Tremors in north India
Tremors were felt in several parts of north India today following a 6.2 magnitude earthquake on the Afghanistan-Kazakhstan border, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The quake was felt in the Delhi-NCR region as well as the Kashmir Valley.

More than 80 people were aboard a ferry that sank in the remote Pacific, officials confirmed today, as a senior Kiribati lawmaker called for an independent inquiry into the vessel's disappearance. A multinational rescue operation is scouring vast swathes of ocean for survivors, but only seven people have been found alive so far and hopes are fading of locating any more. Initial estimates of how many people were on the MV Butiraoi when it went missing ranged from 35 to more than 100, but officials said the numbers were slowly becoming clearer. "Kiribati authorities have confirmed that about 80 passengers plus crew of likely about five were on the ferry," Rescue Coordination Centre NZ said in a statement. The centre said four aircraft from New Zealand, Australia and the United States had helped conduct sweeps in the area where the ferry went missing. 16 scrap godowns gutted in fire in Bhiwandi
As many as 16 scrap godowns were gutted in a fire in the industrial Bhiwandi township of the district this morning, an official said. No injury or casualty was reported in the blaze. The fire broke out in the Gayatri Nagar locality where a few huts also suffered damages in the mishap, he said. The fire fighters from Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar townships rushed to the spot and managed to control the blaze, Thane Municipal Corporation's regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said. The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, he added.

Three dead in California helicopter crash
Three people were killed when a tour and flight-training helicopter crashed into a house in coastal southern California today, witnesses and emergency personnel said. Witnesses described seeing a plume of smoke as the four- seat Robinson 44 craft plunged to the ground and appeared to clip the roof of one home before skidding along the ground at an intersection and smashing into another house. A nearby resident told the local ABC7 news channel it "sounded like a train coming through." Upon arriving at the scene she said she "saw one man out, I'm not sure if he fell out, and there was body parts." "I put my hand on the back of the helicopter and started praying over them. Because I knew at that point there weren't any survivors," she added. The woman said the residents of the home that was struck were there, but were in another part of the property and were unharmed. Four people sustained burn injuries on Tuesday after a fire broke out at a flour mill in Thane district's Dongri city.Reportedly, the mill, located in Dongri's Mohommadi Manzil, caught fire in the afternoon after which a fire tender was called to douse it.A probe has been initiated to determine the cause of the incident.
2 children, 2 adults killed in Cleveland house fire
Firefighters recovered the bodies of three people who died in a house fire today and continued to search for a fourth victim. Crews needed heavy equipment to take apart and stabilise the heavily damaged house before it was safe to go inside, said fire department spokesman Mike Norman. They also were careful to preserve potential evidence for the investigation into the cause of the fire, Norman said. The bodies of the three victims were found about 14 hours after the fire began early today. Crews will need to dismantle more of the home before they can recover the fourth body, the city's fire chief said. Investigators and family members said a 46-year-old man, his 3-year-old son, his 8-year-old granddaughter, and the man's 44-year-old nephew were in the house and unable to get out. UP: Five pilgrims die in road accident
Five pilgrims, including two women, died and seven others were injured in Shahjahanpur district on Tuesday when a truck collided with a tractor-trolley in which they were travelling.The injured have been admitted to the district hospital, where the condition of the two remains critical."All our surgeons are present here at the moment. According to the information we have received, five people have died. Seven people have been admitted to the hospital," said district hospital's Chief Medical Officer R.P. Rawat.Police said the accident occurred near Mirzapur in Zarinpur village, where the tractor-trolley full of pilgrims was going to Dhai Ghat Mela.According to one of the injured pilgrims, the "speeding" truck coming from the opposite side collided with their tractor-trolley, throwing them off the road.The district magistrate, Amrit Tripathi, said police had reached the spot in time and rescued the injured pilgrims.Police have registered a case against and begun a manhunt for the truck .
Alert gateman averts mishap
A major train accident has been averted today due to alertness of a gateman and quick reaction by drivers of a goods train in Odisha. However, one of the wagons of the goods train carrying dolomite jumped the rail between Balugaon and Chilka stations in Khurda Road-Brahmapur railway section of the East Coast Railway, a statement by the railway said. When the goods train was passing near Balugaon level crossing, on-duty gateman BK Sethi noticed a problem in a particular wagon and alerted the driver and co-loco-pilot. The train was immediately stopped, resulting in the derailment of all wheels of one wagon, blocking the up line. There is no injury or casualty to anybody due to the derailment, the release said. The alert gateman would be felicitated.
Four injured in fire in Mumbai
Four people received minor burn injuries in a fire in a flour mill here today, a civic official said. The fire was reported in the afternoon in a flour mill in Dongri area, said the official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's Disaster Management Cell. Fire Brigade personnel were rushed to the spot and they doused the blaze immediately, he said. Four people received minor burn injuries and they were rushed to the nearby state-run J J Hospital for treatment, the official said. "Our preliminary investigations suggested the fire was caused by a short-circuit. However, the same can be confirmed only after a proper investigation, " added official. Meanwhile, the doctors' hostel at J J Hospital plunged into darkness for an hour after its power supply got snapped due to a short-circuit, another official said. The short circuit was reported at 8.32 pm and electricity was restored within an hour, he said, adding there was no impact on medical services at the hospital.
UP: 5 killed in road accident, over 12 injured
Five people were killed and nearly a dozen injured today after their tractor-trolley was hit by a truck near Jarianpur here, police said. The accident took place around 9.00 pm when they were going to the Dhaaighat. They were going there to take a dip in the Ganga tomorrow on Poornima, Circle Officer, Jalalabad, Baldev Singh Khandela, said. They were all residents of Girgicha village The deceased were identified as Ram Bhajan (54) and his 50-year-old wife Chhabile, and Ramkali (45). Sonu (9), succumbed to injuries at the district hospital, he said. The identity of the rest is yet to be ascertained, police said. The injured were hospitalised, police said, and the driver of the truck is at large.
Drinking water for all, resource conservation govt's major
Jammu and Kashmir minister Sham Lal Choudhary tonight said the state government has set for itself three major goals of providing safe drinking water, harnessing and conserving water resources, and protecting life, land and property from floods. To provide drinking water for all, he said the government has set a target of completing 183 water supply schemes with a corpus of Rs 306.26 crore during 2017-18. The minister for public health engineering (PHE), irrigation and flood control (I&FC), said the water supply schemes will benefit around 2.29 lakh people in the state. Winding up a discussion on demand for grants of PHE, I&FC departments in the Legislative Assembly, he said the state government is making all efforts for creating dependable infrastructures to improve and augment these services. Regarding augmentation of water supply in urban areas, Choudhary said to meet shortfall and future demand of drinking water supply in Srinagar City, two schemes were taken .

Toll rises to 42 in Murshidabad bus accident
The toll in the bus tragedy in Murshidabad district rose to 42 today with six more bodies fished out from the canal into which the vehicle fell on Monday. A senior government official said some of the bodies were found stuck in the waterbed, while others were floating. The passenger bus had rammed the railing of a bridge and plunged into Gogra canal at Balirghat area of the district around 6 am yesterday. The search operation was called off last night due to poor visibility and resumed at 7 am this morning, Murshidabad District Magistrate P Ulaganathan told PTI. "The search will continue till the time we are convinced that there are no bodies stuck anywhere underneath the water," he said. Rajdhani Express hits tractor trolley in Bihar, 1 killed
One person was killed when the tractor trolley he was driving got hit by Assam-bound Rajdhani Express at an unmanned railway crossing in the district today, an official said. The tractor had crossed the railway track near Vidyapatidham station but the attached trolley was stuck in the track, RPF Assistant Commandant Kumar Surendra Sharma said. The tractor was hurled several metres away by the impact of the collision, grievously injuring its 55-year-old driver Lakhan Rai who succumbed to injuries at a hospital later, Sharma said. The trolley had got entwined with the train's engine and the Rajdhani Express could resume its journey only after the mangled heap of metal was removed, the RPF official said. Rail traffic was affected on the line for a few hours as local people squatted on the tracks demanding that gates be installed at the unmanned crossing, he said.

2 labourers killed as truck falls into ditch
Two women were killed and 13 others injured when a truck carrying labourers fell into a road side ditch in Garwah district today, police said. The accident occurred near Chapri village under Ramkanda police station area when the labourers were returning home in Garwah after harvesting in Aurangabad of Bihar. Two women were killed on the spot while 13 others suffered injuries, police said adding that all the injured were taken to Medininagar Sadar Hospital in Palamau district. Barring six of them who were injured seriously, all the injured were released after first-aid.
Murshidabad bus accident: Mamata orders inspection of bridge
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today ordered the inspection of a bridge from which a public transport bus plummeted into the Gogra canal in Murshidabad district, killing at least 41 passengers. Banerjee also directed the district authorities to put up speed restrictions on the road. The bus had rammed into the bridge early yesterday and fallen deep into the canal. The bodies of 41 passengers had been found so far from the canal. Eight people are believed to have been injured in the accident. The chief minister, who had visited the spot soon after the incident and stayed in the town overnight, said the condition of the bridge had to be examined. "An inspection of the condition of the bridge must be conducted. And speed-breakers must be installed in and around the area ... That is really needed," she told reporters here.
