Mild tremors jolt Rajasthan

Panicked residents jumped out of buildings today when mild tremors shook parts of Rajasthan, after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake jolted the Afghanistan- Tajikistan border region. A Met department official in Jaipur said the tremors, which lasted for a few seconds in the afternoon, were felt in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ajmer and Nagaur. Police said there were no reports damage to property or loss of life due to the tremors. The epicentre of the quake was near the Afghanistan- Tajikistan border at a depth of around 190 kilometres.

Lassa fever kills 21 in Nigeria: health officials

Twenty-one people have died from Lassa fever in Nigeria this month, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said today, in the latest outbreak in Africa's most populous nation. "Since the beginning of 2018, 80 cases have been classified as: 77 confirmed cases, three probable cases with 21 deaths," the NCDC said on Twitter. Cases have been reported in 13 of 36 states while 10 health care workers had been affected, it added. Lassa fever belongs to the same family as Marburg and Ebola, two deadly viruses that lead to infections with fever, vomiting and in worst-case scenarios, haemorrhagic bleeding. Its name comes from the town of Lassa in northern Nigeria where it was first identified in 1969. More than one hundred people were killed in 2016 in one of the nation's worst outbreaks of the disease, affecting 14 of the 36 states, including Lagos and the capital Abuja. Odisha builds 14.5 lakh houses since 2014-15 fiscal

Odisha government has been able to complete construction of a total of 14,50,294 houses in rural areas under various housing schemes since 2014-15 fiscal, officials said today. The houses built so far include 13,226 houses under Biju Pucca Ghar and Biju Pucca Ghar (mining areas), 2,392 houses under the Niraman Shramika Pucca Ghar, 9,73,273 under Indira Awas and 2,31,467 houses built under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural). In 2017-18 fiscal over 3,17,000 houses have been built so far. In an average of 1043 houses are constructed every day in the state, chief secretary A P Padhi said at a review meeting with district Collectors through video-conferencing yesterday. In urban areas, as many as 49,142 houses have been sanctioned by now and 29,167 houses are at the various stages of construction, officials said. Groundnut stock gutted in fire at warehouse in Rajkot

A fire broke out in a warehouse near Gondal town in the district, gutting a huge stock of groundnut kept there, an official said today. The blaze erupted last evening in the warehouse and nearly a dozen fire tenders were still engaged in hectic efforts to douse the flames, Rajkot rural superintendent of police Antrip Sood said. The district administration has ordered an inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of the fire, he said. A team from the forensic science laboratory in Rajkot has also reached the spot. The warehouse owner claimed that nearly two lakh sacks of groundnut, each containing 35 kgs of seeds, were kept in the store. He said they were able to shift out some sacks after the mishap.

Avalanche warning in Kashmir districts

A government agency today issued an avalanche warning in several districts of Jammu and Kashmir for next 24 hours, shortly after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake on the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region jolted parts of north India. The Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment has "informed that medium danger avalanche warning of level-3 exists in higher reaches of Baramulla district and low danger warning of level-2 in Kupwara, Bandipore, Shopian and Kargil Districts," an official spokesman here said. He said a level-1 warning has been issued in Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar, Udhampur, Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Ganderbal and Leh for the next 24 hours. "The people living in higher reaches of these districts should avoid movement in the avalanche-prone areas/slopes for the next 24 hours," he added. The advisory has been issued in view of the forecast of wet weather in most parts of the state over the next 24 hours.

2 labourers buried in landslide in Samba; rescued

Two labourers were trapped when a landslide took place during digging to lay cables along the Mansar road in the mountainous belt of Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district and were rescued later, police said today. The labourers, of a private company, were digging a 5- feet deep canal to lay cables, suddenly there was a landslide in the mountainous belt on the Samba-Mansar road at village Satah in the district yesterday, they said. The two labourers were trapped, they said, adding the Mountaineering Rescue Team of Police came to the spot and undertook rescue operation and brought them out. One was safely rescued, while the other received minor injuries and was hospitalised, the police said.

Murshidabad bus tragedy : Toll rises to 43

Rescue workers today fished out the body of passenger of the ill-fated government bus that fell into a canal in Murshidabad taking the toll in the tragedy to 43. Search is on for more bodies as relatives of about five missing persons have sought help apprehending that they may have boarded the bus and the exact number of passengers is yet to be known, a senior district official told PTI. Bodies of 42 passengers were fished out and eight injured others were rescued from the Gogra canal at Balirghat area of the district after the bus fell into it early on Monday morning. So far, 40 bodies have been identified and the eight injured are undergoing treatment at the Murshidabad Medical College, the official said. "Search operations will continued till we are convinced that no bodies are stuck in the river bed. Two killed in road accident in J-K's Samba

Two persons, including a woman, riding on a motorcycle were killed today after being hit by a truck on the Jammu-Pathankot national highway in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, a police official said. The driver of the truck, bearing a registration number of Punjab, abandoned the vehicle after the accident. Efforts were on to arrest him, the official said. He said the truck was on way to Punjab from Jammu when it hit a motorcycle near Vijapur in Samba district. The identities of the persons killed were yet to be determined, the official said, adding that the truck has been seized.

J-K Quake: Girder of under-construction flyover slips off

A girder of the under-construction Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover here slipped off pillars near Aloochibagh due to the earthquake that shook Kashmir today, officials said. No one was hurt in the incident. The girder slipped off the pillars and fell on a crane which was used to put it on two pillars during the intervening night, Minister for Works Naeem Akhtar told PTI. "The girder had just been installed on the pillars and had not been fixed yet.There is no structural damage to the flyover project due to the earthquake," Akhtar said. An official of the Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA), the executing agency of the flyover project, said no one was hurt in the incident. A 6.2 magnitude quake today shook Kashmir Valley.

6.1 magnitude quake rattles northern Afghanistan: USGS

A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan today, the USGS said, with tremors felt as far away as Islamabad and New Delhi. The quake hit at 0707 GMT (1237 IST) near Afghanistan's northern border with Tajikistan in the Hindu Kush mountains at a depth of 191 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.
