Explosion risk for oil tanker ablaze off China: authorities

An Iranian oil tanker ablaze off the Chinese coast is at risk of exploding or sinking, authorities said today, as they reported there was no sign of survivors 36 hours after the vessel erupted in flames. A huge fire was still raging around the stricken ship, which had been carrying 136,000 tonnes of light oil, with fierce heat and thick black smoke billowing from the vessel and the surrounding sea. Rescuers attempting to reach the crew of 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis were being beaten back by toxic clouds, China's transportation ministry said. The Panamanian-flagged 274-metre (899-foot) tanker Sanchi is "in danger of exploding or sinking," the ministry said. The accident happened on Saturday evening 160 nautical miles east of Shanghai. The tanker, operated by Iran's Glory Shipping, was heading to South Korea when it collided with a Hong Kong- flagged cargo ship, the CF Crystal, carrying 64,000 tonnes of grain. Fire in sessions court building in Mumbai

A fire broke out on the third floor of the sessions court building here this morning, an official said. No casualty or injury has been reported so far, he said. The fire brigade got a call at 7.14 am about the blaze in the court building, located near the campus of the Mumbai University in South Mumbai, the official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's disaster management unit said. The fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot, he said. "Efforts are on to douse the flames," he said. The cause of fire was not yet known, he said, adding that an investigation will be carried out into the incident. Further details were awaited. Kailash bar fire: Five employees killed in Bengaluru

Five employees were killed after a major fire broke out at Kailash bar restaurant in Kumbaara Sangha building in Bengaluru.The fire took place at around 2.30 a.m. when all the five employees were sleeping inside the bar.On that note, Kailash bar and restaurant was located in the ground floor of the building in a vegetable market area.Two fire tenders immediately reached the spot to douse the flames.The reason behind fire is yet to be known and the matter is being investigated.The bar is licensed to R.V Dayashankar.

Firozabad mishap: Ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for kin of deceased

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of 10 people killed in the road accident in Firozabad.The mishap took place on Sunday after a speeding truck turned turtle on a hatchback and an auto-rickshaw on the National Highway 2.The deceased include two teenagers and two women.Eyewitnesses said, "The truck, after taking a right turn, on a national highway lost its balance and crushed people who were sitting in a three-wheeler and a car."They added that some people, who were standing at the edge of the road, were also injured in the incident.The accident took place at around 4:10 pm at Sauthra roundabout of Sirsaganj police jurisdiction in Firozabad district.

Flooding at JFK airport forces evacuation

The Terminal 4 of New York's John F Kennedy International Airport have been shut down after flooding due to a water main break at the baggage claim area.The flooding led to the suspension of international flight arrivals at the airport on Sunday and the passengers at Terminal 4 have been diverted to other terminals, said the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.The water leaked from the ceiling onto a check-in counter covering large areas of the floor, local media reported.Local media quoted a spokesperson of the Port Authority as saying that "about 3 inches of water was inside the west end of Terminal 4".The suspension of flights further added to the misery of people stranded at the airport, after a powerful winter storm last week led to the cancellation and delay of hundreds of flights.Massive delays, walls of people in terminals, complaints of hours-long waits to get to a gate after landing, then hours more to get checked baggage were some of the cries of the stranded ...

B'desh: 35 cops hurt in road crash

At least, 35 policemen were injured after a bus carrying them hit a tree on the roadside in the city's Central Bus Terminal area on Sunday.A police source said: "A bus carrying 40 policemen plunged into the ditch, as the driver lost control over the steering wheel and hit a roadside tree at around 7:30 pm while giving side to a truck", the Dhaka Tribune reported.The firefighters of the Kushtia fire service rushed to the spot immediately and rescued the injured policemen."Among the injured, the condition of five policemen was critical", said Taposh Kumar Sarker, a resident medical officer of Kushtia General Hospital.Some sources added that the policemen were returning to their homes after providing security protocol to Bangladeshi President Abdul Hamid, during his visit to Shilaidaha Kuthibari earlier, which was once the mansion of Dwarkanath Tagore.

Powerlifting world champion succumbs to road accident injury

Powerlifting world champion Saksham Yadav on Sunday succumbed to the injuries he sustained in a road accident earlier in the day.Yadav (23) was initially taken to Raja Harish Chandra Hospital in Narela, from where he was shifted to Max Hospital, and later to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he breathed his last.Earlier in the day, four other powerlifting players, identified as Tikamchand, Saurabh, Yogesh and Harish Roy, were brought dead at Raja Harish Chandra Hospital in Narela after the accident, while Yadav and one other Rohit were critically injured.All six had met with an accident due to fog conditions at Sindhu border in Delhi at around 3:00 a.m.Rohit, the lone survivor of the accident, is admitted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital.According to a preliminary investigation into the accident, the speed of the car was very high. Some bottles were also found in the car indicating the possibility of drunk driving.The investigation is underway.

Volcano erupts for first time in Papua New Guinea

A dormant volcano erupted for the very first time in a dramatic fashion, spewing lava and sending an ash cloud at around two kilometres above the sea level.The local media reported that the volcano, located on the Kadovar Island, situated in north-eastern Papua New Guinea, lay dormant until yesterday when it began to erupt at around noon. The volcano is still spewing lava, stripping large parts of land in the island.Experts are calling the eruption the "first surprise volcano to erupt in 2018".Thick dust, clouds and smoke have surrounded the island. Experts are also discovering why the once-dormant volcano erupted all of a sudden. The island is approximately located 24 kilometres from the northern coast of mainland Papua New Guinea.At least 600 residents of the volcanic island were evacuated after the local authorities received distress calls from them.The Rabaul Volcanological Observatory said that the eruption could become 'explosive'."Due to the steepness of the island, landslides .

Speeding bus kills elderly couple, angry onlookers torch bus

An elderly couple was today killed after a bus hit the motorcycle they were traveling on in Sanavad area here. Police said that people, agitated and angry at the incident, then torched the bus after getting its passengers to alight. The incident happened near Dhodava village, about 70 kilometres from here. Superintendent of Police Kalyan Chakravarthi said that the bus was travelling at high speed and hit the bike on which Gulzar Khan (70) and Shakrun Bi (65) were traveling, killing them instantly. He added that a child accompanying the couple was injured and is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital. The official said a case had been registered and a hunt was on for the driver who fled the scene of accident.

Gehlot demands relief for 3 'drought-hit' districts in Raj

Senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot today demanded that the Rajasthan government announces relief for farmers in Karauli, Sawaimadhopur and Dholpur districts of the state. He said these districts are drought affected and farmers need urgent assistances. "Drought has affected 60-70 per cent farms lands and adequate irrigation is not available there. DPS bus mishap fallout: MP govt to withdraw 2514 old school

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today announced that 2,514 school buses that are over 15 years old would be phased out, two days after four Delhi Public School students were killed in a collision between their school bus and a truck here. Chouhan consoled family members of the deceased and visited the hospital where the injured students are undergoing treatment. "We won't allow buses more than 15 years old to ply at any cost. A directive will be issued to take these buses off roads within three months," the chief minister told reporters. He said that 2,514 out of the total 17,400 school buses, plying with the permission of the Transport Department, have been in operation for more than 15 years. "These old buses will be taken off roads in a phased manner," he said. Chouhan also announced removal of Indore Regional Transport Officer (RTO) M P Singh after taking cognisance of a photograph published by some newspapers in which the officer was purportedly .

3 suffocate to death in Bengaluru manhole

Three sanitation workers died of suffocation when they entered a manhole to clean it in Bengaluru on Sunday.As per the preliminary reports, an apartment association had hired a private contractor to clean the manhole after a blockage was reported.The contractor had sent a team of worker's to clean the manhole and during the cleaning process, one worker entered the 10ft deep manhole and slipped.To rescue him, two more workers entered the manhole, but all three collapsed inside the manhole due to suffocation.Police and fire service officials reached immediately at the spot and took the persons out of the manhole but all the three were declared dead.Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Mayor Sampath Raj also met the families of the deceased.He expressed disappointment over the incident and said that despite so many equipment being available for the sewage treatment, people are still using labourers.

DMK urges Centre to declare Kanyakumari as disaster hit dist

DMK today urged the Centre to declare Kanniyakumari as a national disaster hit district and requested it to sanction funds for taking up rehabilitation and relief works in the cyclone Ockhi affected areas there. "Even after 40 days of cyclone Ockhi crossing the Kanniyakumari coast, the state government's demand for a relief package of Rs 13,520 crore was yet to be sanctioned by the Centre", a meeting of DMK district secretaries said a resolution. The meeting also urged the Centre to release funds for taking up relief and rehabilitation works in Kanyakumari besides providing compensation to the families of fishermen who were affected by Ockhi without further delay. 10 killed after truck hits three-wheeler, car in Uttar Pradesh

In a freak accident, at least 10 persons were today killed and one was critically injured after a speeding truck hit a three-wheeler and took a tumble crushing a car and some passers-by here, police said. The accident took place around 4 pm when the truck, travelling from Agra to Kanpur, lost its balance after taking a sharp right turn on the busy national highway and hit and fell on a three-wheeler, a car and some passers-by, Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar told PTI. The SP said that the toll might rise further. He added that the critically injured person was admitted to a hospital and might be referred to Agra.
