The death of five employees in a bar-cum-restaurant blaze here on Monday stirred the civic body and police to crack down on all bars, pubs and eateries to ensure fire safety norms are followed, a top police official said.
The West Bengal government will install speed-limiting devices in all commercial vehicles registered in the state to check accidents and to ensure that they maintain stipulated speed limits while moving through the national and state highways. A senior official of the state transport department told PTI that the state transport department has also decided to install the speed-limit devices in all vehicles registered for use by the state government. The decision is a part of the West Bengal government's 'Safe Drive, Save Life' campaign, he said adding the move would also increase safety on the roads and highways passing through West Bengal. "The transport department has decided that speed-limiting devices will be installed in all commercial vehicles registered in West Bengal. This device will ensure that stipulated speed limits are not violated on major thoroughfares here, including the national highways, state highways and on the local roads in urban areas," he said. It
A fire broke out on the third floor of the sessions court building here this morning, an official said, adding that no casualty or injury was reported, though some official records were gutted in the blaze. This is the fifth fire incident in the city in the last three weeks. The fire brigade got a call at 7.14 am about the blaze in the court building, located near the campus of the Mumbai University in the southern parts of the city, the official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) disaster management unit said. The fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and managed to douse the flames in the building, which has been accorded a heritage status. Though the building did not suffer any major damage, some official records and electrical wirings were gutted, the official said. An Iranian oil tanker on fire for two days after colliding with a Chinese cargo ship off the coast of China is at risk of exploding or sinking, authorities said today as rescuers recovered one body amid no sign of survival for 32 foreign crew members. Five persons were killed and 30 others injured when the mini cargo van in which they were travelling overturned in Telangana's Jogulamba Gadwal district today, police said. A police official said they suspect that negligence on part of the van's driver led to the mishap near Gadwal town, located about 175 kms from here. "More than 30 labourers working in a ginning mill were travelling in the vehicle when the accident took place. Five of them died on the spot and 30 people were injured," the official said. The injured, including the van's driver who sustained multiple fractures, were admitted to different hospitals, he said. A case was registered in connection with the mishap, he added.
An American military helicopter made an emergency landing in Okinawa today, just two days after a similar incident on the southern Japanese island. It was the latest in a series of accidents involving US military equipment that have fuelled local opposition to the basing of American forces on the island. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage after the helicopter landed near a hotel in the village of Yomitan, an Okinawa police spokesman said. "We do not know about the cause as the incident is still under investigation," the spokesman told AFP. The US military could not immediately be reached for comment. Due to dense fog in Uttar Pradesh, a car fell off a bridge today early morning, killing two members of a family, the police said. Three other members of the family were also injured in the accident that occurred near Mursaan town here, they said.
