridge, an official said. They were crossing the bridge over Daha river on foot to reach the Siwan Kutchery railway station, the District Magistrate (DM) of Siwan, Mahendra Kumar, told PTI. The deceased were residents of Kuchaykot police station in the neighbouring district of Gopalganj and they were approaching the railway station to catch a train back home, he said. Apparently, they panicked when they saw the Siwan-Gorakhpur passenger train approaching and jumped to save their lives, only to get killed, he said. Couple gets Rs 26 lakh as accident compensation

A former employee of Abu Dabhi Airport and his wife, who were injured in a road accident in 2012, have been awarded a collective compensation of around Rs 26 lakh by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here. The couple had demanded Rs 1 crore compensation each after suffering disability due to the accident in Navi Mumbai. In the order given two days back, member of the MACT, K D Vadane, directed the respondents- Popat Rokade, owner of a jeep involved in the accident, and New India Assurance Company, to jointly and severally pay the compensation to the couple. The claimants- Yasin Abdul Hamid Mukadam (43) and his wife Shamim Mukadam (40), resided at CBD Belapur in Navi Mumbai. Their counsel S Y Tawade told the MACT that the accident happened on the night of June 13, 2012, when the couple was going on the Vashi-Belapur Palm Beach road. CRPF man, wife, daughter die in road mishap,sons get Rs 1.25cr

Two young boys, who lost their parents and minor sister in a road accident involving a rashly driven truck, have been awarded Rs 1.25 crore compensation by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here. MACT Presiding Officer Raj Kumar Chauhan directed that the amount be paid to the parents and the minor sons of a CRPF constable who was riding a bike, with his wife and nine-year- old daughter sitting pillion, when a rashly driven truck hit them, killing them on the spot. The MACT directed the NationalInsuranceCompanyLtd, insurer of the offending truck, to pay the amount to the grandparents of the two boys, who were four-year-old and seven-year-old at the time of the accident in 2016, for the kids' education and other expenses. According to the petition, on December 13, 2016 Raj Kumar was coming to Delhi from Aligarh on a bike with his wife Seema and daughter Ritu (9) while his sons remained in Aligarh with their grandparents. Fire at Bellandur Lake again

Barely a fortnight after a blaze broke out at the city's polluted Bellandur Lake, the water body caught fire again. It broke out yesterday afternoon and was doused by night after a joint operation by the Fire Department and the Army, Fire Department officials said. "We got information around 4 pm. When we reached there fire at two or three spots. Couple of them were the same where it was noticed last time, and another was near the Sarjapur Road area. Three fire tenders along with 25 of our men were rushed to the spot," Chief Fire Officer Basavanna said. Delhi: Fire in shoe factory under control

Fire, which broke out in a shoe factory near Delhi's Peeragarhi in the wee hours of Friday, is under control now.The fire that happened around 2.30 a.m on Friday was doused more than six hours later.One fireman has also been injured in the ordeal.There were about 20 fire tenders at the spot, said the fire department.The fire has engulfed the basement area, first floor and second floor of the shoe factory.The reason of the fire is not reported, as of now.

Republican train crash: Railroad crossing safety arms face

The lead investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board said it's too early to say whether the safety arms at a rural Virginia crossing were working when a train carrying Republican members of Congress slammed into a trash truck, killing one truck passenger. Drivers who regularly cross over the tracks said they had seen the safety equipment appear to be malfunctioning a day before Wednesday's crash. Blaze in shoe factory in Peeragarhi, fireman injured

A fire broke out at a shoe factory in Peeragarhi and one fireman was injured during an operation to put out the blaze, the Delhi Fire Services said. A call was received around 2.50 am about the fire and 20 firetenders were rushed to the spot, said an official from the DFS. One fireman, Kuldeep, sustained minor injuries to his fingers during the operation. The fire was doused by 10.20 am, he added. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Hundreds of miners among 950 trapped in SAfrica resurface

Hundreds of gold miners among almost a thousand trapped underground for more than a day in South Africa following a power-cut resurfaced Friday, mining company Sibanye Gold said, as a rescue effort moved into full swing. 18 injured after minivan crashes into pedestrians in Shanghai

A minivan today crashed into pedestrians after veering onto a crowded sidewalk in China's financial hub Shanghai, injuring 18 people, three of them seriously, according to media reports. Police, however, believe the crash was not intentional and it was an accident and not an attack, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The 40-year-old driver was identified by police as a man surnamed Chen. According to an initial investigation, he is thought to have been illegally transporting gas bottles and was smoking at the time of the crash.
