5 killed, 22 injured in accident in UP

Five people were killed and 22 injured in a head-on collision between a tractor and a pickup truck near Tentigaon village here, police said today. According to SDM Varun Kumar, the accident occurred when the people were travelling in the tractor to Hathras after attending a ceremony in Managadhi village. Its driver lost control of the speeding vehicle and rammed into the pickup truck coming from the opposite direction, the SDM said. Five, including four women, were killed and 22 were injured in the accident, SP (Rural) Aditya Kumar Shukla said. "Four persons have been hospitalised while rest were allowed to go home after first aid," he said, adding that the condition of two was serious. Those injured include the pickup truck's driver. The driver of the tractor managed to flee after the accident, the SP said.

10 people died of dengue in Delhi last year: MCD report

At least 10 people died in Delhi due to dengue last year, a municipal report released today said, updating an earlier death toll of four. The report also said that the vector-borne disease affected 9,271 people here in 2017. The report by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, which tabulates the data for the entire city, said three fatalities were reported in areas falling under the SDMC, and two from areas under the North Delhi Municipal Corporation. Five of the victims were not Delhi residents, but died in the national capital. The official toll maintained by the Delhi municipal authorities till December 26 stood at four, even though some hospitals had reported a few more deaths due to dengue. The mosquito-borne tropical disease had claimed its first victim in the city this year on August 1, when a 12-year-old boy died of dengue shock syndromes at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH). Kailash Bar fire: Case registered, 2 held

A case has been registered against four people under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after a fire accident at Bengaluru's Kailash Bar Restaurant claimed five lives last night.Two out of the four accused have been arrested.Earlier in the day, Bengaluru Development Minister KJ George announced Rs 5 lakh compensation each for the kin of the workers, who died in the fire.Five employees were killed in the fire while they were sleeping inside the eatery in the Kumbaara Sangha building, in the wee hours of Sunday.RV Dayashankar, the owner of Kailash Bar Restaurant has been absconding after a call from the police.The reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained and the matter is being investigated.

Goa pollution board revokes firm's coal handling permission

The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) today revoked the permission granted to JSWs South West Port Limited to handle coal at Mormugao Port Trust. The decision to revoke permission, owing to violations of the conditions stipulated while granting "consent to operate", was taken at the GSPCB here today. The order added that the company had been given 15 days time to move out its existing coal cargo at MPT. GSPCB Chairman Ganesh Shetgaonkar said today that the company had handled more coal than the capacity permitted in the consent offered to it on July 21, 2017. He said that the company handled 10.112 million tonnes of coal and coke during the year 2016-17 against 4.125 million tonnes of coal that was permitted for the year. "The Board in the light of the above decides that the consent order dated July 21, 2017 issued to SWPL under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and under Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981 stands cancelled/ .

BMC chief asks hoteliers to strictly follow fire safety norms

The municipal chief today asked restaurant and hotel owners to strictly follow rules related to fire safety at their establishments. Representatives of the Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association (AHAR) had met Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ajoy Mehta today against the backdrop of the Kamala Mills fire that killed 14 people in the early hours of December 29. A senior BMC official told PTI that the stern advice was well received and the AHAR representatives assured the civic chief of full cooperation in making restaurants and hotels in the city safe for its patrons. The Kamala Mills fire incident has been followed by the BMC cracking the whip on illegal alterations and additions made by several eateries to their premises. The official added that the AHAR delegation also requested for the development of a mechanism to weed out irregularities being carried out by a few people in the industry. Goa: Two held with foreign notes worth Rs 43.7 lakh

The Goa Customs' Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) on Monday seized foreign currency worth Rs 43,70,000 from two passengers at the airport.One of the passengers was a foreigner, who was intending to travel by Oman Air, and the other was an Indian.When the customs officers interrogated the passengers, they admitted to smuggling the said amount to Dubai.The currency was seized under the provisions of the Customs Acts and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the passengers were detained.

Heavy snowfall wreaks havoc in China; 21 killed

Heavy snowfall in China continued to wreak havoc today, damaging houses, agriculture and power facilities, with authorities saying 21 people have been killed and millions hit in the last one week. The provinces that have been badly hit by the weather are Anhui, Henan, Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan, Shaanxi, Shanxi and Chongqing Municipality, the China National Commission for Disaster Reduction said. More than 3,700 people have been relocated and 14,000 are in need of emergency assistance, said the commission, noting that over 700 houses had collapsed and nearly 2,800 were damaged, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The weather has affected more than 233,100 hectares of farmland, with more than 8,100 hectares destroyed, causing direct economic losses of 5.55 billion yuan (USD 854 million), it said. R-day airspace closure reduced by 2 days

The restrictions on use of airspace in the run-up to Republic Day have been reduced to seven days from nine, bringing some relief for passengers planning to travel from or into Delhi. Nearly 1,000 flights were expected to be cancelled or rescheduled by the airspace closure imposed for commercial airlines for 100 minutes everyday for nine days from January 18 to 26. But now there will be no restrictions on January 19 and January 25 which will bring the number of flights affected to approximately 780, according to an airport official. The number of days for which the restriction was placed was brought down to seven after hectic consultations among the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Ministry of Home Affairs and the Indian Air Force, a source said. "Of the total nine days, three were standby days and the Indian Air Force has decided to withdraw two of them. DAY-NULM scheme: 60 pc of sanctioned shelters for homeless

Nearly 60 per cent of the sanctioned 1,330 shelters for the homeless, under the Centre's DAY-NULM scheme, in 25 states are currently operational amid rising demand for those during winter nights. States or urban local bodies are required to build the shelters after their proposal is approved under the 'Scheme of Shelters for Urban Homeless' component of Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM). According to the data given by Union Housing and Urban Affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri in a reply in the Rajya Sabha recently, Delhi is among the top performing states with 201 shelters being functional out of the sanctioned strength of 216 under the scheme. Madhya Pradesh also fared well with 129 shelters operational out of approved 133 for the state. Tamil Nadu had 102 functional shelters under the scheme out of approved 141. Fire in Bengaluru resto-bar kills five employees

A major fire swept through a resto-bar located in a 70-year-old building in a busy area in the city, killing five employees in their sleep early today, police said. The blaze broke out in Kailash Bar and Restaurant on the ground floor of the Kumbara Sangha (potters association) building at Kalasipalya around 2.30 am, when smoke was noticed and fire brigade alerted by some persons nearby, police said. "Fire services were pressed into action.. Two fire tenders and one fire rescue vehicle attended to it and it has been doused...The cause of the fire is not known and is being investigated," a senior police officer said. 4 killed, 12 injured in accident due to fog

Four people were killed and 12 others injured when their car dashed into a roadside tree on the NH-28 due to dense fog early morning today, the police said. The accident took place near Dadri village under Safdarganj police station area, they said, adding three people died on the spot. The injured were taken to the district hospital from where the seriously injured were being rushed to Lucknow's Trauma Centre, where one more succumbed to injuries, SP Anil Kumar said. The identity of the victims was not known yet, he said.

Haryana govt sets up state road safety council

The Haryana government has set up a state road safety council under the chairmanship of transport minister and district road safety committees led by the deputy commissioners concerned to initiate steps in raising road safety awareness. A notification to this effect was issued today, a spokesperson of the transport department said. He said the council would include administrative secretaries of home, school education, public works (buildings and roads), transport and health departments as members. The Director General of Police, chief engineer of public works (buildings and roads), chief administrators of Haryana urban development authority and Haryana state agricultural marketing board and three non-government experts or agencies related to road safety, nominated by the government would be the other members of the council. Five youths killed in car-lorry collision near Chitradurga

Five youths on a picnic trip were killed and four others injured seriously today in a head-on collision between a car and a lorry in Chitradurga district, about 200 km from here, police said. Police said the youths from Munnalu and surrounding villages in Belagavi district were returning in a car from a tour of Mysuru and Madikeri when the mishap occurred, killing five of them. The injured had been hospitalised, they said. The impact of the collision was so strong that the car was completely mangled.

Minor fire in car at airport; none injured

A minor fire was reported from a passenger car at the airport here, but was put out immediately and no one was injured in the incident, officials said. Following the incident near the Domestic terminal, vehicular traffic came to a halt for about 20 minutes, airport officials added. Earlier,three passengers of the car,including the driver immediately got off the vehicle after smoke emanated from the engine. Eight bogies of goods train derail in UP

Eight bogies of a goods train derailed near Alapur township here this morning disrupting train movement on Lucknow-Gonda rail route. No one was injured in the incident, railway sources said. Eight bogies of the goods train, on its way to Gonda from Lucknow, derailed near Alapur town around 10.30 am, they said. Prima facie, the incident took place because of some minor cracks on the rail tracks due to severe cold, sources said, adding rail traffic on the route would be restored soon.
